The best wineries in Piemonte.
Francesco Scrimaglio, at the beginning of the twentieth century, began his business as a winegrower, expanded in the 20s by his son Pietro. After the war, his grandchildren Franco and Mario gave to the company a new impetus and a more wide–ranging dimension. In more recent times, Pier Giorgio, great–grandson of the founder, has consolidated its image and increased its presence in world markets.
The Scrimaglio family has been present in Piedmont since the seventeenth century. It comes from France, where he it was named
Escrimeaux (swordsman) and from where it fled, due the persecution of the Huguenots, during the massacre of Saint Bartholomew, on August 24, 1572.
In the lands of Monferrato (Asti province) it has given its name to an area that is still called Regione Scrimaglio and is located on the border between Castelvero County and the Marquis land of Nizza, where the farm and the historical vineyards of Costa del Sole and Valle del Vento are located.
TENUTA OLIM BAUDA is a family-owned winery that produces exceptional wines using sustainable farming practices. The Spertino family has been devoting itself for generations to the cultivation of vines and the vinification of grapes.
Even grandfather Luigi Spertino (who, like him, was called Luigi) grew vines and produced both Barbera and Grignolino.
Their winegrowers tradition continued for four generations.
The company’s commercial breakthrough took place in 1978, when Luigi Spertino decided to bottle all his wine, that coming from the grapes of his own vineyards, as well as that coming from purchased grapes.
Today, in the winery winemaking techniques that combine technological innovation, such as the cold pre–fermentative maceration, is combined with the tradition handed down from generation to generation.
Coppo Winery is a family-owned winery committed to crafting exceptional wines using sustainable viticulture practices. Their grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted to ensure the highest quality, and their winemaking techniques combine tradition with innovation. La Braida is a young company that experiences great synergy, comparisons and enthusiasm which involve family and the staff. It owns 56 hectares for the production of DOCG wines (Barbera, Moscato, Brachetto) and DOC wines (Grignolino, Monferrato Rosso, Langhe Bianco, Langhe Chardonnay).
The agricultural company of the Pasquero house is located in Bricco Gatti, on the top of a hill in the early years of the 900. In line with the local peasant spirit, the Tarabra–Pasquero family cultivated lands of property with mixed cultures and a very high subdivision of the land. All this was enough at the time of an adequate sustenance of a rural family.
Before Tarabra, and then Maggiorino, continue a respectable life made of daily challenges in harmony with nature. Pinin, considered one of the most sage of the village, is remembered for his high stature, also moral, and his mentality of broad views. Maggiorino is a great lover of horses, and in addition to the tow–horses for the rural labor he cultivates his passion for cart–horses and ponies for his children.
The true soul of the company remains, as often happens, Clementina, daughter of Pinin and wife of Maggiorino. She structures and educates the entire household and still follows, now with a reassured eye, the work done by her son Michelangelo.
Michelangelo, Miklo for friends, has always been interested in working at home and in the countryside. The youngest of six brothers, after finishing his studies in Agriculture with specialization in the care and defense of the plants, was geared toward working at home, with particular attention to the organic.
In 1994, therefore, the first real vintage of Hilberg Pasquero wines was produced, a vintage now hard to find. Do not hesitate to come to the winery to taste it (so we can explain certain peculiarities of those years) and, most importantly, taste it again for the last time.
Angelo Rocca is continuing in Barbaresco the work, in the vineayard and in the winery, of the many generations of his family, who started their business at the beginning of the twentieth century.
As a vinegrower and winemaker, he has always tried, with accuracy, to combine and confront tradition with the new proposals of the modern processing and technology.
With this new focus point, Angelo Rocca went on developing his company, first of all from the vinegrowing point of view, leading the current surface cultivated with vines to 18 hectares, located mostly in Barbaresco, but with interesting offshots also in Neive and in the small San Rocco Seno d’Elvio district, in the municipality of Alba, but still within the area of Barbaresco.
Beyond Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, which remains the vine to which Angelo is especially bonded, in the farm Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese and Chardonnay are also grown. Globally the production is around 106,000 bottles of wine, distributed with scurpololousness in the most exclusive stores and restaurants all over the world.
Family–run company, founded as a winery by father Pasquale, who was one of the first producers of Neive to sell wine in bottles, debuting with his first label in 1974 with the Barbaresco of 1971, the year in which the first of his three daughters was born. Pasquale was a conservative in the processing of the must, but open to new trends and technologies both in the winery and regarding the work in the vineyards. The work in the vineyard was followed exclusively by Pasquale himself, unfortunately departed in September 2007 and, his daughter Ornella, now, with the help of her family, does her best to continue the company management following in her father’s footsteps. The plants in the vineyard are true gems and are visited also by the producers of the area.
The farmhouse is located on top of a hill surrounded by 8 hectares of vineyards of property, in one of the most beautiful and suited areas of Neive. The total production is about 20,000 bottles a year.

Since 1997, when Renato Vacca decided to vinify on his own his grapes previously sold to producers of Barbaresco, the denomination was enriched with a new protagonist.
This, thanks not only to the passion of the producer, but also to the vineyards located in their major part in the cru Ovello: limestones with veins of sand with a high content of calcium at 300 meters above sea level, facing south–southwest.
The vines have an average age of 40 years (but some are 70).
From here two wines that we review come (the others are not ready yet): Barbaresco 2004 and the very rich Ovello 2003, near to be awarded with the “5 Grappoli” (“5 Clusters”). They will be talked about in the future years.

A family linked to the territory, since the late 50s when Francesco, the father of Bruno Rocca, with his wife Maria Adelaide, moved from the center of Barbaresco to the Rabaj area, where he bought part of the vineyard. Thus began the growth of the company and the abandonment of sharecropping. Bruno, not yet of age, learned to recognize in grapes the true expression of the land and, after the first few decades when the product of the vineyard was sold almost entirely to the producers of Barbaresco, and vinified only in small part, from 1978 decided to make a change in his company. The enthusiasm of the wine market in full development saw as protagonist also the Rabaj Company by Bruno Rocca that, with the sale of wine in bottles, developed its name and image in the Italian and international scene. The philosophy of wine as a natural expression of the territory of Barbaresco was appreciated and the gradual growth led to the purchase of new plots and to the expansion of the winery, to the present day.

Cantina Enrico Serafino was founded in 1878 in Canale d’Alba, the main town in the heart of the Roero and a farming village rich in history, whose earliest records date back to the Middle Ages.
