The best wineries in Lombardia.
Thanks to a highly suited micro–area and to the opportunity to work with an highly specialized oenologist like the transalpine Jean Piere Valade, the Biatta family concentrates its energis almost exclusively on the production of Franciacorta DOCG. A step over the others, the two Franciacorta Secolo Novo: elegant and kaleidoscopic wines, able to further increase their organoleptic heritage if “forgotten” for some time in the wine cellar.
The “small” company run by Fabio and Patrizia Lantieri de Paratico presents constantly a series of extravagant labels, interpreted with professionalism and measure. Of the production, which embraces practically every type of Franciacorta, Arcadia 2005 stands out, with elegant scents and a lively and refreshing taste, a product that combines structure and semplicity of approach.
A company which has experienced an exponential growth in almost twenty years. La Montina has created a selection capable of conveying an absolute respect for the varietal characteristics of the grape varieties and the designations of local origin: wines are well–balanced, complex by nature, without exaggerations in the management of woods for winemaking, nor excesses of those fragrant notes that often veil the authenticity of sparkling wines.
The staff of Mosnel, skillfully headed by Giulio and Lucia Barzan, gave us the opportunity to evaluate a variegated range of wines, with really encouraging average scores. Leading the tasting, Franciacorta Emanuela Barboglio, which combines ductility and drinking immediacy and polychromatic complexity. Nice surprise Franciacorta Brut Rosé: clear, “joyful” and very persistent.
The work begun in 1975 and developed by the Gatti family and Enzo Balzarini, assisted by skilled winery technicians, continues without any standstill. Their passion has created, over the years, a business able to communicate with clear thinking and rigour the Franciacorta territory. Franciacorta Brut 2004 stands out, characterized by a fine and elegant structure, where all is rigorously combined and enhanced by a “well–explained” territorial identity.
Processing of grapes able to enhance the local terrain of calcareous nature, high reachability on the market and a total adherence to the Franciacorta designations of origin, are the basis on which Roberto Gatti has founded a constant and catchy production. To excel, once again, Franciacorta Extra Brut vintage, which is distinguished by a unique combination of taste–aromatic intensity and cleanliness of accomplishment.
The Contadi Castaldi line, addressed especially to a young and modern clientele, can be considered one of the most attractive and alluring in the Brescia scenery. Maturation, partly in stainless steel and partly in tonneau, together with a long fermentation, are indeed guarantee of fragrant and seductive wines. Excellent are Soul Satèn 2001, with great qualities of balance and integration of elements, and Ros 2005, great compromise between structure and freshness of approach.
The quality of the company choice consolidates the positions won in previous years. We enjoyed the tasting of Franciacorta Brut 2004, that boasts considerable aromatic complexity and richness of taste, conferred by a rather generous “dosage” and a long aging on lees. More moderate is Franciacorta Brut Satèn, ideal to accompany fried fish or shellfish. Franciacorta Rosè makes an unimportant step back, which this year appears flattened by an out of the common alcohol content.
Castello Bonomi, former Bonomi Tenuta Castellino, changes business name and property. The Paladin family, understanding the great potential of the company’s vines, situated on the slopes of Mount Orfano, among the seven most suited micro–areas within the entire Franciacorta landscape, has recently purchased the estate. In the tasting, the top is Franciacorta Brut 2004, marked by a sumptuous and “mature” structure, able to extend and enhance the pleasure of drinking. Even Franciacorta Satàn offers moments of satisfaction, thanks to its amusing, citrus and youth breath.
Bersi Serlini is a highly specialized company in the production of Franciacorta, obtained, apart from rare exceptions, from Chardonnay grapes: they are ideal to best express the characteristics of the soils of glacial origin in the territory. The evaluated wines have revealed complexity and moderation, without ever surrender to alluring and generously “dosed” structures, that would trivialize their outstanding character.
The company is managed by the Berlucchi brothers, is located in the heart of Franciacorta, in the central part of the moraine hills, and is characterized by a very personal style. All its wines – especially sparkling – enjoy a tasting structure based on a perfect balance among fruity, citrus, mineral and fragrant features, orchestrated by perlage obtained with mastery: a guarantee of harmonious wines easy to pair with all dishes.
A successful combination of rare manual dexterity and avant–garde methods. This is the balance of taste of Bellavista. Which is refined with the ability to make choices. Which is expressed in the character and personality of each wine through the clever use of fermented musts into small pices. Precious scents of ripe fruit. The production implemented by the staff of the company has shown, in the years, a constant growth, proven even by the top Franciacorta Satèn 2005, a product of rare delicacy and complexity, witness of how the Corte Franca area with its calcareous soils of moraine origins can generate bubbles of exceptional substance and longevity. Outstanding is the level of the entire produciton, especially referring to its easy availability and its wide choice.
La Prendina agricultural company has a recent history in the wine sector, was purchased in 1958 and the cultivation of the vine, after deep changes in the hydrogeological features, was launched treasuring the experiences gained in Custoza by the owners. Even older are the first traces of the existence of Prendina as a farm. The cartography at the time of the Gonzaga family, lords of Mantua, records the existence of Prendina, more recent verbal testimonies testify the presence of a church and a tower, historically called “dovecote”, a typical square construction of three floors, which belongs to the existing buildings and currently is depicted in the company logo.
Initially, wines were sold under the Cavalchina brand, the first wine to bear the name of La Prendina was a Merlot bottled in 1980 for Gualtiero Marchesi. Even today Merlot is the grape variety that gives the best results.
Only in 1990 La Prendina became a completely autonomous brand. The affirmation of La Prendina is entrusted to its Bordeaux vineyards, and Il Vigneto del Falcone was the flagship wine of the company in guides, competitions and tastings.
Il Calepino company combines in its denomination the enological and cultural values of the hilly area called Valcalepio.
It was Angelo Plebani, in 1972, who designed and built the company, naming it with this curious name, inextricably linking his precious bottles and the famous encyclopedic friar.
In the Valcalepio DOC area, the Il Calepino company extends its vineyards on moraine terraces (called Sure), where vines always find a suitable home: the draining soil is ideal for obtaining an optimum state of ripeness of grapes and therefore wines of intense, complex and typical bouquet.
