The best wineries in Umbria.
It is one of the oldest companies in the area of Montefalco. The name Scacciadiavoli comes from the name of an ancient village, which lies in close proximity of the company, where an exorcist (Scacciadiavoli) lived.
The winery was built in the second half of the nineteenth century and has been restored recently, rational and equipped with modern facilities. In the middle of the twentieth century, the grandfather of the current owners, Amilcare Zuccari, acquired the property.
The size of the company is of 130 hectares of surface, 35 out of which are invested in vine–growing, and the current production is of about 200,000 bottles, that will rise to about 250,000 when all the vineyards are in production.
The wines are typical of the area: Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, dry and raisin versions, Montefalco Rosso DOC and Grechetto dell&rsquo,Umbria I.G.T. .
The conversion and development of the wine–growing area, now complete, includes the construction of the vineyards with at least 5,000 plants per hectare, targeted at achieving the best quality standards in the production of Montefalco Sagrantino, Montefalco Rosso and Grechetto dell’Umbria.
For some time, Spumante Brut Metodo Classico from Sagrantino grapes has been produced, too.
The Pambuffetti brothers are confident that the potential of the soil and the microclimate of the Scacciadiavoli company is enable to reach, thanks to the collaboration of experienced agronomists and winemakers, the pursuited results.
Thruster of that belief is the motto “Sola Fides” (great confidence) imprinted on the emblem that is on the front of the winery and on labels.
The seat of the company, founded in 1964, is located in Bevagna, in Capro locality, where the founder Domenico Benincasa is committed in the pioneering work of the modern cultivation of the Sagrantino grape variety. Since 2009, also the "Tenuta Vincastro" in the Municipality of Passignano sul Trasimeno has been part of the Benincasa company, which stretches for 50 hectares along the hills of the village of Castel Rigone down towards Lake Trasimeno.
Umbria, Italy’s Green Heart, is a crossroads between North and South, between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas, a land where wine has been grown since Etruscan times. Inspired by the potential of the territory, the Bigi winery has achieved truly enviable results, especially with Orvieto Classico, of which it has been the most important and prestigious name for years.
Thanks to the capable hands of its winemakers and the wide availability of vineyards, 196 hectares planted with vines, over time it has diversified its product range with other white wines of the area, such as East! East! East! and Grechetto, and red wines of great interest, products made from Sangiovese grapes of Umbria, in single–variety or combined with other grape varieties (Vipra Rossa).
The company has chosen to rediscover the native vineyards of Umbria: Trebbiano Spoletino, a vine variety cultivated in the ancient Spoleto Duchy and Montefalco Sagrantino, and wanted to plant vineyards deploying them exactly in the areas where these vine varieties have centuries–old traditions. The vineyards for the production of red wines are located, therefore, in Montefalco (30 hectares), but vineyards destined to the production of white wines are located in Spoleto (26 hectares).
Cantina Novelli focuses on the territory as a whole, bringing forward project of research like the one of recovery of the ancient vine: Trebbiano Spoletino.
Azienda Agricola Barberani is located a few kilometers from Orvieto, on the hills overlooking Lake Corbara along the Tiber River, in an area called classic of Orvieto wine production, of all the oldest and best reputed. In these hills Etruscan and Roman finds testify that already in ancient times wine and oil were produced here, which then reached Rome from the nearby river port of Palianum. The company now extends on a surface of 75 hectares, of which 50 are of specialized vineyards, and is located in the fortified village of Villa Monticelli, an ancient settlement built in the medieval period.
Azienda Val di Maggio was founded in 1971, when the successful textile entrepreneur Arnaldo Caprai bought the estate with the intent to cultivate and enhance the native variety of Sagrantino. The winery is located in Montefalco, in the heart of Umbria, and today has achieved an extension of 150 hectares belonging to the areas of the Montefalco DOCG and the Colli Martani DOC. The continental climate of its surroundings, with warm summers that tend to be dry and cold winters with sporadic snow, favors an excellent cultivation of varieties of grapes such as Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for the red wines and Grechetto, Sauvignon and Chardonnay for the White wines.
Tradition and innovation are the key words of this company, that, believing in the potential of this rich territory, work through a continuous experimentation, both in the field of agronomy and winemaking, to produce wines of great quality.
The “Falesco” Wine Company was founded in 1979 in Montefiascone by the brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, both oenologists and deeply rooted in this land between Lazio and Umbria.
One of the main objectives was to work to recover the ancient vineyards of the area. The territory, in effect, had enjoyed over the past centuries a fame thanks to the production of extraordinary wines, exclusive of the papal dining halls and of the ancient nobility, but for many decades in a worrying state of neglect. Then, long years of research and selections began, with the aim of finding out ancient clones, now considered extinguished, and flimsy but of high aromatic and organoleptic value micro–varieties that, in the specialized vineyards of the 60s, were almost disappeared. Near this operation of recovery, they tried to identify the vinegrowing areas where the exposure and the peculiarity of the soil could guarantee wines of very high quality. Here the most ancient and rare local white grape varieties survived, among which Roscetto that, as research on DNA carried out by prof. Attilio Scienza proves, derives from the family of the Greco grapes.
At the same time, a modern winery was built, where the use of modern technologies for the fermentation could enhance the aroma and taste heritage of local grapes.
10 years after, in 1989, the production of EST! EST!! EST!!! Poggio dei Gelsi began, which succeeded, in a few years, to give back prestige to a territory and a wine that had been unjustly forgotten.
Starting from the 1998 winery, then, after many years of experience and research on the fascinating Roscetto variety, we have produced Ferentano, a wine that expresses in the best way the potential and the richness of this grapes. To follow, a particular clone of Merlot.
Montiano, produced in the 1993 vintage, from the beginning had been acclaimed as one of the greatest and most innovative Italian red wines, distinguishing themselves for their outstanding elegance, for their precious aromatic value and for their great concentration and structure. Montiano has showed one more time the vocation to quality of our lands. The goal was to find out which grape was able to express it in the best way.
With the 2001 vintage, then, we considered important to give value to another vine, historically linked to the area surrounding Lake Bolsena. From Azienda Agricola Pomele, in effect, Aleatico grapes come, from which we obtain a wine, Pomele, that stands out for the aromatic notes typical of this variety, for its freshness and pleasantness.
In recent times, Falesco has enriched its estate purchasing the Marciliano farm, of more or less 260 hectares, located on the wonderful hill south of Orvieto, in the municipalities of Montecchio and Baschi. From these vineyards Merlot, Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes come, for the production of Vitiano and Merlot dell’Umbria, as well as Vermentino and Verdicchio for Vitiano Bianco.
From the best vineyard of the company, wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon clusters are grown, for the making of a wine that owes its name to the same company: Marciliano, that expresses fully the character of these grapes cultived in these lands. In the same area we planted, in collaboration with the University of Tuscia of Vitero, an experimental vineyard with more than 32 different varieties. They range from Nero D’Avola to Primitivo, from Malbech to Tannat, from Carmenere to Montepulciano, to Teroldego. We deeply believe in this Territory and we want to check the potential adaptability of other varieties to the special conditions of soil and climate of the Marciliano area.

The family keeps our work united, is not a simple division of tasks, but a common feeling, in love as we are with what every day spent here gives us. We know that living and working in Palazzone is a privilege, and this feeling becomes a certainty when things get tough. We respect the tradition of Orvieto in the composition of the blend letting Grechetto, more immediate and fragrant, and Procanico, more serious and mineral, assert their personality. We love the idea that the profile of a white wine of central Italy can be created: graceful but incisive, Mediterranean and at the same time with a closed structure. We are proud to make a white wine at an encouraging price, we want to invite people to enjoy a reliable wine that “feels” the difference among the different vintages.
Our conception of wine is intimately linked to the vineyard: only from here the real satisfactions can come out, those that remain. The grapes of Orvieto have not the solar expressiveness of some of the “easy” grapes, and their margins of improvement are not so immediate. Therefore, for the work in the vineyard we rely on continuity, more than on miraculous choices.
The Decugnano dei Barbi agricultural company, one of the most renowned wine producers of Umbria, stands on a hill overlooking the cliff of Orvieto, in the heart of the ancient Orvieto Classico production area. The special and privileged position of the company determines the ideal conditions for a quality production.
The climate, microclimate and sun exposure are particularly suitable for the cultivation of vineyards, as well as the soil of marine origin, of marl and clay, rich in fossils of oysters and shells of the Pliocene age. An ideal ventilation of the vineyards completes, in the end, the uniqueness of this situation.
Colpetrone is one of the most important wineries in the district of the D.O.C.G. of Montefalco. Sagrantino, a grape variety native to this area, is one of the oldest in Italy and the most rich in tannins and polyphenols. For this reason, it requires a very careful process that enhances its power and uniqueness, and that ensures the right balance and elegance. In the vineyard, high quality farming systems have been adopted with yields of 60 quintals per hectare, well below the 80 quintals permitted by the specification. Montefalco Sagrantino is produced in three versions: Montefalco Sagrantino dry, raisin and “Gold” selection, which is the result of studies carried out in recent years by the business staff of this vine with great potential.
Within the estate of Villa Mongalli a vineyard of 15 hectares has been planted, whose prized grapes produce wines of the highest quality, both for the rare and peculiar characteristics of the clay soil with a compact structure, therefore light, warm and permeable (an optimal terroir for vines), and for its good exposure, and for the passion and commitment lavished by the family, assisted by experts of national reputation, in the production of Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco. The vineyard, located at an average altitude of about 370 meters above sea level, is cultivated with the objective to get the grapes perfectly healthy and capable of producing great wines linked to the territory of Montefalco.
The individual varieties of grapes are vinified separately and, moreover, selective processes are conducted according to ripeness, to the exposure and to the nature of the terrain. The collection is normally done with a careful selection of the grapes and fermentation is carried out using modern technology, exclusively in a natural way, ie without the addition of selected yeasts. Our aim was, from the outset, to produce wines with a strong personality that did not exclude a reinterpretation of a native vine like Sagrantino.
The Tabarrini family has been growing its vineyards with love and has been producing wines in Montefalco, in Turrita locality, for four generations. Only at the end of the 90s, thanks to the intuition and the enthusiasm of Giampaolo Tabarrini, the company changes pace, deciding to bottle wines and to make the most of years of work. A little later, the new winery was founded, surrounded by hills and vineyards, shaping a charming and typical Umbrian landscape where man and nature come together. But it is from love for the land that great wines come. Of the 22 hectares of the estate, 11 are those cultivated with vineyard. Here, Sagrantino, that in Montefalco finds its raison d’être, has a central role, irreplaceable and fascinating. The Tabarrini family treats it with respect and pride, like the other properties of grapes, which are the only ones to be turned into wine. From the grapes to the bottle. And this is the true philosophy of a family that follows in first person, with great care and passion, every single step of its creatures.
Fattoria Colleallodole of Milziade Antano is a typical peasant family’s farm. The company belonged to the Cav. Milziade Antano, one of the local producers of the historical area of Montefalco, who managed it personally. After his untimely death, the management passed to his heirs. Milziade had worked as a sharecropper in companies of Umbria, until 1969, when he decided to buy 30 hectares of land, beginning to plant vineyards and to breed Chianina cattle. In 1975 the first production of MONTEFALCO ROSSO and SAGRANTINO PASSITO took place, with the addition of SAGRANTINO SECCO and, in the 80s, the aging in bottles began. Francesco, the young son of Milziade, sharing the same passion for the land, soon decided to follow in the footsteps of his father, helping him in the running of the farm, and in 1997 he produced for the first time SAGRANTINO COLLEALLODOLE DOCG. Sagrantino, become CRU of the Farm, is made with grapes from a vineyard with special features and its designation comes from the fancy name “Colleallodole”, inspired by the migration of larks that, in the month of October, have always crossed the knolls and slopes of these hills. Francesco, rich in experience gained close to his father, using only part of the means that technology offers, continues his work, in the tradition of the area, with the ancient and timeless ways of winemaking, with accuracy and constancy, having started with passion, since he was young, to learn the craft of the winemaker. The philosophy of Francesco is faithful to the teachings of his father, according to which quality starts from the ground and from the attention given to the cultivation of vines, distinguishing Fattoria Colleallodole from the others in the area of Montefalco. The care with which the steps of pruning and harvesting of grapes take place is very high, with a careful selection, both of workers, and of the period in which to perform the work in the vineyards. Fattoria Colleallodole currently covers 40 hectares, of which 12 are planted with vineyards. The farm is member of the Consortium for the Protection of Montefalco Wines.

Founded by Giorgio Lungarotti at the beginning of the 60s, the company is now run by sisters Chiara Lungarotti and Teresa Severini. Their commitment and openness to innovation that characterize them, have infused a strong impetus to the company, reinforcing a concrete example of family positivity, as a guarantee not only of the present, but also of the future.
The Foresi family has been running the winery since 1953. Today Maria Grazia and her grandson Alessandro run this importan wine company.
