The best wineries in Toscana.
After leaving mines, a significant resource of the island, the people of Elba returned to take care of viticulture planting and training beautiful vineyards overlooking the sea. Acquabona, among the most active companies of Elba, boasts the largest extension of vines and a very rich range of products. The best, this year, is the diverse and distinct Voltraio, which is inspired by the precious Bordeaux blends the coast of the Etruscans, a step ahead of the Reserve, a blend characterized by a significant proportion of Sangiovese.
Fattoria Ambra has been belonging to the Romei Rigoli family since the middle of latest century. The company is near the river Ombrone and the Villa Medici in Poggio a Caiano.
In effect, its name derives from the poem "Ambra", written in the fifteenth century by Lorenzo Il Magnifico.
The vineyards, in total 20 hectares, are located in four of the most renowned crus of the territory of Carmignano: the hill of Montalbiolo, Elzana, Santa Cristina in Pilli and Montefortini, along with the Etruscan tombs of the same name.
The Carmignano DOCG, made from the Sangiovese grapes, in the majority, Cabernet, Canaiolo and other red grapes, is bottled in the four crus.
They also produce the younger version of Carmignano, "Barco Reale" and the rosé "Vin Ruspo". Cabernet Sauvignon, which was introduced by the Medici and known as "uva francesca", has been grown in Carmignano since the eighteenth century. In Italy the name of Carmignano had been synonymous with great wines since the thirteenth century, and its reputation was so great that Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, in 1716 issued a notice that dictated the rules for the monitoring of the production of "Carmignano".
Thus, it was the first wine with designation of controlled origin of the world. The boundaries of the ancient designation remain identical to the current ones, making it one of the smallest Italian DOCG zones.
The Panizzi brand was founded in 1989 and has become, over the years, one of the brands of excellence of Italian wine. Panizzi’s Vernaccia di San Gimignano is appreciated all over the world and reviewed steadily as one of the best ever by all the Italian wine guides.
Next to Vernaccia, Panizzi offers a wide range of excellent Tuscan red wines, such as Chianti dei Colli Senesi Vertunno Reserve, San Gimignano DOC Rosso Folgore, San Gimignano DOC Cabernet Sauvignon Rubente and other different IGT wines. Since 2008 the company, as a result of the purchase of a firm in Castelnuovo dell’Abate Montalcino, also produces Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG (available from 2013).
Mormoraia extends over 100 hectares in total, of which 30 are planted with vineyards and 10 with olive groves; nestled in the heart of Tuscany, on the hills of San Gimignano, in a panoramic position of rare beauty.
The cultivation of vineyards and olive groves, supervised by Giuseppe Passoni, owner of Mormoraia, is held with the utmost respect for the land and the environment.
The tasting takes place in the wine bar of the Farmhouse on the enchanting terrace overlooking the vineyards and the olive groves in the wonderful frame of the towers of San Gimignano.
The production is spread through the most modern winemaking techniques, including computerized temperature control during fermentation of the grape must.
The barrels and the French oak barriques used in the aging process allow the achievement of high levels of quality in the Mormoraia wines, appreciated all over the world and featured in the most prestigious gastronomic guides.
Montenidoli, the mount of the small nests:
Land of the Triassic in altitude, the oldest of Tuscany, precious for its minerals for red wines;
Land of the Quaternary on the slopes, where the calcareous sediment, left by the Ligurian Sea, supply and make fragrant white wines.
The Etruscans were the first to discover this treasure and planted vineyards, then the Romans and then the Templar Knights came; we arrived in 1965 to stoop to this land and to question it: we continue to discover its wealth.
It is a land devoted to vine and olive: for 41 years we have awakened old abandoned vineyards and olive trees covered in brambles.

The Cesani family has been running for more than 50 years a farm known for the quality of its wines, its oilve oil and its saffron.
The company covers an area of 19 hectares and has an average altitude of 300 meters above sea level, and cultivates mostly native vineyards such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Sangiovese.
Azienda Agricola Cappella Sant’Andrea was founded thanks to the passion and entrepreneurial skills of Giovanni Leoncini who, along with his father Renato, bought in the fifties the sharecropping farm where now the company stands, extending for approximately thirty hectares, a kilometer far from the picturesque medieval town of San Gimignano. In the nineties, together with his daughter Antonella, Giovanni decided to build a new winery and to increase productivity by purchasing land and creating new vineyards. These were the years in which the company’s most important wines, San Gimignano Rosso DOC Serreto and Vernaccia Rialto Selection were produced, created by Giovanni and by the oenologist Paolo Salvi with the collaboration of Giulio Gambelli. Today Flavia and Francesco are the fourth generation of this family of passionate winemakers.
After a business trip in the Siena Lands, my parents, in 1983, decided to sell our vineyards in Trentino and to buy a small farm in San Gimignano, a place that had attracted them. I was only 11 years old when we moved and I grew up here and, after several experiences, I decided to undertake this long journey, starting to produce quality grapes in the vineyard, while I was doing my first experiences in the winery. In 1996, after some visits, I would say, eye opening, in various wineries in Italy and abroad, I began to bottle my wines. In 1997 I began the marketing of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Chianti Colli Senesi and Cruter. Today, after the modernization of the winery, the purchase of new land and the restructuring of the vineyards, the company covers an area of 35 hectares of which 20 hectares of vineyard. The tradition, the passion, the desire to improve and learn day after day, they brought me here. Today the company produces about 150,000 bottles divided into 10 types. Various awards were received by the Italian and foreign press. Our products are marketed in Italy and exported to America, Europe and Asia.
The farm is dominated by the historic abbey built in 1340 by the Olivetan Benedictine Monks. Its soils of marine origin, composed of yellow sands and clays, and the continental climate, create the ideal conditions for the cultivation of grapes and olives. The estate produces, in the 18 hectares of vineyards, one of the oldest and most prestigious wines in Italy: Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
Obtained from a noble vineyard already celebrated at the time of Dante Alighieri, Vernaccia was the first Italian wine to obtain already in the year 1966 the DOC, which became later Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin in 1993. From the farm, located in an charming location, you can enjoy the spectacular view of the nearby town of San Gimignano with its a hundred towers.
In a scenario typical of the Tuscan countryside, surrounded by pine and cypress trees, Fattoria del Teso covers an area of about 70 hectares. The main building of the farm, with its original roof, false ceilings and the clock with the bell that marks the rhythm of the hours, is home to the wine cellar for the storage in the basement; of offices, warehouse, bottling and refrigeration rooms on the ground floor; of wattles for the drying of grapes on the first floor and kegs for the aging of Vin Santo on the second floor and the attic. In front of this structure there are the vinification plants made of vitrified cement vats and stainless steel tanks. Located in the territory of the farm, you find country houses, many of them centuries old, which give the name to their respective farms: Vannelli, Martinozzi, Starzeno, le Viottole, Le Fontane.
La Poderina is located in Montalcino in the area of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, an area known for its elegance and the balance of its grapes. With a corporate philosophy that believes in innovation in the service of tradition, the wines of La Poderina undergo maturation in French oak barrels as well as in large barrels. In the vineyard, highly qualitative farming systems are employed, with yields of 60 quintals per hectare are adopted, well below the 80 tons allowed by the specification. Brunello is produced in two versions: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and the election Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Banale DOCG. La Poderina also produces: Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Virgùlto Rosso di Toscana IGT, Grappa di Brunello, Moscadello di Montalcino DOC.
The Castle of Poppiano was a mighty medieval building with a triple ring of walls built around the year 1000 as a fortress to defend the outside part of Florence, and, as was pointed out by an act of inheritance of 1199, has been belonging to the Guicciardini family for at least nine centuries.
In this long period it has been the center of various events related to the history of Florence: so, for example, in 1369 Giovanni Acuto (John Hawkwood, the famous English Warlord), after the battle of Fosso Armonico, near Cascina, camped in the Castle of Poppiano. The castle was partially destroyed in 1529 during the siege of Florence, as Francesco Guicciardini recalled in his Memoirs. The Castle, as it is today, while maintaining its ancient grandeur, is the result of a restoration based on existing images in frescoes in other villas of the Guicciardini family in Val di Pesa and in Val d’Elsa, following the damage caused by an earthquake in 1812.
The Guicciardini family, since the thirteenth century had a prominent position in the political, social and economic life of Florence and in 1416 Piero G. was appointed "Conte Palatino" by Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg. They actively participated in the public life of Florence where they provided 44 "priors", 16 "gonfaloniers of justice" and 12 senators.
The pre–eminent personality of the family was Francesco, the Historian (1483-1540) who, after covering important positions with the Medici family – ambassador in Spain, Governor of Modena and Reggio, head of the League of Cognac – retired in Florence and in Poppiano, where he wrote his most important work, the "Historia d’Italia".
Castello del Trebbio, built in 1184, is now home of the namesake farm owned by the Baj Macario family since 1968. The estate is fully managed by the family, offering not only quality products (wine, extra virgin olive oil, saffron), but also various activities such as farm tourism, wine tourism (visits of the castle’s wine cellars with wine and olive oil tasting) and organization of weddings for Italians and foreigners.
Thanks to our restaurant: La Sosta del Gusto, which opened in 2006, that recently won the international Great Wine Capitals award, we are able to offer a complete service to couples who decide to get marrid by us: accommodation, ceremony in the castle, wedding reception at the restaurant adjacent to the castle.

Casa Vinicola Melini is located in Gaggiano, 300 km above sea level in the Hills of Chianti Classico along the road that from Poggibonsi leads to Castellina. Melini has a long tradition that goes back to the year of the foundation, 1705, based on the enhancement and characterization of Chianti Classico.
Its story is the story of Chianti and the first efforts to establish it on the international market. Today the Melini company has 524 hectares in the classic area of Chianti, between Siena and Florence, including farms of famous names such as Selvanella, Terrarossa, Granaio. The main winery, for vinification and maturation of Chianti and other great Tuscan wines, is located in Gaggiano. Moreover, there is a winery in San Gimignano, for vinification and fining of Vernaccia.
