To produce excellent and fine local wines, it is essential to start from an excellent and careful viticulture, and the technique of production, based on the modernity of the facilities, is crucial, too.
Only the intense collaboration of agronomists and oenologists, along with a grape processing with modern technology, can ensure our steady and excellent quality.
To ensure the best conditions, in the year 2002, we have made renovations in our wine cellars. The outdated and antiquated structure, built in the sixties and seventies, has been been demolished, while the historical part has been restored. The new building consists of three rooms, one for winemaking, one for bottling, and one for the storage of bottled wines. Machineries have been replaced with machines of modern technology. We have decided to take this step, also to be even more competitive on the commercial and logistical point of view.
We hope, in this way, to reach the top with our wines, in order to meet the needs of our customers in Italy and abroad.
The winery of the Benedictine monastery remains one of the best in the South Tyrolean production, but does not confirm the excellence of its top red wine, Lagrein Abtei Muri Riserva, this year a little bit below expectations. The quality expressed by all labels remains high, especially the one of red wine, which now represent 85% of the total production of Muri–Gries. The specialization of the convent winery in Lagrein is confirmed, a grape variety that is perfectly at home in the vineyards of Bolzano, rich in porphyry, and in those pebbly of the alluvial area of river Talvera.
The winery has the task to finish the artwork arisen in the vineyards. At the moment of the harvest, every cluster is cut by hand and carefully controlled, to create a selected and flawless raw material. The following phase provides for the conservation and the refinement of these prestigious grapes with delicate processings and innovative production methods, as well as with the experience, the sensitivity and the intuition of an oenologist. The knowledge of the ideal localities for each grape variety, the manual selection made in the vineyard and the aromatic notes given by the vinification in wooden or steel barrels are the essential elements of the philosophy of the Merano Burggrafler Winery.
Our family–run company was founded in 1979 by Gabriel Martini and his father Karl. Both had already been working for several years in the wine industry before deciding to start the adventure of a private company.
To create a winery from out of thin air was a great effort. The first bottles were filled, capped and labeled by hand (we are happy that today machines can do this work in our place).
We are not big landowners, therefore, we are glad that there are many trusted farmers who deliver to us their grapes to produce wine. We and our suppliers are particularly attentive to the quality of the vineyards. In the cellar, then, it is up to us to be able to obtain good wine from valuable grapes.
Our structure at the beginning was very small, therefore, to achieve success, there was no other way but let wines “speak”. Only quality and an impeccable service justify the existence of a family–run company. We want to continue to work in this way, we do not do philosophy. We love to be very practical.
In bygone days, isolated in the middle of the vines north of Bolzano, "Gummerhof" for the first time was reported in the acts of 1480. In 1880 Joseph Trafojer bought this farm and built a new winery with a distillery of grappa.
Until 1925 the wine cellar was run by the son of Joseph Trafojer, then the activity was suspended and only at the end of the 40s was resumed by his son Rudolf Malojer. The facilities were totally renovated and the winery was suited to the current needs: to the old oak barrels, steel containers were added, and modern technology facilities were installed. Soon, grapes was purchased from other farmers, also to expand the range of varieties. The "Gummerhof–Malojer" winery is run by the family in the name of many years of experience, and using the most modern knowledge in wine cultivation, in order to offer wines of high quality.
The wines of the Sandbichler line always distinguish themselves within the excellent production of the historic wine cellar of Egna. This line represents the pinnacle of quality business and is derived from grapes grown under strict selection procedures already in the vineyard. Above all, the refined sweetness of Passito 2007 stands out, a Moscato Giallo completed by light "brushstrokes" of Sauvignon and Riesling, capable of expressing great charm and territoriality. Always very good is Lagrein Riserva, while a little less convincing than last year, mainly due to lower depth of character, are Gewürztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon, which in any case guarantee the usual finesse and pleasantness to drink.
Loacker has been cultivating and leading for more than thirty years its wine farms following the principles of biodynamic and homeopathy. For this reason, in the vines of the Loacker estates the use of chemistry is eliminated, using for the treatment of vines exclusively homeopathic and biodynamic preparations, as for example Arnica or Aconitum.
Loacker produces local products such as Santa Maddalena, Gewürztraminer and Lagrein, as well as wines from international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Loacker family has, beyond vineyards in South Tyrol, also two wineries in Tuscany (Montalcino and Maremma) and so the wines produced are spanning a wide range, so that you can win every palate.
Alois Lageder is synonim with excellent quality in the organic–biodynamic winemaking activity, but also with a business philosophy inspired to a holistic and sustainable approach, and to the central role of the many artistic and cultural activities. Founded in 1823 and now in its fifth generation with the current owner: Alois Lageder, the company stands out for its ability to blend tradition and innovation. Its wines are divided into the two lines Tenut Lageder and Alois Lageder.
A small but very solid production reality that has always distinguished itself for the passion and care with which it tries to propose small cross sections of the territory interpreted by labels of fine typicality. We are in the plain of Cortina on the Wine Road, one of the smallest municipalities of South Tyrol, characterized by a soil composed of limestone and dolomite debris and moraine deposits of gravel, sand and clay. Only three are the wines that Peter Zemmer presented to us this year: once again, the fine Lagrein Intenditore stands out, the real pride of the winery, from grapes grown on clay soils in the municipality of Ora.
Since 1923, Cantina Girlan has its seat in this typical of the Oltradige area farmhouse.
On the background of these walls, where tradition can be still breathed in each corner and in the plot of corridors and clefts of the cellar, the secrets of a cutting–edge winemaking technology are hidden.
In 2010 a process of modernization of the winery started, with the aim of putting up with the technical demands of today. A new station of grapes acceptance, a new local press and a new fermentation cellar were put into operation shortly before the 2010 harvest. With the 2010 vintage, grapes immediately started to be processed, in a caring and gentle way, made possible by the force of gravity and the waiver of mechanical handling equipment. The warehouse for the storage of bottled wine has been expanded, too, so as to be able to provide our customers ready–to–drink wines at their output.
In the underground wine cellar full of barriques, the South Tyrol artist Robert Scherer, paintbrush and palette in hand, tells his stories in a series of figurative images. The symbolism and the choice of colors lead us through a world suspended between mythical and biblical facts, history and modernity. The artwork was created to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the “Erste + Neue”.
Eleven different municipalities of the Eisack Valley, suited vineyards located between 400 and 900 meters above sea level with high temperature ranges, a production of almost exclusively of white wines. The most important are the labels of the Aristos line that, honoring their name, have expressed in years a very high quality across the entire production, of South Tyrol and beyond. Apart from the sumptuous Kerner, near to the final, very well made are the full of character Veltliner and the varietal Sauvignon.
All the white wines of the winery come from HFL unterm Stein, a hill facing south–east between 480 and 550 meters above sea level consisting of limestone–clay soils and located in Sella, a village of Termeno, known for its particular vocation to Gewürztraminer. This year we will not have Eiswein, unfortunately, but we can document the successful debut of Exilissi Sell, a late vintage of Gewürztraminer with as well as 140 g/l of residual sugar, which is near to the brilliant results obtained last year from the "icy" version.
The spectacular amphitheater of vineyards lying in range of more than 200 degrees at the foot of Mount Gantkofel this year gives us an interesting line of labels, largely the result of a great company restyling. On 1st September 2008, in effect, the company was incorporated by the Terlano Winery, which has immediately transmitted even to this historic reality its philosophy of quality manufacturing: reduction in yield of 20%, refinement of packaging, halving of the range of wines, reduced to the two most required lines of quality. Given the different conditions of soil and climate, the products of the two wineries will continue to be vinified and marketed separately also in the future.
Glgglhof is a family–run agrictultural company, located in the heart of the St. Magdalener Classico traditional production area, just at the foot of the ancient little church of St. Mary Magdalene. The original farm of the fourteenth century has been owned by the family for about 180 years. Three different generations have taken care of the farm and vineyard in the latest century: firstly, grandmother Anna Wenter, as a grape harvester, and grandfather Florian Rabanser, as a cellarman, then Marianne Rabanser, who inherited the farm and in 1949 married Anton Gojer. The third generation is represented by Franz Gojer: he, since 1983, ownes the farm. The traditional destination of the farm has always been the cultivation of vines – Schiava on the Glgglhgel hill and Lagrein in the Eisack plain – and the production of wine. This latter, was exported in barrels to Switzerland until the fine of 70s. The passage to Franz Gojer, in 1983, coincided more or less with the collapse of the St. Magdalene wine market in Switzerland: therefore, he started bottling the production directly in the farm and to distribute it on his own. The farm was expanded in time of about 1.8 hectares, to meet constantly the growing demand coming from the food and wine industry and from private customers.
In 1996, 5000 m2 of apple orchards owned by the family, located south of Bolzano in the area of confluence between the rivers Adige and Isarco, were destined to the production of Merlot grapes.
Since 1991, Bruno Pilzer has been distilling in the Val di Cembra a vinasse brandy of St. Magdalener, that achieves in the bottle levels of excellence.
