The agricultural company of Giuseppe Gabbas covers an area of about 30 hectares, of which 20 are cultivated with vineyards and 5 with olive groves, at an altitude between 240m and 350m above sea level in a valley at the foot of Supramonte, in the heart of Sardinia, ten km from Nuoro, the capital of Barbagia.
Deep soils, of granitic origin and sufficiently permeable, retain some moisture even during periods of long drought.
The particular climate of the area, influenced by the temperate breezes that come from the sea, which is a little more than twenty miles far, and the proximity of mountains, provide a good temperature range, with positive effects on the color and the flavor profile of grapes.
This promotes an ecosystem that is ideal for vines, reducing, inter alia, pesticide treatments, performed only with traditional products.
The rationality of the plants and their small extension make possible to practice a viticulture of the highest quality, based on growing principles such as pruning and restrained crop yields aimed at obtaining the exaltation of the varietal characteristics of the grapes.
The most cultivated grape variety is Cannonau, to which other local varieties were added, selected among the most interesting of the rich Sardinian wine panorama.
This small and dynamic production reality in an area particularly suited to the cultivation of vines is always able to give its best, giving wine traits of elegance and territoriality that elsewhere are difficult to reach.
Wild and charming land of granite boulders shaped by the wind, of imposing corks with blood–red trunks, snow–white sands and crystal clear waters that fade from intense blue to emerald green, the Gallura land finds the roots of its name in the cock on the coat of arms of the Visconti, the first lords of Giudicato. The same cock that from 1956 identifies the wines of Cantina Gallura.
In Tempio Pausania, at the foot of Mount Limbara, the winery has collected in itself the age–old tradition of high Gallura winegrowers, already known in the eighteenth century beyond the borders of the Sardinia island for the production of a Moscato of excellence.
The rigorous selection systems, the modern processes of vinification and aging in barrels or in barriques, give rise to wines of high quality level and organoleptic characteristics in harmony with the evolution of tastes and needs of consumers.
Spearhead of the winery is Vermentino di Gallura, the only wine in Sardinia to be awarded, in 1996, with the prestigious Controlled Designation of Origin Guaranteed. The five types produced are: Canayli and Genesi (Superiore typology), Piras, Gemellae and Mavriana, all of excellent quality level, and are the result of the most advanced technologies. Besides the native cultivars, Vermentino, Cannonau, Moscato, Pascale, Caricagiola, the members of Cantina Gallura grow Nebbiolo, a grape variety, this latter, imported from Piedmont in 1700. From the vinification of these grapes you get three quality wines, Karana, Dolmen and the new Luna Nova, which soon captivated the attention of the public and the critics.
Gostolai Wine Company began its activity in 1988, just for fun, but with the aim to enhance more and more grapes that the land of Oliena and its particular microclimate produce.
The name Gostolai comes from the locality of the same name where the family vineyards are located, that provided the grapes for the production of our first wines.
Over the years, the company has increased and diversified production, acquiring grapes from other growers who found rewarding and gratifying to give up their production, which by the way was subtracted to the anonymity which was first intended.
Currently, we produce five DOC wines and seven IGT wines, as well as three types of grappa.
Attilio Contini Wine company, founded in 1898 by Salvatore Contini, is among the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Sardinia. The son Attilio, father of the current owners, went on skillfully with the work renovating and enlarging the existing winery and strengthening the surface of vineyards in the most suited zones.
The size of the company, still family–owned, has allowed to devote the best care and attention to the selection of the vines and the grapes, to vinification and aging, in respect of the oldest traditions. The children and grandchildren of the founder dedicate themselves now, with passion and skill, to the careful selection of the vines and the grapes, to vinification and aging, in respect of the oldest traditions of the place.
Angelino: they make their first harvest and the efforts are rewarded with the first bottling, which occurrs in 1977. In 1985, the company proceeds to the planting of other 10,000 square meters of Malvasia and in the next five years extends its area of vineyard bringing it to a total of about 40,000 square meters. Over the past decade, the Porcu brothers have embarked on a major modernization process purchasing more suitable equipment for wine–making and the provision of adequate facilities for the reception of visitors. The company registered at D.O.C. vineyards since 1972 and has an annual production of about 60 quintals per hectare, which is designed entirely to aging for at least two years in chestnut barrels. The company is surrounded by a beautiful natural setting and offers a spectacular view. The winery is located in the middle of the vineyard, and has an area of three hundred square meters.
The company was founded on the drive and passion of the patriarch Giovanni Battista Columbu, who in 1972 purchased from a relative a vineyard of more than 18,000 square meters which had been grown for over a hundred years with mixed colture of traditional vines, situated in Fraus locality, in the territory of Magomadas. In the following years, G. Battista Columbu started a first replanting of trees replacing centuries–old logs and increasing the grafts of the original Malvasia vine.
In that same period (1973/1974) together with the estimated producer Salvatore Deriu (known as Zegone, who was the first to understand the importance of the grape variety selection and of monoculture plants, and experimented bottling for the marketing of the product) and some other famous supporters of the value this wine, like Mario Soldati and Luigi Veronelli, who dedicated to Malvasia pages of high value, G.B. Columbu devoted himself to research study aimed at recognizing the wine and cultural identity of the product, so as to obtain the enrollment in the DOC register.
In 1980, the company inherited another vineyard of about 20,000 square meters, in Campeda locality, in the territory of Bosa.
In 1992 the first bottle of Malvasia di Bosa G.B. Columbu was launched and in 2004 another product approached the tradition, made from Malvasia grapes, too: Lalvarega.
Currently, the company combines tradition with modern systems for vinegrowing and winemaking and is registered in the Register of DOC vineyards since 1988.
Cantina di Sorso was founded in 1955: the excellent quality of the grapes grown prompted the construction of a modern facility where tradition and technology could meet.
The Lu Beddu winery has been growing grapes since 1975, producing wines according to the ancient traditions of the area. The selected grapes express the best characteristics of Gallura, the territory of excellence of the regional oenology.
