The foundation of the Contucci Wineries dates back to the period prior to that of the eponymous building (also home of Pope Julius III and the Grand Duke Ferdinando I) built in the sixteenth century by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder and painted internally by Andrea Pozzo; one can therefore say that they date back to the thirteenth century and were part of the more narrow walls of Montepulciano.
The farm covers 170 hectares, of which 21 are planted with vineyards and, of these, 15 are enrolled in the "Albo del Nobile", while the others are used for the production of Rosso di Montepulciano, Bianco della Contessa, Sansovino and Vin Santo. The vineyards of Contucci are located in one of the best areas of production, the altitude that varies between 280 and 450 meters.
The soils are predominantly of Pliocene origin, with the presence of clay and sand.
The vines consist solely of native vines (Prugnolo Gentile, Canaiolo Nero, Mammolo, Colorino, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia del Chianti and Grechetto), are trained in Guyot system and have a density of approximately 3,300/4,000 plants per hectare, with contained yields (less than 55 q/ha) which allow to obtain grapes of excellent quality. The agronomic interventions are always characterized by the utmost respect for the environment; "pest management" is practiced; fertilization, short pruning and thinning of the bunches are practiced depending on the vintage needs. But harvest is done by hand, in boxes, and with various steps by selecting clusters. The gradual replacement of old vineyards has began.
The vintner Adamo Pallecchi is intent to observe the brilliance of Vino Nobile.
The historic cellars, carefully worked for fifty years by Adamo Pallecchi, skillful and trusted vintner, are divided on three floors, offering the visitor a magnificent glance. The capacity is of 1,000 tons in cement vats and 500 tons in stainless steel tanks for winemaking, and 1,300 tons in oak barrels for aging, and 1,000 tons in steel and concrete vats; here all the wines produced by the company ripen: Vino Nobile (classic, Pietra Rossa, Mulinvecchio, Reserve), Rosso di Montepulciano, Sansovino (by the sculptor and architect Andrea Contucci said "Sansovino", 1467–1529), Vin Santo, Bianco della Contessa, made in honor of the women of the family, for a total of about 100,000 bottles a year.
