Re Manfredi

Terre degli Svevi is a young winery recently established, was founded in 1998 when GIV takes it over from a noble family that owned lands and buildings in Venosa.

The Vulture is an area particularly suited to the production of great wines, in particular Aglianico, that is a vigorous wine and has nothing to envy to the structure, body and complexity to the famed Italian Amarone or Barolo.

Aglianico is the most prevalent grape variety in Basilicata, but also in the province of Avellino in the Campania region, where it is also known by the name of Gnanico, Agliatica, Ellenico, Ellanico and Uva Nera.



Its origins are very ancient and it seems it was already cultivated in Roman times.

Thus, for Terre degli Svevi the design of a winery focused on producing high quality Aglianico del Vulture begins, a real niche in the market both in Italy and abroad. It starts almost immediately replanting 120 hectares of vineyards to produce Re Manfredi Aglianico, the company’s flagship and immediately joined by an Aglianico of the Serpara Vineyard.

Re Manfredi, historical character of the region, was the son of Frederick II of Swabia, on the death of his father became regent of Southern Italy, in 1258.

He was excommunicated by Pope Innocent IV, who was facing its political independence, and elected King of Sicily in Palermo. He reigned until 1266, when he died at the battle of Benevento.

Dante speaks of him in the Divine Comedy.
Re Manfredi Aglianico has been awarded with the "3 Bicchieri" by Gambero Rosso and "5 Grappoli" by AIS, together with Serpara.

Then several gold medals in international competitions such as Mundus Vini, Expo Vina, the global contest of Bordeaux, have come.

A few years after the establishment of Terre degli Svevi a White wine of great success has been added: Re Manfredi Bianco, created from allogeneic vines (Muller Turgau and Traminer).

Terre Degli Svevi

Cantine Del Notaio

The passion for winemaking of the Giuratrabocchetti family has been handed down for generations. It is from this tradition that in 1998, the Cantine del Notaio winery was founded, when Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, graduated in Agricultural Science, gathers, with his wife Marcella, the challenge of enhancing the Aglianico del Vulture grown in their own vineyards, combining tradition, innovation, history and culture of the area.

With Professor Luigi Moio, Professor of Oenology at the University of Neaples "Federico II", deepens his research on the potentials of this varietal of wine, the most important in Southern Italy, austere and generous at the same time and able of giving wines of the extraordinary personality.

Azienda Vinicola Paternoster

Since the beginning of the latest century our family has been constantly devoted to vinegrowing and winemaking in the Vulture area.

Grandfather Anselmo, the first author of the success of the house, taking over the noble art of wine making from his father, decided in 1925 (a date still visible on the company’s door), to put up for sale the first bottles of Aglianico, until then produced for a family and friendly consumption. Some label types, photos and other tools of the period are still jealously guarded by us.

This was the beginning, almost involuntary, of a dignified enterprise, now in its third generation, with absolute respect for tradition, the historical context, the place and the environment.

The total production is around 150,000 bottles a year, whose number is strictly kept the same, in order to ensure over time a level of quality that allows us to turn to a medium–high target of consumers, lovers of quality.

Numerous are the awards won over the years both in Italy and abroad, as well as numerous are the articles in the trade press that recognize to the company the first great merits of spreading Aglianico, as well as recognizing it as a point of reference in the entire Vulture area. Despite the market and of image consensus, the spirit and the philosophy of the company remain unchanged, very linked to the territory, especially in Barile, the center of ancient vinegrowing and winemaking vocations, as evidenced by the Wineres area, a picturesque site that consists of over a hundred ancient wine cellars dug into the tuff representing the symbol of the art of wine making in Barile.

Cantina di Venosa

One of the most renowned wineries in Southern Italy, the Venosa Winery, a company in the homonymous town in Lucania. The Venosa Winery was founded in 1957 by 27 founding members, by the will, the perseverance, the ability of aggregation of this group of vinegrowers which has meant that today the winery has 500 members, with an area of ​​about 900 hectares, the majority in the Municipality of Venosa, the largest producer of Aglianico grapes in the Vulture area. The facilities available are at the forefront, but technique, love and care are the traditional ones: a careful management of members in harvesting operations, selection of the best grapes, attention in the early stages of maceration and fermentation, meticolousness in the early stages of aging, in which Aglianico is transferred into French oak barrels and casks to get the superior quality for which it excels. Aglianico was introduced in Italy by the Greeks at the time of the foundation of Cumae or so later, while the transformation of the Hellenic name in Hellanica and then in Aglianico can be traced back to the late fifteenth century, at the time domain of Aragon in the Kingdom of Naples. Refinement and delicacy both in taste and in the aroma that characterizes grapes, which can capture the variety grown in hilly areas of the Vulture area, requirements that recognized the Aglianico del Vulture of the Designation of Controlled Origin.

Basilisco

For millennia, the majestic volcano Vulture has been vigiling on this territory, feeding a simple, spontaneous viticulture, scattered with small vines in sheds.

In the seventh century BC, the Greeks introduced here the Hellanica vine – later called “Aglianico”, in Spanish pronunciation – that found in this land, fiercely sloping and with intense minerals, the ideal place to produce fruit.

The magical beauty of these places seduced the Albanian refugees who, in the fifteenth century, settled here fleeing due to the Turkish threat. They dug long caves into the tuff as shelters, creating – in the core of the lava flows – the traditional wine cellars where even today Aglianico del Vulture is vinified.

In its wines, Basilisco concentrates today the spirit of this land, its simple but immense wealth, its timeless tradition.

Musto Carmelitano

Musto Carmelitano is a family run agriculture company managed by Elisabetta, passion–driven and sincere businesswoman who, with the help of her whole family, has invested in the quality of her produce. In 2007, in collaboration with Fortunato Sebastiano, oenologist expert in the production of craft wines coming from organic viticulture, it was possible to obtain exceptional wines, combining tradition and a conception of wine more ich in personality and grounded on precise businees peculiarities. The Aglianico del Vulture grapes are exclusively selected and harvested by hand, cultivated according to the organic method.

The company vinifies the grapes from different vineyards of the company separately: the Pian del Moro vine (planted 80 years ago), the Serra del Prete vine (45 years old) and the Vernav vine (25 years old). They care a lot about transforming grapes into wine with the objective of preserving all its precious organoleptic features. To make this happen, they avoid filtrations, clarifications and stabilizations and any other intervention. The Musto Carmelitano wines are produced in the traditional way, respecting the environment and the consumer protection.

Camerlengo

"Camerlengo" is the title of the Cardinal who administers the Apostolic Chamber and takes care of the worldly goods of the Holy See.

The name of this beautiful wine is inspired by the events subsequent to Frederick II in 1250 when the Guelphs and Ghibellines fighted fiercely to defend the Pope and the Swabians, respectively.

In those years, Manfredi, son of Frederick, supported by loyal ones, went in the various towns of Lucania which in that political uncertainty had declared themselves faithful to the Pope.

As he passed, Manfredi obtained more and more consensus and support, but in the city of Rapolla things went differently.

Rapolla was loyal to the Pope and, confident in his support and protection, strenuously resisted the armed siege of Manfredi.

In this way the Pope, through Cardinal Camerlengo, in sign of recognition for so much loyalty, gave to Rapolla some land to cultivate.

D'Angelo

The D’Angelo company represents in Basilicata the history of Aglianico del Vulture, was created around 30s, founded by Rocco D’Angelo, grandfather of the current owners Erminia and Rocco D’Angelo, children of Lucio D’Angelo. The initial activity was to export to Northern Italy fresh grapes of Aglianico, that vinified served to cut wines of little body and pale color.

In 1971, with the attribution of D.O.C. (controlled designation of origin) things changed a bit since they started marketing a wine with its own identity and story. The company is located in the most classic production of Aglianico del Vulture among Rionero, Barile, Rapolla and Ripacandida, has more than 40 hectares of vineyards, produces about 400,000 bottles of different types and has a two wine cellars, one for processing and one of aging in barrels and barriques.
