The best wineries in Cuneo.
The winery Fiorenzo Nada, the penultimate of seven children, inherits at the end of the 50s a small piece of land on the border with Alba. His family has always produced wine, selling it in bulk to restaurants. When the property is divided among the four male sons, he chooses to vinify only for family and friends and sells grapes from its vineyards, very demanded, to the traders in the area.
His son Bruno, like many young people of the period, decides to leave Treiso and to study before in Turin, then in Asti. He teaches at a school in Alba and at the Hotel Institute of Barolo, where he introduces wine and food as a teaching subject.
The link with Treiso was never completely broken and when he knows some lighted wine producers who speak of terroir, of wines expression of the territory and of low yields per hectare, Bruno proposes to his father not to sell their grapes and to equip the cellar for wine–making on their own. Pruvuma (we try) is the only word of his father. There are not good times, the clash of generations is strong. Bruno gets up early in the morning to go to thin the vines, unbeknownst to his father, and hides the clusters in the ditches. It is 1982 when the family can count on the extraordinary vineyard of Rombone, which gives its name to the place where he was born and the family Nada lives. Today Monica and Danilo help their father with the same passion that inspired him so many years ago.
When, in 1985, Matteo Correggia inherits the family farm from his father, the boom in viticulture is far, and to the left of the Tanaro River fruits and vegetables are grown, next to the vines from which wine for a few close friends is produced.
Matteo is a young farmer fond of the new craft. He works carefully ready to learn and improve in every little thing: a trait that will become characteristic of all his experience. The “Renaissance” of wine, meanwhile, has dawned. Unexpected like a bud on the steak, which yesterday was not there and today explodes. Matteo decided that his project was simple, and for this he would not have given up. The goal? To make, not only to produce, memorable wines. It was not an easy choice. To make in absolute quality, in a land still underestimated because misunderstood, for many people an unrealistic conceit.
He helps himself with a chainsaw, that with granite determination waves like a sword: before, in the orchard, plants are cut, and then, in the cellar, the old large barrels are reduced to firewood, to make way for the new barrels.
His father Giovanni did not understand those drastic decisions and took refuge in silence, because of his son who broke with his whole world and was unworthy of his vineyards, and died in 1985 disinheriting him.
Elio did not give up and has not given up now, decided to change way to give another interpretation to wine, favoring elegance, finesse and balance, following a severe labor in the vineyard, adopting in the winery new techniques of vinification and aging aimed to enhance vine variety and territory, with stubbornness still chasing his dream.
Our small size allows still today an easy management, family–run under the constant supervision of Elio. The company currently consists of approximately 10 hectares and its average annual production is of about 60,000 bottles.
Pecchenino agricultural company was founded at the end of the eighteenth century, has always been family–run, and its estates has been handed down generation after generation.
Documents about it date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the company, run by grandfather Attilio, covered a little more than 8 hectares. Since the 70s, when the company was taken over by Attilio’s son Marino, and after, in 1987, by his sons Orlando and Attilio, new plots of land and vineyards were purchased, forming now a surface of more or less 25 hectares, of which 22 in the Municipality of Dogliani and 3 in the Municipality of Monforte d’Alba. The area of Dogliani is characteristic for the Dolcetto grape variety, whose presence is recorded even in 1432 in a manuscript founded in the municipal archives.
The company is cultived with Dolcetto (70%) and for the rest, with Barbera, Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties. The company, moreover, owns plots of land in the Municipality of Monforte d’Alba, one of the most suited areas for the production of Barolo wine: in the San Giuseppe locality, where the cru “Le Coste” is produced, and in the Bussia locality, where the cru “Bussia Corsini” is going to be produced.
A passion, that for wine, that is indissoluble for the Mossio family. So as the bond to land, to labor, and to these vineyards located in enviable and wonderfully scenic locations. The history of this company began with grandfather Francesco and grandmother Francesca and continues with Luigi and Ennio Mossio with their wives, both named Margherita, and then with their children. Today Valerio and Remo, aided by their nephew Michele, are personally committed to the production of Dolcetto d’Alba, Bricco Caramelli and Piano delli Perdoni. Barbera, Nebbiolo and Langhe Rosso, the results of a happy union between Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Mossio, therefore, is the common work of a family that, with different roles, finds all involved towards one single goal: the quality of wine.
From the vineyards owned, mostly planted in good positions, the winery produces its Dolcetto. Quality has been the goal for several years, but it can be said that the Mossio family have reached also goodness, especially by virtue of contained yields and an increased expertise in the process of winemaking.
Our winery began its production in the 50s under the guidance of Giuseppe Damonte. Guseppe was a dreamer, he loved his country, and understood that Roero had great potential. Today, Malvir is led by the sons of Giuseppe: Massimo and Roberto, who have inherited from their father the same dream and the same passion.
Over time the company has grown and conquered new markets, but its family management remains; Massimo takes care of the vineyards and Roberto of the cellar.
Giacomo, son of Roberto and Patrizia, has completed the Oenology School of Alba and is taking his first steps in the company of the family, while the children of Massimo and Federica: Lucia, Francesco and Pietro, are still in compulsory schooling.
Patrizia, the wife of Roberto, runs the “Villa Tiboldi” farmhouse inn, with nine elegant rooms in the heart of the Trinità vineyard.
Vocation, challenge and passion: these are three essential aspects for Cascina Fonda. Vocation for the territory and the wine-growing since 1963, year in which Secondino Barbero founded the company exploiting his experience in the oenological field.
The challenge was won thanks to his sons Massimo and Marco, who have bottled their wine since 1988; they focused on Moscato and since 1991 they have processed all the produced grapes.
Finally, the passion is for the sweet taste of Moscato, which is produced by the Barbero brothers in the sweet and dry versions Moscato d'Asti and Asti Spumante (since 1991).
This “sweet passion” encouraged Cascina Fonda to focus especially on Moscato, a wine produced on the hills between Mango and Neive, symbol of a land that gives unique fruits.
The Barbero Brothers also produce other wines: Dolcetto, Barbaresco and Brachetto. Their products are marketed in Italy, in the United States, in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and France.
From 1995 to 2000 the new cellar was developed according logistic and modern principles, to support the processing of Moscato, a young and fresh wine.
Massimo and Marco Barbero continue to work to maintain the quality that characterized all the wines produced by Cascina Fonda.
Lorenzo Accomasso has been for many years the president of the Council Winery of La Morra, the favorite place of many wine lovers. The proposed tastings and events that are organized there are of high level, enhancing the territory and its wines. The credit for this goes to Lorenzo and to his employees who run the winery, in which all the producers of La Morra are represented. The wines of Lorenzo, in particular its Barolo, Rocchette and Le Mie Vigne, stand out for their character and great fidelity to tradition. These are wines that tell more than others the passion of a man for his Langhe, hills kissed by Bacchus. In the tasting of this year, Barolo Rocchette 2004 has asserted itself with fierce pride.
The curiosity for the complexity of flavors and aromas moves the work of the Abbona winery in the direction of a constant daily search for new discoveries and more subtle refinements.
The Abbona winery was founded in 1970 and has its roots in the daily winemaking tradition, a passion for flavors and fragrances that are renewed generation after generation, with a cultural heritage that evolves with the best care and dedication.
The support of customers, who sustain the company with their appreciation, induce it at the same time to a progressive commitment of growth and improvement in this challenging but very rewarding activity.
The Dolcetti di Farigliano have always had a special charm, the soil and the air of the area make them unique and unambiguous. The Abbona Schellino family has known it for a long time, and this year they present three products, all of high level and personality, as well as Barbera and grapes blends with Nebbiolo. The company has recently rented some vineyards adjacent to the property aged 70–80 years, which were seriously damaged by the abundant snow in winter. Their recovery has experienced a hard and challenging work of re–arrangement of rods and plants.
Giacomo Conterno founded this winery, Giovanni made it famous in the world and Roberto is carrying out the activity with the same seriousness and passion of his predecessors.
In 1908 Giovanni Conterno founded a tavern in San Giuseppe, near Monforte d’Alba, and between 1912 and 1920 began to produce his first Barolo reserve in both editions.
All the grapes for winemaking come from the vineyard in Cascina Franciaquot located in Serralunga d’Alba (CN) consisting of a single plot of 15 hectares. The main types of grapes grown are Langhe Freisa, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo da Barolo, of which Cascina Francia stands out, and Barolo Reserve Monfortino, aged at least 7 years in large oak barrels.
Wine Spectator describes his Barbera: it appears dark in color, rich in nose, of fruit and floral scents, where hints of raspberry and cherry stand out. In the mouth it is soft and with good balance.

His wines that are aged in large oak barrels for 45 months tell an extraordinary story of quality and prestige.
The Gaja family settled in Piedmont in the mid–seventeenth century. Four generations have succeeded in producing wine since Giovanni Gaja, in 1859, founded the winery, in Barbaresco, in the Langhe.
Angelo, son of Giovanni, is the second generation. He married Clotilde Rey, who is traditionally credited with having given the company the actual production philosophy, oriented towards high–quality wine. The exponent of the third generation was Giovanni Gaja, the son of Clotilde and Angelo Gaja, who died in 2002. Angelo Gaja, the current owner, entered the company in 1961 and made his own choices that were already of his father and his grandfather. He has worked to spread and affirm the knowledge of Barbaresco on foreign markets.
The cellars of Castello di Verduno have a long story to tell ...
It is the history of the Barolo wine. Since 1838, with the acquisition of the Castle by King Carlo Alberto of Savoy, General Staglieno, man of war and expert oenologist, worked, on behalf of the King, to get from the best vineyards cultivated with Nebbiolo grapes a great wine: Barolo del Castello di Verduno.
Since then the castle cellars have never ceased to host noble red wines left to age. The Burlotto family, once become the owner of the castle at the beginning of the twentieth century, has continued the tradition of production of Savoy.
Today Castello di Verduno can boast, thanks to its hectares of property in the hills of Verduno and Barbaresco, the two most precious wine jewels of the Langhe area: Barolo and Barbaresco. This unique and valuable combination of production has became possible thanks to the marriage between Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco, producer of Barbaresco for four generations.
The Montezemolo family owned many estates, among which an ancient palace in the upper part of the city of Mondovì, called Mondovì Piazza, is still belonging to them. The estate, called IL COLOMBO, was built in the eighteenth century and later enlarged. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the high tower in Gothic Revival style was built, and at the end of the same, the gate on the square in front of the palace. The Chapel, which perhaps was originally a small independent church, is currently a construction of the beginning of the nineteenth century, showing on its front a more ancient emblem made of stone that depicts the coat of arms of Montezemolo.
The family of Baron Riccati bought the property from the same in 1989, restoring the home, the victim of a long abandon, reactivating and expanding the vineyard and building a winery to produce a Dolcetto, a wine typical of these hills, now much quoted in the industry press, national or international.
In 2006, its property passed to a married couple of Norwegian origin, named Britt and Theo Holm in Oslo, who continued to use the property while maintaining the character of a holiday home. The few renovations are made with the utmost respect and wine production, as well as the care of the vineyards was entrusted, on the advice of the same Carlo Riccati, to Sabina Bosio and Bruno Chionetti, friends with whom he shared a part of the company’s progress, act to enhance the Dolcetto grape variety, which dominates on this hill, in a landscape that has not changed for three centuries. Sabina, after years spent helping her husband, who is leading an important company in Dogliani, develops a work experience and a remarkable maturity, both at the level of the winery, and in vinification, followed not only by her husband, but also by the oenologist Beppe Caviola, who in the work in the countryside has had excellent teachers, the agronomist Gian Piero Romana first and Massimo Pinna later.
This team provides an excellent final result, in our opinion, that reflects in every way the hills where our wines are created. Hills where there is still biodiversity, that allows us to work in a natural and non–invasive way our vineyards. Not by chance, we are concluding the bureaucratic process for the classification of organic wine, to give the final consumer all the guarantees and the naturalness and genuineness that only an area like ours can give.
The name Borgogno is tied to one of the oldest wineries in Piedmont: it was founded in 1761 with Bartolomeo Borgogno. In 1848 it became the supplier of the College for the sons of the officers of the Racconigi Savoy Army with the first written document on legal paper, still jealously preserved, demonstrating the company’s activity, and that will have a crucial importance in recent history. Since then, the high quality of the products offered, which makes the name Borgogno increasingly known and appreciated. A proof of this is the choice of its Barolo, in 1861, for an official lunch of celebration of the Unity of Italy, and in 1886 for the banquet in honor of Nicholas II Romanov Tsar of all the Russias, host of the Savoy, on an official visit to the Castle of Racconigi.
The 20s
At the beginning of the 20s, under the direction of Cesare Borgogno, the Borgogno wine sales started to expand also beyond national borders; but at the end of the Second World War there was the real development with the acquisition of some of the most important overseas markets, such as Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and, especially, the United States of America, and with a further consolidation of its position in Europe.
From the 50s to today
After the complete renovation of the wineries, which took place between 1954 and 1959, Cesare Borgogno started in 1967 a new program of transformation in the arrangement of the Company, that took the current name of Giacomo Borgnogno & Sons. On the death of Cesare Borgogno, the management passed to his grandchildren Ida and Franco Boschis (and subsequently to their children Cesare and Giorgio), until then their good collaborators. Today, the Giacomo Borgogno & Sons is an evolved company that, thanks to a centuries–old experience, combines tradition and technological innovation in a good relationship, enough to ensure the consistent achievement of a high quality in their products.
In 2008, the Borgogno Giacomo & Sons was acquired by the Farinetti family, that ended in 2009 a noteworthy renovation of the main building.
