Azienda Agricola Pacenti Franco, established in the 1970's by Franco's father Rosildo. It took on its current name and the trade mark Canalicchio in 1988 when Franco took over management along with his wife, creating the current company.
The farm which covers approximately 36 hectares, 10 of which dedicated to vineyards and 1 to olive groves, is located in Canalicchio - a village whose fame comes from its age-long tradition for vine growing and wine making and is still family-run with the help of the children Lisa, Serena e Lorenzo.
One type of vine is grown, Sangiovese, which gives four varieties of wine: Rosso Toscana IGT "Il Bersaglio", Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva. Extra-Virgin olive Oil and Grappa di Brunello are also produced.
The wines can be accompanied by cold meats, cheeses, bruschetta and, if booked before by typical Tuscan dishes
La Poderina is located in Montalcino in the area of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, an area known for its elegance and the balance of its grapes. With a corporate philosophy that believes in innovation in the service of tradition, the wines of La Poderina undergo maturation in French oak barrels as well as in large barrels. In the vineyard, highly qualitative farming systems are employed, with yields of 60 quintals per hectare are adopted, well below the 80 tons allowed by the specification. Brunello is produced in two versions: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and the election Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Banale DOCG. La Poderina also produces: Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Virgùlto Rosso di Toscana IGT, Grappa di Brunello, Moscadello di Montalcino DOC.
Tenuta Sesti is composed of 102 hectares (254 acres) of land, of which nine hectares of vineyard. The rest is cultived with olives or woods.
Vineyards are located in excellent position on the southern slopes of Montalcino, where some of the most prestigious Brunello come from.
Piancornello is a small company founded in 1991. It is located in the south of Montalcino, about 250 meters above sea level and in an area of sedimentary orgines, very rich in stones and rocks. The steep slopes, ranging from a 4% to 15%, and the particularly draining land for the presence of the stone, allow to have little moisture and to obtain very structured and mineral wines. The vineyards of Piancornello lie on a beautiful upland that borders south with the river Orcia, which after 45 km flows into the sea, blowing across the valley, where hot winds coming from the Mediterranean go up the river. These features allow to have quite early harvests.
Giacomo and Enrichetta, their sons Giovanni, Gianlorenzo and Marianna. This is the Neri family, who lives in the Fiesole farm, near the winery and in close relationship with another ideal family: that of their employees. Giacomo is the charismatic figure, who holds high the intuition of his father Giovanni: that to found an exemplary company in Montalcino. The goal was reached thanks to expertise, passion and dedication. They are human, salient traits of a high quality production that is identified with people, and especially with Giacomo.
La Togata is owner of a small company in Montalcino (Siena) consisting of an old farmhouse dating back to the seventeenth century, at that time subservient to the Castle of Argiano, and of a few hectares of land devoted to the cultivation of vines and olive trees.
In particular, regarding vineyards, the company has the availability of vineyards registered in the Brunello Register in the area of the Pieve of S. Sigismondo, in that of Montosoli and in that of Pietrofocaia. The lands are located at different heights and with exposure to the sun until sunset. The age of vineyards, from which grapes intended to produce Brunello are selected, is over 20 years.
The company has as its objective the production of a limited amount of bottles of Brunello di Montalcino, with unique characteristics in body, elegance and fragrance. The vineyards, extremely healthy, are subject to a double thinning of the bunches and, during harvest, the average criterion of choice, in the good years, is three out of five clusters. The grapes obtained in this way are subsequently selected in the cellar, where they are processed according to the old tradition. Wine, after being left to age three years in the barrel, is aged for at least twelve months in bottle before release. It has ruby red color, fruity bouquet, harmonious and velvety flavour, and is especially suitable for long aging.
In the heart of the Montalcino area, Brunello di Montalcino Donna Olga is produced. It owes its name to the producer, Olga Peluso Centolani, vinegrower, passionate woman of wine, since many years committed in the creation of excellent wines.
Of the 11 hectares belonging to the agriculture ownership, a small jewel of nature and landscape, Donna Olga cultivates only 4 with Brunello, with selected clones from Sangiovese and a density of more than 6,500 plants per hectare.
Thanks to his love for the Tuscan countryside, his love for the land, with its cycles, its fruits and its mysteries, he creates 20,000 bottles per year of Brunello di Montalcino, a combination of power and elegance, finesse and structure, harmony and ability of long–term aging, which offers to lovers around the world that sensory fulfillment that only Great Wines can give.
Collelceto farm owes its name to the many Elce (Holm Oak) trees, that create charm and colour the hill, south–west the municipality of Montalcino, on which its vineyards and winery are located.
Citille di Sopra was founded in 1997 with the company transfer by the Innocenti family to their son Fabio. Already owner of part of the company since 1992, Fabio decided to undertake the winemaking activity to accompany his ten–year experience in the cultivation of cereals. From a careful analyses of the land, the rootstocks of cuttings and clones of Sangiovese to be planted were chosen. The various forms of cultivation of vines were carefully evaluated, but it was decided to use the spurred cordon, as both the limited quantities produced and the area in which we find ourselves, require to use this type of cultivation. Among more than one hundred hectares of land in ownership of Fabio Innocenti, currently only 5.5 ha are planted with vines, for which the best areas for the production of Brunello have been selected.
The soil is clayey on average, rich in limestone, interspersed with large areas of tufa, basically thin, ideal terrain for vines grown in the middle hill, avoiding, in these areas, the presence of fog, freezing and late hoarfrost, that may occur in valleys. The ventilation is almost constantly present, to ensure a good protection against plant diseases, while minimizing pesticide treatments.
The company was founded in 1965 by Alfo Bartolommei.
The Bartolommei family established itself in the municipality of Montalcino at the beginning of the latest century. The original family unit lived the Marzolo homestead in the municipality of Cinigiano (Province of Grosseto).
In 1911 the family moved to the Poggi homestead, a unit of Villa Santa Restituta Estate, running lands in sharecropping (typical way of management in Tuscany). The following years saw the family move to one homestead to another, belonging to Villa Santa Restituta Estate, until 1952, when they definitively moved to the Caprili homestead. The family came will all its livestock, running the fields as tenant farmers. In 1965 the Bartolommei family decided to purchase the property of the Castelli–Martinozzi sirs, owners of Villa Santa Restituta. In the same year, in 1965, they planted their first vineyard, named even today Madre, from which the clones for new plants are planted in the new company”s vineyards.
The first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino Caprili was produced in the 1978 vintage, and marketed in 1983.
Querce Bettina farm, owned by Mrs Vilma Sandra Barenghi, is situated in Montalcino (Si), in La Casina di Mocali, 275. The building of the house took place in 1994–1995, while the part devoted to agriculture has been completed by the construction of a winery of more or less 230 square meters, ended in 2005.
The farming surface consists of 29.15.68 hectares and includes 1 hectare of Brunello DOCG vineyard, 1,4 hectare of Rosso di Montalcino DOC vineyard, an olive grove 1,5 hectare large, in addition to cultivations and adjactent plots of land, for a total of 6,000 square meters. The estate is completed by about 24 hectares of Mediterranean scrub and bushy grazing land. The olive grove has been producing olives since 1995 and consists of more or less 530 plants, which counts a specialized selection including Cultivar Leccino, Moraiolo, Correggiolo and Impollinatore.
The vineyard was planted in March 1999 and in 2000, and began to produce in the 2002/2003 vintage. The vine plants, rigorously of Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello), are placed at a distance of more or less 2.5 meters between rows, and of about 80 cm between plants. The type of breeding is spurred cordon in single direction. The registrations in the wine book, currently, are: 01.00.00 hectares of DOCG Brunello and 01.35.00 DOC hectares of Rosso di Montalcino DOC, allowing an annual production of about 6,500 bottles of Brunello DOCG and about 9,000 bottles of Rosso di Montalcino DOC. The cultivations of the company are located at about 440 meters above sea level in the south–west slope of the hill of Montalcino and border with the Poggio Salvi, Bolsignano, Mocali and Zucca farms.
From the house, the horizon extends to several kilometers and offers wide views of Mount Amiata, Arcidosso, the mountains of the province of Grosseto, Poggio alle Mura (Villa Banfi), and of the metal–bearing areas of Civitella Marittima, Massa Marittima, Roccastrada. The company derives its products solely on its own cultivations and uses only owned processing plants, except for the pressing of the olives that takes place under the supervision of Robero and Sandra in a continuous cycle installation in Frantoio La Romita of the Bindi family in Montisi (Si). In the company, in addition to the owners, specialized operators work, who follow the entire process of cultivation and processing of fruits, with the contribution of the skills and the experience of an external agronomist and of the oenologist Paolo Caciorgnia.
The territory covers 25 hectars. Vineyards cover more or less 10 hectares, the remaining surface is composed of a specialized olive grove (2 hectares), arable soil and wood. The altitute of the vines, for which the best exposures have been chosen, ranges from 310 to 440 meters above sea level. Vines have an age ranging from 6 to 25 years. The vineyard is almost entirely grown with the “Sangiovese locally called Brunello” variety. Recently, 3 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet have been planted.
The soils are very poor organically but abundantly rocky, geologically belong to the marl of the Cretaceous period. The density of planting varies between 3,333 and 5,500 vines per hectare. The harvest usually takes place in early October.
The company covers approximately 200 hectares of woods, vineyards, olive groves and arable land.
The vineyards of Poggio Antico, at an average altitude of 450 meters above sea level, are among the highest in Montalcino. The constant breezes of this altitude sweep the fog and the humidity of the evening and the morning, and dry quickly grapes after rain, preventing the formation of mold and allowing us to avoid the relative treatments. This privileged position and the high exposure to south–southwest of the vineyards ensure optimal conditions, especially during the crucial period of maturation, when grapes reach a perfect balance between sugar and acidity.
The land – calcareous, stony and rich in marl – ensures excellent drainage and is particularly suitable for the production of quality grapes destined for wines of great body, such as Brunello di Montalcino. The combination of factors such as altitude, the location and the soil features, give the Poggio Antico wines a special character and great elegance.
Approximately 32.5 hectares belonging to the company are made up of vineyards. Of these, 15.5 hectares were planted in the 70s and are now being replaced with new plants that have led to a density of 6,060 plants per hectare. To cope with the continuous increase in the demand for Poggio Antico wines, it was decided to increase the surface area of hectares rather than increasing yields at the expense of quality. As a result, 17 hectares more were planted in May 1997 and in May 2001.
Today, the total planted area is of 30 hectares respectively of Sangiovese (also called Brunello when planted within the only territory of Montalcino) and 2.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1997 and used, in conjunction with Sangiovese, for our P.G.I. wine, Madre, created with the 2001 vintage.
Cerbaiola Salvioni company is located about 1 km from the town of Montalcino, on a ridge 420 m above sea level. The vineyard, completely planted with Brunello di Montalcino, covers approximately 4 hectares. The production of bottles is of 15,000 per year divided into Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. In the company there are two cellars, one within the company, where all the operations of harvest, vinification and storage of Rosso take place, and one located in the historic center of the city and is used for the storage of Brunello, that rests in barrels of 20hl on Slavonian oak. The company is led by Giulio Salvioni, his wife Mirella and their children David and Alessia.
The Poggio di Sotto farm is certainly considered one of the most important and most well–established firms in the district of Montalcino. Of property of the Mrs. Elisabeth and Mr. Piero Palmucci, since 1989 it can boast some of the best territories with regard to the cultivation of the Sangiovese Grosso grape variety in the southern slope of Montalcino, old vineyards in the territory of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, near the Abbey of Sant’Antimo.
A scrupolous attention of the vineyard and the winery are under the supervision of a great man of wine like Giulio Gambelli.
