It was really an exceptional year for wine, 1997. And it could not be otherwise, for the Primitivo di Manduria doc. Perhaps, it was the scent released by the vines that were preparing to produce those few beautiful bunches and the aware foreboding of the quality of the wine that would come out, to lead a small group of friends to become enthusiastic, in that summer, about the idea of setting up a Consortium of companies that would promote, protect and enhance a product until that day almost considered the "son of a lesser god".



The instrument was the law no.164 of 1992, and on that device they arrived to the notary constitution, on 16th February 1988, where the first statute was recorded by the signing of ten companies, both social and private, certainly among the most representative and illuminated in the area. After that first, essential starting point, every effort was aimed at increasing the number of adherents to get that 40% of the representativeness of the product in protection, the minimum required by law for ministerial recognition, which was finally achieved with the Ministerial Decree of 5th April 2002.



Today, finally, we are able to operate institutionally in the service of producing companies deserving the success achieved thanks to a certain quality to a universally recognized typicality.



The representativeness is increased and, with it, the awareness of producers who, despite the specificity of each individual company, should take a common path guaranteeing a constant minimum quality to make success not fleeting meteor, but beautiful and well–established reality. This task is almost a mission, for the current board of directors who, through shared initiatives and programs, tends to the protection, enhancement and promotion of the Primitivo di Manduria: an ancient wine for an emerging DOC.

Consorzio di Tutela Vino Aglianico Del Vulture Doc

Aglianico del Vulture is a red wine made from Aglianico grapes grown in the area of Vulture, which is located in the northwest Basilicata in the province of Potenza. In the year 1971 it has been awarded the designation of controller origin (DOC) and in 2010 the designation of controlled and guaranteed origin (DOCG) as "Aglianico del Vulture Superiore". Aglianico is one of the best Italian wines and represents, as similar in production and taste, the Barolo of the South.


In addition to Aglianico del Vulture DOC there are also other wines without the DOC mark, such as the sweet Aglianico, a dessert wine with a good body, and Aglianico di Filiano, that is grown in Filiano, a small village south of the Vulture.


The Aglianico del Vulture wine has a ruby garnet red color; a fragrant and vinous scent, with hints of strawberry and raspberry; a dry, fruity and harmonious flavor. 11.5 to 13% alcohol. Aglianico is considered old after at least 3 years of reserve and after at least 5 years of aging in oak barrels. Excellent with meats and roasts.


The Aglianico grape variety was brought to Italy by the name of Hellenica, by the Greeks. The Romans called it Ellenico and used it to improve the quality of Falerno, a wine much loved by the poets of those days. In the fifteenth century, under the rule of the Aragonese, it was called Aglianico.

In January 2003, together with producers and winemakers, the Consortium for the protection and enhancement of the DOC Cir was founded.

After a few years, in 2007, the protection and enhancement was extended also to the DOC Melissa, a territory adjacent to the DOC Cir. An institution of protection, traceability and concrete support to local wine production, the Consortium works with the intent to protect and enhance a wine, whose identity is tied to the history, the culture of an area, which has always been defined a land of wines. One of the main aims will be to follow the guidelines and directives, to ensure greater safety to the consumer on the methods of production of grapes and wines. The Consortium plays, in effect, Erga Omnes control activities, to members and non–members. The awards achieved in many national and international markets and the appreciation that industry operators and experts recognize to the Cir and Melissa wines, serve as an incentive to work well with the sole purpose of offering consumers a unique and inimitable wine. The strength and beauty of the production, also visible in the many labels, is all in this fascinating link between men, the land and its history.

The Voluntary Consortium for the Protection and Promotion of the DOC wines Island of Pantelleria was established by the notarial deed dated 19th March 1997. It was recognized by the Decree of 5th April 2002 (published in the "Gazzetta Ufficiale" of the Italian Republic No. 100 of 30th April 2002) as the sole managing entity of this designation of origin. Its aims are to be identified in the need to ensure a legitimate defense of the good image of the designation of origin and of the income of the agricultural producers of Pantelleria, stimulating the recovery of abandoned vineyards and the enhancement of the production of the typical organoleptic treasures contained in clusters that shine on this volcanic soil.


In line with its evolutionary purposes, the Consortium has also made perform a scientific study aimed at the enhancement of the aromatic heritage of the Zibibbo grapes in various districts of the island, characterizing specificities and climatic diversities, pointing also to treasure the extraordinary versatility of this grape variety and its compatibility with other cultivars.


Moreover, it is merit of the Consortium a thorough verification – carried out by an equipe of agronomists – of the factual situation of the vineyards enrolled in the register of Pantelleria DOC, through an investigation of the actual current structure, of the management and of the existing plantations.

It is also to be attributed to the Consortium the impetus for the conclusion of the inter–trade agreements that are renewed every year before the harvest and have seen the minimum remuneration of the grapes that are harvested in Pantelleria rise significantly (up to three times compared to the past): right the unanimous willingness of the Companies of the Consortium saw recognized a particular rewarding treatment to the farmers who pursue quality.



Among other initiatives implemented by the Consortium, it should be emphasized its role as a prime mover of the proposal of regulatory amendment of the DOC, to ensure more clarity and compliance with all applicable customs, many of which correspond normatively to as much quality guarantees: what gave rise to the Decree of 27th September 2000 approving the New Production Regulations. This latter sees finally the updating of its rules at the changing of market conditions and new preferences of consumers in the world.




The regulations enacted in this way – and working since the 2000 vintage – leave proudly unchanged the values of tradition: which, indeed, are now enhanced. The new framework contains three DOC: Passito di Pantelleria, Moscato di Pantelleria (both made from grapes dried in the sun and whose finished product, not with addition of alcohol, can only be bottled on the island), as well as the other DOC Pantelleria which includes six types (the two liqueur wines, a gold wine, a sparkling wine, sweet Zibibbo and a white wine) whose bottling is permitted within the territory of Sicily. For each type, the maximum production per hectare is clearly and strictly regulated, as well as the percentage of maximum yield of fresh grapes into wine and liters of wine per hectare. Furthermore, regulations about labeling, presentation and packaging of the products are more suitably articulated.
