The best wineries in Cuneo.
Many are the things to tell about this chateau in Piedmont which in 2008 celebrated its 130 years: the creation of the “bio–natural reservation” of Fontanafredda, with a significant reduction of CO2 emissions by the corporate system; the high quality of its wines: there is not the top, but the sequence of Four Clusters (Quattro Grappoli) awards is impressive. Moreover, we would like to mention also the commitment of Fontanafredda for Asti, a great sparkling wine too often mistreated. The answer is Galarej, produced with the “ancestral method”, ie employing the secondary fermentation of the natural sugars of the grapes, without additions. A processing that is new and old at the same time, between ethics and the market.
Even this year the choice of wines presented by Antonio Deltetto does not disappoint the expectations of supporters of the potential of the Roero area. The company has been operating in Canale for decades, that has always stood out interpreting in the best way the grape varieties in the area. For some years the sparkling wines complement the company’s range, offering fine bubbles. Obviously, our attention goes to the Roero Braja, but Barbera Rocca delle Marasche climbs the podium for its great pleasantness.
Cascina Pellegrino is a wine company rooted in the best Piedmontese traditions, founded by the Bono family and now run by son Cristiano and his partner Roberto Ghione. The Vineyards of property are spread in the municipalities of Canale, Monteu Roearo. S. Stefano Roero and Vezza d’Alba: areas that are highly suited to viticulture. The winery, recently built, completely modern, operational, is divided into three processing zones: vinification, bottling and barriques. The constant pursuit of quality and elegance makes of it a reference point within the Roero winemaking scenery.
Since its debut in the world of wine Cascina Chicco has been a landmark in the Roero area. The magnificent three grape varieties of the area: Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis, have been interpreted with considerable skill and ability. The fruity expression is among the distinctive characteristics of the wines by Marco and Enrico Faccenda. Instant pleasure, in the hope that wine, especially Nebbiolo and Barbera, express in their evolution their maximum potentials. Time and, of course, vintages, have followed one another giving reflection stimuli and new guidelines. All this, keeping the company always on levels of prestige.
Starting from 1974 some wines by Vietti have been dressed with original artworks created on purpose by artists and inspired by the wine of each specific vintage.
The print run matches the number of bottles produced and the first hundred are signed by artists. Each artwork is used only once, exclusively for the wine of a specific vintage. Since 1988, on the occasion of the presentation of Barolo Villero 1982, the Author label has been dedicated to the wine of this great vineyard.
Alfredo Corrado tells: «The idea was conceived around a bottle of Barolo Rocche. A winter evening a group of friends, some of which artists, and I, were tasting some bottles of Barolo. Just seeing the color of the wine in the glass, they were thrilled and said that these wines deserved to be ennobled with different from the usual dresses: what they deserved were Artists’ labels. In the euphoria of that moment we made a list of Artists, and the day after that airy idea took concrete shape».
In the land of Barolo there is a family that has always been associated with wine: the Brovia family. The company was founded in 1863 and is located in Castiglione Falletto. It has always been very careful about the importance of the terroir and has managed, with time, to select and then to buy large vineyards in the Barolo area: Rocche, Villero and Garblèt Suè in Castiglione Falletto and Ca’Mia and Brea in Serralunga d’Alba.
Thus, the philosophy of the Winery is to propose great personality Barolo wines, prodocued an vinified all in the same way, but with very specific and clean characteristics, always different among them. Barolo wines that faithfully reflect the richness of our great Langa vineyards.
After long and challenging works, the new winery in Fontane di La Morra locality have been completed, where the processing related to the 2006 harvest have been accomplished with excellent results.
Enzo Boglietti is a family run company which started to vinify grapes from the vineyards of property, more or less 2.5 hectares, in 1991, to reach gradually the 21 hectares for a total of 75,000 bottles a year.
Enzo devotes himself to the direction and the eclectic management, while his brother Gianni, who has been working with him since 1996, deals with the vineyards’ management, with the indefatigable support of their father Renato.
Ca’ Viola farm was founded in 1991 in Montelupo Albese, a small rural town located in the heart of the Langhe area, on the hills around Alba, a town that has always been considered the main center of Langhe.
In September 2001, the production winery was transferred to Dogliani, famous for having been the village where the statesman Luigi Einaudi lived and worked, and now increasingly known for the production of the excellent Dolcetto DOC that is emerging as one of the best wines ever in the varied landscape of Piedmont.
The new, prestigious seat is located in a villa of the nineteenth century, completely renovated preserving the architectural features of that period and in complete harmony with the environment.
The company owner is Giuseppe Caviola, a well known oenologist appreciated for his activity of consultant at important wineries.
Caviola, who is also responsible for the technical management of the winery, avails himself of the collaboration of his partner Maurizio Anselmo, regarding the vinegrowing activity, and is ssisted by a determined and passionate young man: Alessandro Scarrone.
The viticultural practices are implemented directly by Maurizio and Alessandro, with the aim of a continuous quality improvement, and are planned under the supervision of two agronomists of recognized reputation and expertise: Federico Curtaz and Gian Piero Romana, Beppe’s friends, who collaborate also in other vinegrowing and winemaking realities – not only in Piedmont.
To complete the company’s workforce, Caviola’s wife, Simonetta, who deals with the administration of Ca’ Viola.
Marchesi di Barolo was and is still a Winery which has always been awarded for the excellence of its wines an often mentioned by the national press and media. The production is widespread in the main countries with free market and western life style. The distribution, like every other aspect of the supply chain, is well cared for: customers are selected on the basis of demanding quality requirements. The domestic market accounts for approximately 40% of production and is covered by a network of agents that are very well coordinated and introduced in the traditional food service industry. Export mainly consists of a network of national importers, coordinated by a manager, and structured with its own sales network.
The company is certainly one of the architects of the important tourist flow that has been developed over the last few years. To accommodate the more than 40,000 wine tourists that annually visit Barolo, the Company has created, in the complex of buildings overlying the Historic Wineries, a large and functional reception area: a wine bar with the possibility of wine tasting, also accompanied by the tasting of food specialties, of which the Langhe area is particularly rich and famous for, an inner store where wine lovers can find all that surrounds and enriches the world of wine, accessories, literature, images of the wine–growing region and many useful ideas even for those who, of this passion, have done their job.
On top of Bric Valdiano, historc vineyard of Almodo Company, an ancient casot stands, a building conceived to store the tools used in the vineyard. Observing the walls, you notice that, mixed up with lime, there are many fossils. They testify the ancient presence of the sea, that has left in these vineyards a unique and peculiar sign, giving wines strong mineral sensations. Roero is a land deeply bound to the cultivation of vines, and Domenico Almondo is one of its main interpreters, managing to transform a high quality raw material into distinguished for elegance and determination wines. This year, worth to mention is Reserve Giovanni Almondo of 2006. Excellent are the other wines, characterized by a good value for money.
Gianfranco Alessandria accelerates and speeds up his pace. Even this year he presents a Barolo San Giovanni of excellence and repeats himself with the “5 Grappoli” award of last year. A wine of great texture that sums up in this harvest all the characters of Barolo di Monforte: scents, integrity and energy. But we have not finished yet: of almost the same level is “basic” Barolo, maybe not as good as the previous. The company is still increasing, the full maturity for Gianfranco Alessandria is near, and we are happy of this.
Refined style, precision, elegance. The wines of the Alessandria Winery are distinguished by these features, present in whatever designation. The historic winery is of Verduno, but in the years it has broadened its borders producing also wines outside the municipality. An example, is the case of Barolo Le Gramolere di Monforte, a wine of outstanding personality that this year is at the top of our business choices. The rest is quality, from Barolo di Verduno (San Lorenzo first of all) to Verduno Pelaverga, to which Vittore Alessandria devote much energy. Winery in development. To visit.
The Principiano family, since the beginning of the twentieth century, has been devoted to viticulture and committed in the work on the seven hectares of owned vineyards for generation. The winery was opened in the 50s by Americo Principiano, while in 1993 his son Ferdinando dealt, thanks to the always precious experience of his father in the work in the vineyard, with the vinification, of which in 2004 he redefined philosophy and ideas. A vinification thought to reflect more closely the nature and the characteristics of the territory and in honor of which he has abandoned chemical fertilizers, herbicides, desiccants and anti–mold products, has preferred the use of indigenous yeasts, has proceeded to thinning to obtain yields of grapes from eight hectograms to a maximum of one kilo and a half a plant, has chosen fermentation free from the control of the temperature in the basement to accommodate a more sustainable and in harmony with the environment processing, and has opted for manual pumping.
These are the ingredients of the new wave of Ferdinando Principiano: actions thought and essential for wines that are even more linked to the genetic heritage of Langhe.
Four vineyards belong historically to the winery. First of all, Boscaretto in Serralunga D’Alba, which covers five hectares cultivated entirely with Nebbiolo for Barolo. As well as Le Coste, in Monforte d’Alba, a small vineyard that does not exceed half a hectare but from which a strong and of high quality Nebbiolo is obtained. Barbera d’Alba, instead, is son of the historic Cru of Pian Romualdo, always in Monforte d’Alba, as well as the hectare and a half of the Sant’Anna vineyard from which the Dolcetto d’Alba of the same name is obtained. For the high level production, the ripeness of grapes is essential: the Cru of the Principiano family can boast ages that range from 40 to 60.
