The Consortium for the Protection of the Collio and Carso Wines was founded on 1st January 2010 by the fusion of the historic Consortium for the Protection of the Collio wines (1964) and the Consortium for the Protection of the Carso wines.
It deals with the protection, enhancement and promotion of the Collio and Carso designations that, while maintaining their distinctive identity, benefit from the synergies of knowledge and skills typical of the hilly viticulture.
The Consortium for the Protection of the "Colli Orientali del Friuli" Designation of Origin Wines was founded in 1970. Several decades have gone by now, and during this period of time the viticulture of these areas has been greatly enhanced, imposing itself at a national and international level. In the development phase, significant was the activity of training, information, technical assistance and promotion carried out by the Consortium parallel to the institutional role of supervision and protection on the use of the D.O.C.
Since January 2010 a new reality has been created, the result of an aggregation process that the Consortium has undertaken with the Consortium for the Protection of Ramandolo D.O.C.G. This unique structure, called Consortium for the Protection of the "Colli Orientali del Friuli e Ramandolo" Wines currently has the management of the Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C,, the Picolit D.O.C.G., the Ramandolo D.O.C.G. and, since 2011, of the Rosazzo D.O.C.G.
Today the Consortium brings together about 200 members, of which about three quarters are bottlers. From their own vineyards (2,000 hectares registered) they produce over 80,000 hectoliters of D.O.C. wines, of which at least 30 per cent is sold abroad. An export intended mainly to European countries, but that does not exclude countries such as the United States or Japan. Austria and Germany remain important markets where the Consortium organizes regular presentations and tastings that are particularly appreciated by the members and the public. An activity of promotion coordinated by a small staff that Cividale has the good fortune to work in a prestigious building of the 15th century a few steps from the Duomo – in which the tourists in search for informative material about the wines of the Eastern Hills do not fail to stop for some time, looking admiringly at the stone walls and at the graceful columns, perfectly preserved and restored.
The producers of the areas of D.O.C. Colli Berici (since 1982) and Vicenza (since 2000) have come together in the Volunteer Consortia for the Protection of DOC wines which have as its main aim to protect, promote and represent the interests related to the DOC.
Until now, both consortia have acted and worked with organizational structures and autonomous directional organogrammas, sharing the operating and exhibition spaces of the Palace of Wine (Palazzo Pisani) of Lonigo (Vicenza), together with the Wine Route of the Berici Hills.
In view of the significant innovative regulations introduced by the Legislative Decree on April 8th, 2010, n° 61, and given the substantial role attributed to the new Consortia for the protection of designations of origin, the governing bodies of the Consortium for the protection of the Colli Berici DOC wines and the Consortium for the protection of the Vicenza DOC wines have started a process of actual melting of the two existing consortia in order to form a single relevant one, which meets the requirements of the Ministerial Decree of December 16th, 2010, in addition to what is stated in the Legislative Decree n°61/2010. In this way, the activity of the consortium for the protection and enhancement of the designations should be more efficient and effective, allowing to concentrate more resources for strategic actions.
This form of aggregation should also bring:
the growth in size of the structure resulting in a more advantageous bargaining position;
a rationalization of the resources used with consequent efficiency gains and savings in general and administrative costs;
the strengthening of the organizational structure and the integration of the services offered.
Interventions, which thanks to the large number of members and their consequent weight may increasingly move towards a vision of a best business–entrepreneurial vision, that allows timely decisions to safeguard effectively the local products, as well as efficiently promoting both at national and international level the wine produced and protected, at the same time clears the field from unproductive constraints and reasons.
Today, the Consortium for the Protection of the Colli Berici and Vicenza is the new organizational reality. It represents about 60% of the wine production in Vicenza, bringing together and representing both private companies and cooperatives, aiming to become more and more a strategic technical and promotional point of reference for important and prestigious wineries in the province.
The objectives of the new Consortium are:
to enhance the protected designations giving them a distinctive identity, that will result in a productive and economic value;
to promote the knowledge of the designations and to increase their competitiveness in the market;
to broaden the shareholder base and to increase the number of services offered to members (training, workshops, incoming of industry operators etc.).
The foothills of Vicenza have always been a land of great wine–growing tradition and since 1969 boasts the Breganze Designation of Controlled Origin, the first in the Vicenza area.
It comprises the hills and the next plains included in the three valleys of the rivers Astico and Brenta; of this area Breganze is almost the geographic center, while the other cornerstones are Thiene to the West and Bassano del Grappa to the East.
The D.O.C. is managed by the Consortium of Protection which has its headquarters in Breganze: formed in 1982 by five wine producers of the area, today unites sixteen members winemakers.
The Consortium is an interprofessional non–profit industry association, for the protection, enhancement and care of the interests of the Breganze Designation of Controlled Origin.
From the point of view of wine, the D.O.C. Breganze includes fifteen types of wine: Rosso, Merlot, Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Marzemino, Bianco, Tai, Vespaiolo, Vespaiolo Spakling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Torcolato.
Among these, the most famous and representative is certainly Breganze Torcolato, obtained from the most beautiful dried bunches of Vespaiola, the native grape variety of Breganze.
The Garda Classico D.O.C. coincides largely with the area that overlooks the Brescia side of Lake Garda. A territory where the cultivation of the vine has ancient origins, which lie even in pre–Roman times. This deep–rooted tradition in 1967 resulted in obtaining the "Garda Bresciano" D.O.C., later integrated into the Garda D.O.C.. Since 1996, the area has obtained the recognition of the word "Classico" granted, as known, only to the wines of old and established tradition. Today, the Garda Classico D.O.C. is a sub–area which has 550 hectares of vineyards, worked by about eighty producers for a total of about 3,500 tons of grapes produced each year. The production is currently more than 2 million bottles.
Garda Classico is synonymous especially red wines, and in particular with Groppello, the native vine that is a real exclusive wine of the area as it is cultivated in appreciable quantities only in the hills of Valtnesi, the productive "heart" of the area. From this particular grape variety, Garda Classico Groppello D.O.C. and the Garda Classico Chiaretto D.O.C., the two most known and appreciated products of the Riviera, are made.
In the Garda Classico D.O.C. Consortium, recently also the small San Martino della Battaglia D.O.C. merged, which covers mainly with the municipalities of Pozzolengo, Sirmione, Desenzano, Lonato and partially coincides with that of the Garda Classico. Recognized in 1970, this D.O.C. of 65 hectares of vineyards, on which a few dozen producers operate, brings the original contribution of a white wine, San Martino della Battaglia D.O.C. and a dessert wine, the San Martino della Battaglia Fortified wine.
Moreover, the types protected by the Consortium which fall into the Benaco Bresciano Typical Geographical Indication should not be forgotten: there are about 150 thousand bottles that companies use mainly for single–variety production that contribute to further enrich the profile of a dynamic segment, that is growing, which in recent years, thanks to the establishment of the Wine and Dine Route of Garda, is experiencing a new development of wine tourism.
The wine with designation of origin is an impressive product, the result of the symbiosis of natural factors, like climate, soil and grape variety, and human factors, like customs, technological choices and research. With the recognition of the Arcole designation of origin published on 13/09/2000, an extensive area of high wine–growing tradition of Verona and Vicenza went in this way to further redevelop its productions.
The production zone is located, in effect, in the municipalities of Arcole, Cologna Veneta, Albaredo, Zimella, Veronella, Zevio, Belfiore, Caldiero, San Bonifacio, Soave, Colognola ai Colli, Monteforte, Lavagno, Pressana, Vago and San Martino Buon Albergo in the Province of Verona ed in the municipalities of di Lonigo, Sarego, Monte, Orgiano and Sossano in the Province of Vicenza. The vineyard area which falls within the contained area enrolled in the register of the vineyards of the Arcole D.O.C. covers about 2,500 hectares in the province of Verona and about 1,000 hectares in the Province of Vicenza.
Within the production area the Regulations provide for a more restricted area with the possibility to use, next to the name of the "Arcole" designation, also the name of the grape variety. This area includes nine municipalities: those of San Bonifacio, Arcole, Caldiero, Belfiore, Zimella, Cologna Veneta, Veronella, Zevio, Albaredo d’Adige, some entirely, others only partially, all of which are located in the province of Verona.
The characteristic of this area is to have a good part of the soil with a high percentage of sand, a parameter that makes the ground more suited to growing grapes for a wine of great quality. However, the current production is actually still characterized by quite high planting distance with "a pergola veronese" forms of breeding.
The most immediate needs are, therefore, to update the ampelographic base according to what has been proposed by the specification for upgrading plants. With the need to manage and exploit this important time of transformation and productive evolution on 8th February 2001, the Consortium for the Protection of Arcole D.O.C. Wine was founded.
The producers who are members of this structure represent most of the 80% of the productive potentialities of the whole area. The same proportion of representativeness is valid as regards vinification and marketing.
According to the statutes, the Consortium is called upon to:
1. protect, enhance and look after the interests relating to the designation of origin of the Arcole D.O.C. wines, as well as:
2. carry out all the activities and tasks of Consortia by EU and national legislation in the field of wines with designation, with reference to the Law No.164/1992 and subsequent amendments and related regulations.
Another important aspect that does not appear formally in the rules of the specification and in the statute is the one related to the management of the Designation. To manage means to verify the economic impact of production on the market.
This is the great challenge that today even a young designation like the Arcole D.O.C. must face, a challenge that must also involve other parties in addition to producers, because designation and typicality are a collective heritage of an area.
The Consortium for the Protection of the DOC Wines “Bagnoli” have not speculative aims and was created by private producers of the most modern and biggest Cooperative Wineries in Italy. All vinegrowers, single or joined, winemakers and bottlers of the area can become members. The current president is Dr. Lorenzo Borletti and the vice–president is Mr. Antonio Melato.
The Consortium for the Protection of the Valpolicella D.O.C. Wines is an associative reality of vinegrowers, winemakers and bottlers, operating on the territory for more than 40 years now, with the aim of protecting the quality of the Valpolicella wines and ensuring compliance with the rules laid down by the specification.
Its tasks cover many sectors, of which one of the most important is the preservation and protection of the Designation, in addition to its development and promotion in the domestic and international markets.
The almost daily contact with each single company, from the family–run ones up to major industry groups, qualifies the Consortium as an important subject and a certain point of reference for anyone who wants to deepen his/her knowledge of Valpolicella and its famous wines.
Terradeiforti is a small D.O.C. area which extends between the Veneto and Trentino regions, in a valley shaped by the glaciers of the Quaternary period and carved by the river Adige. It includes the hilly area of the Municipalities of Rivoli Veronese, Brentino Belluno, Dolce Avio for more than 1,300 hectares of vineyards. A route of communication between the Mediterranean world and the Alps since time immemorial, as evidenced by the impressive crown of castles and forts accompanying the Adige along its path, this area has a long winemaking tradition. The Terradeiforti–Valdadige Designation protects and promotes the types of Enantio and Casetta, native red wines, and Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.
Founded with the name of Consortium for the Protection of Soave and Recioto di Soave Wines. The Consortium brings together both production workers and professional categories involved in winemaking and wine marketing.
With approximately 500,000 hectoliters of wine, Soave is the most significant slice of the productions with a designation of origin in the province of Verona (about 40%) in which 10% of the Italian DOC and 50% of those from the Veneto region are concentrated.
The Consortium has no speculative goals and aims, in particular:
to protect viticulture in the production area of Soave and Recioto di Soave wines and to defend their production;
to promote knowledge and the dissemination of Soave and Recioto di Soave wines and to defend their production;
to promote knowledge and the dissemination of Soave and Recioto di Soave wines playing anywhere a special promotion;
to pay attention in order to avoid the marketing of wines produced with other grapes or defective wines or that do not have the characteristics of a protected origin wine;
to implement an effective supervision, in collaboration with the State bodies, to prevent abuse and fraud with the irregular use of Soave and Recioto di Soave designations;
to defend in every seat, even legal, the legitimate collective interests;
to assist the consortium members in the improvement of the culture of protected wines, monitoring the field to make that the the product specifications are correctly applied;
to promote the recognition of the designation of controlled and guaranteed origin of Soave Superiore and Recioto di Soave wine.
In 1962 a group of 11 producers, representing the main wine–growers’ cooperatives and large sparkling wine houses, formed the Consortium for the Protection of Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene, introducing a product specification to protect the quality and the image of the wine. Seven years later, on April 2nd, 1969, their efforts were rewarded with the recognition by the Ministry of agriculture, of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene as the only one DOC area of production of Prosecco and Superiore di Cartizze. Today, the Consortium for the Protection brings together almost all the producers of the territory and its protection work has become increasingly important, determinant of the achievement of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG, which took place in August 2010.
The Consortium is a private institution of public interest and brings together all categories of producers: vinegrowers, winemakers, bottlers. Through its technical facilities and its collaboration with research institutes, it plays an important role in improving the labor in the vineyard and in the wine cellar, providing services of support and training.
The Consortium follows all the phases of production from planting to pruning, up to the choice of the vintage period and the control of winemaking practices.
In addition to promoting the development of viticulture and wine–making techniques, the work of the Consortium is to ensure and improve the quality of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and for this reason it works with Valoritalia, a foundation established in 2005 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for the control of quality and the traceability of the product. As a keen observer of the market and of the evolution of tastes and lifestyles, the Consortium is a major landmark and its role is also to make know and to protect the image of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene in Italy and abroad, thanks to the organization of events and plans of communication.
In parallel with the recognition of the DOCG , the Consortium has launched a major program of analysis and development of the values of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Brand, with the objective to focus on the development of the territory and to environmental sustainability, the enhancement of the history as a guide for shaping the future and the commitment to preserve over time the superior quality of this great wine.
The qualification of agricultural production is always the most important goal for producers who dedicate, often for generations, their lives to the improvement of products. But excellence, in addition to being obtained in the recognized ways, must also be maintained, protected, guaranteed. This is the meaning and purpose of the free union in the consortium. The Consortium for the Protection of the Piave wines was founded, in 1959, by the same spontaneous will. Once formed, the Consortium invited immediately manufacturers to improve the quality standards of their wines. The best productions of the wines of the Piave showed up on the market with a consortium trademark that certifies that the company has voluntarily subjected its products to chemical and organoleptic tests made by special consortium committees. In 1963, the State Law n° 930 combined the action of the Chambers of Commerce in favor of the wine sector with the tasks that the voluntary Consortium of protection was due to perform in the same field.
Since then, the activities of an institutional nature and the ones of promotion were conducted by the two organizations with one common goal: to promote viticulture in suitable areas of the province and to enhance the quality wines on the market. The result of this commitment today consists of the wines with the “Vini del Piave” designation of origin. The role of the Chamber of Commerce is primarily to guarantee compliance by manufacturers with the rules established by the product specification recognized with a special ministerial decree. In addition, the institution has set a register of vineyards in which may be included, for each type of wine, the lands cultivated with vines within the area of production.
The first guarantee, therefore, is the compliance with the maximum yield of grapes. The second is given by the intervention of the Chamber of Commerce of the special tasting committees composed of technicals and experts who evaluate the organoleptic characteristics of products in relation to the requirements of the product specification. Only with a suitability outcome the lot can be marketed with the DOC.
The Voluntary Consortium for the Protection of Wines with Designation of Origin "Lison - Pramaggiore" was established on 3rd November 1974 to promote and protect the three D.O.C. wines then recognized: Tocai di Lison, Merlot and Cabernet Pramaggiore.
The principal activity of the consortium is to ensure that the wines of the members are placed on the market in full compliance with national and EU legislation. Thus exercises a supervisory action in order to prevent abuse and fraud with the improper use of the Lison–Pramaggiore, defending the collective interests.
In addition, the Consortium offers its members a technical support service in viticulture and enology, and last but not least, tries to provide each producer, through research and experimentation, the right information to exploit the peculiarities of its own vineyard.
Particular attention also paid to integrated pest management in viticulture to ensure that we can bring to maturity the grapes with the least possible number of pesticide treatments. With pride, we can say that on this delicate issue, which affects the healthiness of the final product and environmental protection, producers have shown particular sensitivity scrupulously following the advice that they are given to them by the technicians of the consortium.
At the headquarters of the Consortium, a modern, well equipped laboratory for enochemical and soil analysis operates, accredited according to a UNI EN 17025 law and officially licensed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
