The first wine cellar operated by the Dragone family was run by Antonio Dragone in the 19th century. The wine cellar was next to the Domenican Convent, in the historic heart of the city of Matera. Around the year 1920, Michele Dragone founded the famous cellar in Via S. Biagio, which at the time was the heart of agricultural society in Matera. The Dragone family first put its label on a bottle of wine in 1955. Over the course of the years, wine production was shifted to the Tenuta di Pietrapenta, which is about 12 kilometers from the city. Today, the Dragone Winery produces about 10,000 hectoliters of wine a year, only from vineyards owned by the winery itself, and including a number of typical Lucanian varieties.
The main products are fruit, wines, olives, cereals and also the silviculture is important. The farm has a strong propensity to the cultivation of peach and grape-vine. These products have market outlets at local, national and international level.
The farm follows an integrated agriculture and a good agricultural practice in full obedience of the agricultural ecosystem which – together with the technical competences, degree in agrarian sciences with specialization in oenology and with the exceptional pedoclimatic conditions of the Ionic- coast, one of the most beautiful place in Europe- produces products with marked organoleptic features, fruit of the strong shining sun and of the mildness of our winter.
Torre Varano was born in the 1912 with a centenarian experience in the production of grapes that hand down from generation to generation.
Our company is placed on the slopes of the Taburno Mountain, in Torrecuso, in the core of Sannio Beneventano, in a rich area of vegetation where the sun kisses the land form dawn till dusk and the climate is cool in summer and dry in winter.
In 2003 our company starts bottling activity of its jewels, Aglianico and Falanghina.
The project consists in the development of Vineyard Puglia, to say, in the research, winemaking and marketing on an international scale of autochthonous regional vines.
The fixed point which characterizes the company in its activities, is the constant commitment in updating and researching in the industry, to understand the market changes and adapt the characteristics of the production to the tastes of the public without betraying the typicality of wines and especially the peculiarities of the grapes that they characterise.
