The best wineries in Radda in Chianti.
Today, as in the eleventh century, the entire village is deeply involved in wine and olive growing, as vat rooms and wineries, vinsantaia and bottling place, orch room and oil mills, although very modern, are still housed in the basement, in the halls, in the desecrated churches and in the buildings of the village, joined together by an amazing underground wine duct. Volpaia is not, therefore, just a simple theater for tourists, but the center of a complex rural activity to which everyone living in the village is directly or indirectly related.
In the heart of Chianti, Agriturismo Monteraponi, is an ancient medieval village situated on the hill of the same name belonged to the Count Ugo Marchese and governor of Tuscany at the end of the tenth century, who donated it to the abbey he founded in Poggio Martori (High Poggibonsi).
The central structure remained almost intact, characterized by the presence of a tower with a square base. On the bridge house of the tower, archivolts, the typical windows of the twelfth century, are still visible and well–preserved. That building, for its central location and raised above the rest of the village, had to be the residence of the lord. Of the same period are the wine cellars beneath the tower surmounted by a large ceiling with a single vault, where the bottles of wine produced by the company are left to age.
When he decided to buy Castello d’Albola, after what he describes as a “lightning strike”, one of the aims of Gianni Zonin was to be able to give a new life to this production area of Tuscan wines of excellence. The construction of a new winery is part of this project.
After identifying the ideal position in order to reconcile the needs of production with respect for the surrounding landscape and environment, the structure was built on a panoramic hill at a short distance from the medieval village.
Carved into the rock, the wine cellar, which follows the natural slope of the hill above the vineyards and Castello d’Albola, is distributed on two levels. One external to the north, for the vinification of grapes and for technical areas, and an underground level allocated for two thirds to the storage of wines in stainless steel vats with controlled temperature thanks to a computerized system, and one third to the fining of red wines in oak barrels.
The bottling winery is separated from the mother and totally underground. The design of this premise has provided for the implementation of a green grass and the planting of olive trees above the roof to improve the inclusion in the surrounding agricultural context.
The vertical and horizontal structures, linear and simple in their architectural rigor, have been covered in local and of Alberse pietraforte and the roofings with a structure of lamellar wood for a front 100 meters long and 40 meters deep.
The historic underground wine cellars, with impressive vaults built in the past by the Pazzi family and by the Princes Ginori Conti – who lived in the ancient village of Albola, instead – have returned to life and now host large barrels of 60 hl of valuable Slavonian oak and other barriques in French oak from the Allier region.

The company has immediately been talked about, reaching just with the 1983 vintage the first place in an important tasting of Chianti Classico. Over the years, after a continuous research for quality and a strong identity, the position of Brancaia has strengthened further, also thanks to the most important wine of the company: Brancaia IL BLU, that is already a classic for many wine lovers all over the world.
Martin Kronenberg is responsible for the company management and the worldwide distribution. Barbara Kronenberg–Widmer, as a oenologist, takes care of production. They are supported by the renowned oenologist Dr. Carlo Ferrini.
Brancaia, today, is one of the most innovative companies in Tuscany. Each year its products are rewarded at national and international level. The Brancaia wines are distributed successfully worldwide.
Montevertine is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the Municipality of Radda in Chianti, 425 m of altitude.
The locality was, for sure, peopled since the eleventh century. There are still traces of the original construction, for defense, of course, lately transfromed into a farmhouse.
Montevertine was purchased in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, steel manufacturer, as holiday home. He restored the house to make it habitable. Soon, two hectares of vineyard were planted and a small winery was set up, with the idea to produce some wine for friends and customers.
The first vintage produced, the one of 1971, was quite good, ad Sergio Manetti had the idea to send some bottles to Vinitaly in Verona through the Chamber of Commerce of Siena. It was immediately a success and that enthused Mr. Manetti so much that, after a few years, left his primary activity to devote himself only to wine. New vineyards were planted, new wineries were built, and this without any interruption, with a business development that is still ongoing.
The farm, after the departure of Sergio Manetti that took place in November 2000, is now run by his son Martino Manetti with the collaboration of Bruno Bini, born in Montevertine and with deep knowledge of the area and the soils. Giulio Gambelli, master taster, offers his advice and assistance in the preparation of wines.
When Giorgio Bianchi, in 1974, sold his house in Milan, left his secure job and moved to Val delle Corti, the farm had been abandoned for years. The fields were overgrown with brambles, the dry stone walls of the terraces had collapsed, olive trees had grown wild. His was a risky bet, at a time when going to live in the country was not yet a trend and the future of Chianti Classico was extremely uncertain.
During long years of passionate work, aided by the invaluable advice of the neighbors – farmers for generations – and supported by his indefatigable wife Eli, Giorgio managed to learn the difficult art of viticulture and to revive Val delle Corti, making of it a small farming model. At the passing of George, which took place early in 1999, the company was handed down to his son Roberto and his wife Lis. Today, the four hectares of vineyards – recently re–planted with Sangiovese and other native red grape varieties – are producing Chianti Classico and a Reserve with great typicality, character and finesse. Wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels in the small but modern winery, while from the two hectares of specialized olive groves, a highly pure extra virgin olive oil with a very low acidity comes. Val delle Corti also produces a small amount of Vin Santo, the traditional dessert wine, and Grappa of Chianti Classico.
Val delle Corti is also hospitality: the "Capanna", the old stone barn recently renovated, welcomes every year visitors from all over the world who wish to regenerate themselves in the beautiful Chianti hills and to discover the pleasure of genuine and high quality products.
The Monterinaldi company has now fifty years, and still cultivates vineyards and produces its wines in respect of ancient traditions, but never passing up modernity.
