A full day to get up close and personal with the red grape varieties that epitomize the authenticity, uniqueness, and tradition of Veneto: in the historic center of Treviso , inside the prestigious Santa Caterina Museum , on Sunday, October 18, the Italian Sommelier Association – AIS Veneto ETS presents Rosso Autoctono , a tasting dedicated to local varieties such as Raboso, Recantina , and Tai Rosso , symbols of regional winemaking excellence. Over 200 labels —including white wines— from more than 50 Veneto wineries will be available for tasting: a valuable opportunity to discover the potential and many nuances of red wines by engaging with the producers present, at a time of evolving consumption styles. Next to the tasting tables, a stand from the Asiago Cheese Protection Consortium will guide visitors through the various aging stages of this specialty.
"The Veneto region boasts an extraordinary winemaking heritage, consisting not only of world-renowned appellations, but also of native grape varieties that preserve stories, territories, and identities that deserve to be told and promoted," explains Gianpaolo Breda , President of AIS Veneto. "I believe it's crucial today to communicate wine with authority, expertise, and above all, with a cultural approach, going beyond simple tasting. Rosso Autoctono was created with the aim of offering the public the tools to understand what's in the glass. Doing so in the halls and cloisters of the Santa Caterina Museum takes on a special meaning for us: establishing a dialogue between art and wine culture means recognizing its value as an expression of the territory and our history. It's a fusion that I find particularly beautiful and that perfectly reflects the role of AIS Veneto."
In addition to the walk-around tasting, four masterclasses will showcase four different Veneto wine-growing areas, thanks to collaboration with the Consortia . The first, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and led by AIS speaker Gianni Degli Innocenti and the Consortium for the Protection of Colli Euganei Wines, is a journey into the heart of the Euganean Hills , a region characterized by its extraordinary geological complexity.
The second tasting, scheduled for 1:00 PM, will feature Raboso , a proud, austere variety deeply rooted in the Piave region. The masterclass will be led by Stefano Quaggio, Director of the Consorzio Vini Venezia, and Alberto Toffanello, Best Sommelier of Veneto 2025 and Best Raboso Sommelier 2023, who will retrace its history and evolution.
At 3:00 PM, the focus will be on Recantina , a nearly forgotten variety now experiencing an extraordinary revival. This masterclass illustrates the profound connection between the vines, history, and terroir of Montello and the Asolo Hills. The masterclass, led by AIS speaker Federico Cocchetto and the Asolo Montello Consortium, will take participants on a journey through memory, rediscovery, and territorial identity.
Finally, the final event will be dedicated to Tai Rosso : the winemaking icon of the Berici Hills, deeply rooted in the Vicenza hills and particularly the Barbarano area, it is a grape variety capable of immediately expressing the terroir. The tasting will be led by Giovanni Ponchia, Director of the Consortium for the Protection of DOC Colli Berici and Vicenza Wines, and Francesca Ceron, AIS speaker.
The Rosso Autoctono tasting tables, open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., are accessible either by purchasing tickets online in advance for €15 (€12 for AIS members) or by purchasing directly at the event entrance for €18. Masterclasses cost €10 each.
