Val D’Orcia is located up high between two mountains like a big bowl of blue clay; beyond the lands, the mountains descend quickly to the sea or in the deep valleys of the interior.
The air twirls with temperatures that are more harsh than all those of the rest of Central Italy, the rains fall out the edges of the "bowl" and the weather turns around.
It is an advantage to make wine in the strangeness of the climate because vines behave in a distorted manner and wines are amazing.
Those arriving in a desert and virgin place like Val D’Orcia, finds powerful images that come out from nameless forces.
A vinegrower can woo these pictures for years without ever understand them at all, but in the meantime he transmits a unique style to his wines.
Badia a Coltibuono or the abbey of the good harvest, was founded by the monks of Vallombrosa about a thousand years ago, as a place of worship and meditation. In 1051, the monks of the Vallombrosa order began to build the monastery of the Good Harvest planting at the same time the first vines in this area.
In the fifteenth century Coltibuono experienced a further development under the patronage of Lorenzo de’ Medici. In 1810, under the Napoleonic rule, the monks were forced to leave Coltibuono. In the following years, the property was first sold through a lottery, and in 1846 and was bought by Michele Giuntini, Florentine banker and ancestor of the present owners.
Under the guidance of Piero Stucchi Prinetti, the farm was transformed into a company establishing itself in Italy and abroad. Today, his children Emanuela, Paolo and Guido continue the work undertaken by their ancestors more than a century ago.
Montevertine is located in the heart of the Chianti hills, in the Municipality of Radda in Chianti, 425 m of altitude.
The locality was, for sure, peopled since the eleventh century. There are still traces of the original construction, for defense, of course, lately transfromed into a farmhouse.
Montevertine was purchased in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, steel manufacturer, as holiday home. He restored the house to make it habitable. Soon, two hectares of vineyard were planted and a small winery was set up, with the idea to produce some wine for friends and customers.
The first vintage produced, the one of 1971, was quite good, ad Sergio Manetti had the idea to send some bottles to Vinitaly in Verona through the Chamber of Commerce of Siena. It was immediately a success and that enthused Mr. Manetti so much that, after a few years, left his primary activity to devote himself only to wine. New vineyards were planted, new wineries were built, and this without any interruption, with a business development that is still ongoing.
The farm, after the departure of Sergio Manetti that took place in November 2000, is now run by his son Martino Manetti with the collaboration of Bruno Bini, born in Montevertine and with deep knowledge of the area and the soils. Giulio Gambelli, master taster, offers his advice and assistance in the preparation of wines.
Located in one of the areas of noblest winemaking vocation, Azienda Montepeloso, founded in 1999, owns 7 hectares of vineyards planted with vines and produces great wines, that have already obtained some prestigious recognitions.
The Querciabella farm was founded in the far 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. We are in the heart of Chianti, all here is done in harmony with nature. For some years they are proceeding with the conversion to bio–dynamic cultivation, and for the winery only certified French wood barrels were purchased (for each keg the replanting of various oaks is planned). The rows, kissed by the sun, thanks to a wonderful southern exposure, arrive even to 490 meters above sea level, which gives great complexity and aromas to the wines.
The wines of Querciabella are very rich and full–bodied, but more elegant than powerful. Of course, given the location of the estate, it is the prince among the rows of Sangiovese, in some cases accompanied by local grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but always respecting the terroir. This use of international varieties is given by the great love of Pepito Castiglioni for France. A feeling of admiration which, of course, also Sebastiano has, and that led him to maintain the very high quality of the wines produced by Querciabella.
The San Giuseppe Farm is composed of more or less 15 hectares of woods, olive groves of 1920 and vines (about 6 hectares).
Each of the six vineyards can be considered a small Cru with its own personality and its own character: which is then harvested and vinified separately and individually deposited in one or more tanks. Therefore, vines are treated with attention, to preserve the ecosystem that surrounds the vineyards and the Company. The results are healthy, strong and tasty grapes, expressions of each vintage, which give different wines over the years, closely related to our land.
Our company is certified ORGANIC (BIO) since 1996 and has been applying biodynamic methods since 2002.
The origin of the "Le Chiuse" company is very old. It was part of the estate of the Biondi Santi family: it was brought as a dowry in the late eighteenth century by Maria Tamanti when she married Clemente Santi. Her daughter Caterina married Jacopo Biondi and their son Ferruccio, great–grandfather of Simonetta Valiani, respecting the wishes of her mother, added the "Santi" mother surname to his. It was him who, after having fought alongside Garibaldi, continued the work of his grandfather Clemente valuing and selecting the grapes to reach this particular clone of Sangiovese (Grosso).
Col di Lamo is a wine company that extends for 80 hectares in the territory of Montalcino, of which a part is cultived with vineyards and Brunello. Col di Lamo produces three wines: Lamo, Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, and a Brandy made with the wine must. The owner, Giovanna Neri, takes care personally of the gradual growth of the wines produces in her company.
The farm, which now comprises 47 hectares of Greppo and 105 of the Pieri, has a cultivated area of specialized vineyards of Sangiovese Grosso of 25 hectares, of which about 5 of older plants (from 1930 to 1972) and 8 hectares of old plants (1988/89) and 6 hectares of recently planted vines (2000/2001) and 6 hectares of very recent plants (from 2004 to 2006).
Too fertile soils are rejected, preferring the marly and rich in texture ones, with exposure to the South, Southeast, East, Northeast and North. The remaining land is cultivated with olive groves, arable land and forests.
The plantation of the very old vineyards is m. 3 x 1.50, to say, 2,222 vines per hectare: that of vineyards planted at the end of the 80s of m. 2.60 x 1.30 x 2 vines for each location, or 5,900 vines per hectare, from the 90s onwards the plantation system has been m. 2.60 x 85, and this means 4,500 vines per hectare.
The system of cultivation is espalier with a horizontal spurred cordon, 25/35,000 buds per hectare. The cultivation of the vineyard are carried out with great care by a highly skilled workforce.
The two most important are: the thinning of the grapes prior to coloring and manual selection of grapes at harvest, devoting to the production of Brunello di Montalcino only the best.
Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 purchasing the Adua farmhouse, dating back to the early twentieth century, the period of the reclamation of Maremma. Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist of Maremma origins, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, began to produce Morellino di Scansano from the approximately 6 hectares of old and valuable vineyards, to which, later, new facilities of modern design and a new winery were added. Today, the company currently consists of two farmhouses, typical Maremma farms, located in two different areas of the Maremma of Grosseto. The Adua farmhouse, with the business center and the wineries, is in close proximity of the Natural Park of Maremma, along the coastal area of the town of Grosseto, while the Keeling farmhouse is located in the hilly area to the north of the town of Scansano, on the slope overlooking the Amiata mountain.
The company, though newly formed, has already received considerable acclaim from the Italian and international press (6quot;Tre Bicchieri" by Gambero Rosso, "Vini dell’Eccellenza" by L’Espresso).
When Giorgio Bianchi, in 1974, sold his house in Milan, left his secure job and moved to Val delle Corti, the farm had been abandoned for years. The fields were overgrown with brambles, the dry stone walls of the terraces had collapsed, olive trees had grown wild. His was a risky bet, at a time when going to live in the country was not yet a trend and the future of Chianti Classico was extremely uncertain.
During long years of passionate work, aided by the invaluable advice of the neighbors – farmers for generations – and supported by his indefatigable wife Eli, Giorgio managed to learn the difficult art of viticulture and to revive Val delle Corti, making of it a small farming model. At the passing of George, which took place early in 1999, the company was handed down to his son Roberto and his wife Lis. Today, the four hectares of vineyards – recently re–planted with Sangiovese and other native red grape varieties – are producing Chianti Classico and a Reserve with great typicality, character and finesse. Wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels in the small but modern winery, while from the two hectares of specialized olive groves, a highly pure extra virgin olive oil with a very low acidity comes. Val delle Corti also produces a small amount of Vin Santo, the traditional dessert wine, and Grappa of Chianti Classico.
Val delle Corti is also hospitality: the "Capanna", the old stone barn recently renovated, welcomes every year visitors from all over the world who wish to regenerate themselves in the beautiful Chianti hills and to discover the pleasure of genuine and high quality products.
The fascination of Lamole is nourished by the charm of colors, from the pale purple of irises in early May, joining the yellow of brooms in late spring, to the bright green of vines, the silver of olive trees, to the darker colors of the forest and so on, up the yellow and red ripening grapes, that agree in October in a kind of symphony of colors.
But Lamole is the cradle of the viticulture of Chianti. Lamole has had, for centuries, the reputation of fine wine. Lamole was, and still is, synonymous with fine wine, full of enticing aromas.
The Le Ragnaie Farm covers an area of 28 hectares in the municipality of Montalcino, in the province of Siena.
Our lands are cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, following the dictates of Organic Farming, and are located in three separate areas of the district of Montalcino, allowing grapes to make wine from three different terroirs:
– 1. Le Regnaie, in the central area of Montalcino, the most elevated vineyards in the district;
– 2. Petroso, along the road of Scarnacuoia close to the town of Montalcino, one of the eldest wine–producing areas;
– 3. Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south east part of the district, in front of the Monte Amiata.
The company is owned by Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti who, along with their collaborators, carefully follow each step of the process, to create products of the highest quality in compliance with the territory.
