Grape of ancient origins, whose earliest evidence dates back to the fourteenth century (with Pietro de' Crescenzi) and that is currently grown in the Langhe and Roero, in the province of Cuneo, in the Canavese area and in particular in the municipality of Carema, in the province of Turin. It is present also in the provinces of Biella, Novara, and in the high Vercelli and Astigiano areas. The etymology seems to be derived from "fog", not clear whether to define the appearance of the berry, dark, but tarnished by a thick layer of pruina (waxy and matting substance on the grape skin), or for the late maturation of grapes, which are often harvested when the autumn fogs have already begun. It is one of the noblest grape varieties of the ampelographic world and it has the characteristic of being cultivated only in Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta and Valtellina. Depending on the area of cultivation, Nebbiolo is called differently: Spanna in the provinces of Novara and Vercelli, Picotner or Picotendro in Valle d'Aosta and Alto Canavese, Prunent in Val d'Ossola, Chiavennasca in Valtellina. In the chosen area of Alba, then, there are Nebbiolo Lampia, Ros and Michet: these are the three main sub-varieties of the area.
