The best wineries in Piemonte.
In 1992 the Estate of the Castle was purchased by Simone Lupano, who re–launched vine cultivation – began as well as five centuries before, in 1491, by the Pico–Gonzaga feudatories – in this area highly suited for the production of excellent grapes, without undermining these historical roots and in the maximum respect of the terroir.
In honor of this ancient vocation, two wines of excellece have been produced: &lduqo;1491” and “Pico–Gonzaga”. The choice of the wines produced, as well as the one of vine grapes, are not made in an offhand way, they have in common the characteristic of the prestigious DOC wines of the area: Barbera del Monferrato, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Monferrato Freisa and Piemonte Chardonnay.
“Castello di Uviglie” rises on a beautiful hill east of Rossignano, 8km from Casale Monferrato, surrounded by more or less 150 hectares of land, of which 25 cultivated with vineyards. The winery has a collection capacity of 3,500 hl and is equipped with modern technologies, even using traditional methods of vinification.
Francesco Scrimaglio, at the beginning of the twentieth century, began his business as a winegrower, expanded in the 20s by his son Pietro. After the war, his grandchildren Franco and Mario gave to the company a new impetus and a more wide–ranging dimension. In more recent times, Pier Giorgio, great–grandson of the founder, has consolidated its image and increased its presence in world markets.
The Scrimaglio family has been present in Piedmont since the seventeenth century. It comes from France, where he it was named
Escrimeaux (swordsman) and from where it fled, due the persecution of the Huguenots, during the massacre of Saint Bartholomew, on August 24, 1572.
In the lands of Monferrato (Asti province) it has given its name to an area that is still called Regione Scrimaglio and is located on the border between Castelvero County and the Marquis land of Nizza, where the farm and the historical vineyards of Costa del Sole and Valle del Vento are located.
When such a practical and poetic at the same time activity, like that of making wine, is handed down from father to son for four generations, not only the land and the structures are handed down, but most of all passion, care and experience are learned, those emotions that turn into great glasses.
Firstly, great–grandfather Giacinto, then grandfather Giovanni and father Agostino (Dino). Since 1998, the brothers Dino, Diana and Gianni Bertolino engage in the wine industry, offering superior wines of recognized and appreciated high quality.
The three brothers have observed and learned. Today each one has specific tasks in their family company: Dino is responsible for the management of the vineyards and for production, Diana for administration, and Gianni for the commercial activity and for customer relations.
The three brothers are supported by the collaboration of two technicians of exception: the agronomist Federico Curtaz and the oenologist Giuseppe Caviola.
The Spertino family has been devoting itself for generations to the cultivation of vines and the vinification of grapes.
Even grandfather Luigi Spertino (who, like him, was called Luigi) grew vines and produced both Barbera and Grignolino.
Their winegrowers tradition continued for four generations.
The company’s commercial breakthrough took place in 1978, when Luigi Spertino decided to bottle all his wine, that coming from the grapes of his own vineyards, as well as that coming from purchased grapes.
Today, in the winery winemaking techniques that combine technological innovation, such as the cold pre–fermentative maceration, is combined with the tradition handed down from generation to generation.
The family history is intertwined with that of the town of Canelli, already then the capital of Moscato, but also rich in Barbera, following its footsteps for over a century and consolidating itself. It was created in the name of Moscato, when Piero Coppo, the founder, began to produce, in the early twentieth century, sweet sparkling wines that were distinctive of Made in Italy, before the anglophile habit started calling it so.
From the sweet sparkling wines to brut based on Pinot it was an obvious step, as well as obvious was to deal with the great red wines of Monferrato and Langhe. The company became solid, as witnessed by the elegant family home in the town center, the long series of wineries that penetrate the hill, revealing, through subsequent geological layers, the different ages.
La Braida is a young company that experiences great synergy, comparisons and enthusiasm which involve family and the staff. It owns 56 hectares for the production of DOCG wines (Barbera, Moscato, Brachetto) and DOC wines (Grignolino, Monferrato Rosso, Langhe Bianco, Langhe Chardonnay).
The agricultural company of the Pasquero house is located in Bricco Gatti, on the top of a hill in the early years of the 900. In line with the local peasant spirit, the Tarabra–Pasquero family cultivated lands of property with mixed cultures and a very high subdivision of the land. All this was enough at the time of an adequate sustenance of a rural family.
Before Tarabra, and then Maggiorino, continue a respectable life made of daily challenges in harmony with nature. Pinin, considered one of the most sage of the village, is remembered for his high stature, also moral, and his mentality of broad views. Maggiorino is a great lover of horses, and in addition to the tow–horses for the rural labor he cultivates his passion for cart–horses and ponies for his children.
The true soul of the company remains, as often happens, Clementina, daughter of Pinin and wife of Maggiorino. She structures and educates the entire household and still follows, now with a reassured eye, the work done by her son Michelangelo.
Michelangelo, Miklo for friends, has always been interested in working at home and in the countryside. The youngest of six brothers, after finishing his studies in Agriculture with specialization in the care and defense of the plants, was geared toward working at home, with particular attention to the organic.
In 1994, therefore, the first real vintage of Hilberg Pasquero wines was produced, a vintage now hard to find. Do not hesitate to come to the winery to taste it (so we can explain certain peculiarities of those years) and, most importantly, taste it again for the last time.
Angelo Rocca is continuing in Barbaresco the work, in the vineayard and in the winery, of the many generations of his family, who started their business at the beginning of the twentieth century.
As a vinegrower and winemaker, he has always tried, with accuracy, to combine and confront tradition with the new proposals of the modern processing and technology.
With this new focus point, Angelo Rocca went on developing his company, first of all from the vinegrowing point of view, leading the current surface cultivated with vines to 18 hectares, located mostly in Barbaresco, but with interesting offshots also in Neive and in the small San Rocco Seno d’Elvio district, in the municipality of Alba, but still within the area of Barbaresco.
Beyond Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, which remains the vine to which Angelo is especially bonded, in the farm Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese and Chardonnay are also grown. Globally the production is around 106,000 bottles of wine, distributed with scurpololousness in the most exclusive stores and restaurants all over the world.
Family–run company, founded as a winery by father Pasquale, who was one of the first producers of Neive to sell wine in bottles, debuting with his first label in 1974 with the Barbaresco of 1971, the year in which the first of his three daughters was born. Pasquale was a conservative in the processing of the must, but open to new trends and technologies both in the winery and regarding the work in the vineyards. The work in the vineyard was followed exclusively by Pasquale himself, unfortunately departed in September 2007 and, his daughter Ornella, now, with the help of her family, does her best to continue the company management following in her father’s footsteps. The plants in the vineyard are true gems and are visited also by the producers of the area.
The farmhouse is located on top of a hill surrounded by 8 hectares of vineyards of property, in one of the most beautiful and suited areas of Neive. The total production is about 20,000 bottles a year.
Sometimes, when we talk about a family–owned company, we think of a really closed reality and that follows pre–established standards. Of a different importance and vitality, instead, is the company of the Alario family in Diano d’Alba, that have in their DNA curiosity, a sense of challenge and rigor. Claudio, the owner, has gone beyond his excellent warhorses: Barbera Valletta, very good and near to the “5 Grappoli” (“5 Clusters”), Nebbiolo Cascinotto, deep and rich, Dolcetto Costa Flore, modern and spicy, but with good results has challenged himself with Barolo Sorano and Dolcetto Superiore Pradurent, both at their second edition. Young plants that with the care, passion and knowledge of Claudio are going to give more and more satisfaction.
The company was founded in 1975 with the purchase of the Cottà farmhouse and part of the current vineyards. It was expanded in the following years with the purchase of the vineyards in the Currà, Fausoni and San Cristoforo subareas.
It is a family business. A few years ago, son Andrea, technical winemaker, and daughter Elena, joined the company as collaborators of father Rino, owner and oenologist. Currently we cultivate 16 hectares of vineyards in the hilly area very suitable for winegrowing in the south–western part of Piedmont called Langhe, in the heart of Neive.
The production consists of 5 cru of Barbaresco: Currà, Cottà, Fausoni, Pajor and Basarin, Dolcetto Bric del Salto, Barbera Pairolero and Mat, red wine made from Brachetto grapes.
They produced a total of 85,000 bottles divided into 20,000 bottles of Dolcetto d’Alba, 12,000 of Barbera d’Alba, 20,000 of Langhe Nebbiolo, 6,500 of Brachetto dry and about 25,000 of Barbaresco.
Particular attention is paid to the vineyard, so as to have, through low yields of grapes, a high concentration that allows us to produce structured, full–bodied and very long–lived wines.
It is our belief that the viticulture practiced in a serious and proper way should respect the natural balance both of the land and of the environment. For this reason, already from beginning of the 90s, along with other companies, we have started practicing the guided pest management with pesticides and fertilizers. The traditional diseases that affect vines are fought with environmentally friendly products. Treatments are kept to a minimum and made only if necessary.
In the cellar no manipulation is carried out, bottling occurs without fining nor filtration, we do not have nor use vacuum–sealed concentrators nor devices for reverse osmosis. The only concentration that we implement is the thinning of the bunches in the vineyard.
Since 1997, when Renato Vacca decided to vinify on his own his grapes previously sold to producers of Barbaresco, the denomination was enriched with a new protagonist.
This, thanks not only to the passion of the producer, but also to the vineyards located in their major part in the cru Ovello: limestones with veins of sand with a high content of calcium at 300 meters above sea level, facing south–southwest.
The vines have an average age of 40 years (but some are 70).
From here two wines that we review come (the others are not ready yet): Barbaresco 2004 and the very rich Ovello 2003, near to be awarded with the “5 Grappoli” (“5 Clusters”). They will be talked about in the future years.
When in Barbaresco the vine was not the undisputed queen of the hills yet, Donato Giacosa, father of Carlo, decided to devote his life to viticulture and territory. He was a master in the art of grafting and his work, applied to his vineyards of property, but also to those of other producers, was fundamental to the development of local viticulture. And it is still evident today. His son Carlo, from an early age, devoted himself to viticulture and, in the sixties, the company was founded, when the production of wine from the vineyards of the property started. The activity continued to our day, with the collaboration of Carla, wife of Carlo and Maria Grazia, one of their daughters.
A family linked to the territory, since the late 50s when Francesco, the father of Bruno Rocca, with his wife Maria Adelaide, moved from the center of Barbaresco to the Rabaj area, where he bought part of the vineyard. Thus began the growth of the company and the abandonment of sharecropping. Bruno, not yet of age, learned to recognize in grapes the true expression of the land and, after the first few decades when the product of the vineyard was sold almost entirely to the producers of Barbaresco, and vinified only in small part, from 1978 decided to make a change in his company. The enthusiasm of the wine market in full development saw as protagonist also the Rabaj Company by Bruno Rocca that, with the sale of wine in bottles, developed its name and image in the Italian and international scene. The philosophy of wine as a natural expression of the territory of Barbaresco was appreciated and the gradual growth led to the purchase of new plots and to the expansion of the winery, to the present day.
Azienda Agricola Piero Busso was founded in 1953.
It is a small family–run business: Piero, with the help of his wife Lucia and their children, Emanuela and Pierguido, follows all the phases of wine production, from the vineyard to the cellar. The watchword of the Busso family is: wine in respect of the territory.
The careful selection of grapes, the unique characteristics of the soil and the ideal exposure of our vineyards allow us to obtain harvests suitable for the production of great wines. Every facility is used, according to our philosophy, to optimize a viticulture that respects the soil, the plant and the environment. For this reason, we do a few treatments, we do not use chemical herbicides and we enrich the soil of only natural compounds. Our vineyards may, therefore, be considered to be of low environmental impact. All these conditions, which are essential to obtain good harvests, are not betrayed by a fermentation of industrial type, marked by an excessive use of technology and chemistry.
Therefore, our work in the vineyard and in the cellar, is aimed to achieve a wine that respects its fruits, its taste (aroma and flavor) and its origin.
