Azienda Agricola Toblino has a very large platform of vine varieties with all the varieties of Trentino. Our plots are also the testing ground for novelties and demonstration field for the winegrowers in the area.
In the Hofstatter Estate the most well–known grape varieties in South Tyrol are grown. They have the undeniable privilege to name the vineyards placed on both sides of the river Adige.
It is exactly the work in the vineyards that leads continuously the producer to new challenges: decades of monoculture have exhausted the land, have deprived it of life, that life needed by vines to stay healthy and develop all their strength. And what they need is strength, today more than ever, for the alternation of extreme weather conditions.
Lately the word terroir is used as a slogan, as if it were a fixed concept, but that is actually subjected to changes which winemakers must take into account well in advance in their work between the vine rows. They have to understand, respect and harmonize all the elementary preconditions for the growth of a vine of excellence, unique and full of character.
Only in this way, even better grapes can be obtained from a vineyard that has already been producing good grapes for a long time.
Hofstatter is already working, without knowing the details first, on how we can better face the ecological challenges at the global level starting from a small living reality such as a vineyard.
The farmstead – Simon Mayr, Küchenmayr, in Fià dello Sciliar, in the year 1629 acquired the Unterganzner farmstead, in which the Mayr family has lived and worked for as many as 10 generations. The property has experienced direct succession from father to son. Only with the knowledge gained over decades of work and thanks to experience, joint effort and cooperation of all the generations that have lived in the farmstead, it was possible to get the high quality that distinguishes the wine produced there.
Location – At the eastern end of the wide basin of Bolzano, 285 meters above sea level, built on the porphyry rocks typical of the area, at the point where River Ega flows into the raging waters of Eisack, the Mayr–Unterganzner farmstead is located.
The vineyard – the Unterganzner farmstead, in spite of the most modern technical developments, conducts with perseverance the traditional "arbor vinegrowing". This system of cultivation, however, is modified so that, with a high number of plants per hectare and a limitation of the targeted yields, a high level of quality of the grapes is guaranteed.
The "Tatzelwurm", the dragon as a brand and a promise of quality –
The Unterganzner farmstead is part of the "Südtiroler Qualitätsweinhfe" association of vinegrowers, a group of ambitious winemakers who share ideas and views with regard to the "promise of quality" a goal that is pursued with a maximum consistency and transparency, from the vine to the bottled product.
In Velturno, a little bit over Chiusa, Azienda Vinicola Garlider is located, enjoying a charming view on the Eisack Valley and on the imposing Alpine world. Here, Christian Kerschbaumer runs with his parents, his wife Veronika and their children Anna, Elisa, Philipp and Manuela, the Garlider wine company, producing on a surface of 4 hectares, 5 excellent white wines in addition to the only Pinot Black of the entire Eisack Valley: Grüner Veltliner, Sylvaner, Rulnder (Pinot Grey), Müller Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Blauburgunder.
There are many wonderful things in South Tyrol: countless Castles, testimonies of a past of land border contention, fascinating lakes such as that of Carezza, the slopes of the most extensive ski area in Europe (1200 km divided into 12 areas), protected parks, the millenary larches of Val d’Ultimo, the famous Botanical Gardens in Merano, the Museum of "Ötzi" (the man of 5,300 years was founded in the ice of the Dolomites), the green meadows, the deep valleys, the high mountains that change color depending on the light of the sun, all things that create a spectacle of a hard to beat beauty.
In this enchanting environment, in Mara Locality – Bressanone (Brixen) in the province of Bolzano, there is an old farm (from the Latin word "mansio" house, an old farm, self–sufficient, of buildings and land), of the twelfth century, "Kuenhof", that initially belonged to the Bishop of Brixen, and for 200 years has been owned by the Pliger Family: here, wine has been produced for a long time.
In more recent years and with accuracy, up to 1989 all wine produced was given to the Abbey of Neustift (the historic Abbey of the Regular Canons of St. Augustine, where wine has been produced for more than 800 years), the turning point was 1990, with the first bottling of 1500 bottles on their own. Hence the decision, in 1991, to restore and rehabilitate the old farm, and at the same time to adapt the old wine cellar of modern needs, for a more adequate production. The Company has 8 hectares, 6 of which with vines, the soils are composed of sandy clay with a large amount of shale (a term applied to different types of metamorphic rocks, ie, resulting from the transformation of pre–existing rocks subjected to strong variations in temperature and/or pressure, in which the predominant mineral crystals are aligned in parallel layers, and break with ease). Vineyards, all or almost all, are in small terraces contained by high and thick dry stone walls, at quite high altitude, located to the south–east, from 550 to 700 meters above sea level. 8,000 plants per hectare are machined all by hand, in a natural way without using synthetic products, with a yield that does not exceed 80 quintals per hectare. Wine is made with wisdom and meticulousness, scrupulously aided by steel and great acacia barrels. The result is amazing: 25,000 bottles for four extraordinary white wines, the most important is Sylvaner, followed by Rhenish Riesling, Veltliner (Gruner Veltliner) and Gewürztraminer, Riesling is bottled under the name of "Kaiton", an old Celtic name of the area where the farm is located. The wines have bright colors andare beautiful, fragrant, rich in many flavors, enveloping and persistent, despite having from 13.5% to 15% of alcohol content, you drink with great taste and satisfaction, all have a great capacity for aging. Bottles, with elegant labels, have an efficient and sophisticated locking system with screw cap (this type of closure was chosen both for its beauty and for aesthetic modernity, but especially for an optimal aging of the wine).
Young and rich in perspectives for the future, but with deep roots in tradition: in this way Cantina Bolzano presents itself, founded in 2001 by the union of two historical wineries, Gries (founded in 1908) and Santa Maddalena (founded in 1930). Thanks to the high quality of grapes conferred by its 200 associates, the wines of Cantina Bolzano are positioned at the top pf the wine production of South Tyrol, as testified by the many recognitions at national and international level. The impressive artifact at the beginning of the Wine Route is a landmark, a witness to the livley history of Cantina Vinicola San Michele Appiano. Built in 1909, the central body in Art Nouveau style is still today expression and pride of the farmers of Appiano who wanted to give their wine a suitable framework. The next extension of the original building symbolizes the orientation to the future: its simple style and its clean lines are an expression of the determination of the open mind of the Oltradige winegrowers.
The owner, Reinhold Messner, and the tenants Gisela & Martin Aurich started building the farm in 1992. The union of ideas and pragmatism led to the creation of a small but unique company whose wines and spirits are expression of the unique character of the Juval hill. On a surface of more than five hectares different varieties of grapes and fruits for the distillery are grown.
The Abbey of Neustift is situated in the most northern wine region in South Tyrol. The altitude (600m, 900m), the cool climate and the soil rich in minerals are ideal for an optimal development of aromas and flavors of the typical white wines of the Eisack Valley such as Sylvaner, Müller Thurgau, Kerner, and Gewürztraminer and Veltliner.
The varieties of red wines, instead, thrive in the vineyards of the Abbey located more to the south of South Tyrol; in this case, Lagrein of the Mariaheim farm of the Bolzano area, Kalterersee, Pinot Noir and Moscato Rosa are vinified and aged in the Marklhof estate di Cornaiano/Appiano.
The centuries–old experience of the Abbey has been producing wine since 1142. Combined with the most modern technologies, the great passion of our employees for wine and their professionalism, it gives the wines of the Abbey that personality and liveliness that has always distinguished them.
The "Strasserhof" farmstead over Neustift is surrounded by vineyards and offers a wonderful view on the Brixen basin. Even the welcoming "stube" paneled in wood is a real delight for your eyes. Here and outdoors, under the nut–tree, guests can spend very pleasant hours. In addition, the "Strasserhof" farmstead offers farm holidays, too.
Over Bolzano, in the classic area of Santa Maddalena, the historic Waldgries Estate is located. The estate of the family
extends on a sunny slope, nestled among vines. In this wonderful estate that dates back to the twelfth century and that was originally owned by a convent, the vinification of grapes has a 700–year–long tradition.
Kettmeir is one of the most important names in the long winemaking tradition of South Tyrol, both in the hilly area around Lake Caldaro and in other suited terroirs, where specific types of soils and the alternating influences of the Mediterranean and Alpine climates – with ample temperature ranges both between night and day and among seasons – give wines a unique character.
The historical seat, the vineyards, the wineries on the famous Wine Route, testify a very ancient farm culture and a long winemaking tradition, together with a concept of production oriented to quality, with a wide offer of wines: red, white and rosè, both still and sparkling, whose grapes have found here their ideal habitat. Since 1986 Kettmeir belongs to the Santa Margherita group, that thanks to its network deals with distribution and supply, especially to high level restaurants.
A small winery managed by the Kerschbaumer family, Koefererhof began to bottle on its own only in 1995. Previously, grapes were sold to the surrounding wineries. The more or less 5 hectares of vineyards are located in a wonderful location 700 meters above sea level; the plant density of 7,000 logs per hectare shows clearly that the company is oriented towards high quality production. Beyond Pinot Gris, they cultivate Kerner, Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Müller–Thurgau and Riesling.
The sensitivity of Peter Wachtler for the quality of a wine comes from his passion and his continuous dealing with experts all over Europe.
The harvest of the grapes, fruits of the highest quality, must be carried out only at completed physiological maturity, keeping intact, in this way, the quality and typicality of extremes cultivation sites.
The method of fining gives wines their special armony and their long–lasting feature: 60% of grapes goes in acacia barrels, 40% in stainless steel tanks.
Until late spring the young wines are fermented with selected yeasts and can be drunk only in late summer.
Thanks to its fussy controls Wachtler manages to keep the potential of the minerals present in the soil, thus producing an unmistakably fruity wine, a wine for connoisseurs.
The tradition of Terlano, as a land of vine cultivation, dates back more than 2000 years ago. The mild climate accompanies the maturation of grapes giving them a distinctive flavor. Key to the development of the vines is the position of Terlano, situated on the slopes of Mount Tschggel, on an ideal soil: the porphyry stores heat, and the porous sandstone allows water to flow into the ground, keeping the soil in contact with the roots dry. Today, Cantina Terlan, founded in 1893, has more than 100 members, who, driven by a Cuvée rich in tradition and innovation, produce high quality grapes. The fruits of this accurate and natural cultivation are vinified with care and insightfulness in modern wineries.
