The president of Confagricoltura Piemonte Enrico Allasia sent a letter to the regional councilor for agriculture Marco Protopapa to ask for particular attention to the problems of the wine sector, which is among those most affected by the restrictive measures due to the emergency COVID 19.

The increase in stocks of some types of product, due to the failure to sell due to the closure of the HORECA channel and the difficulties on foreign markets - Confagricoltura recalls - led the national government to enact some measures aimed at managing surpluses and limiting future production : crisis distillation, voluntary reduction of yields for PDO and PGI wines and mandatory reduction of yields for generic wines.
" The voluntary reduction of the yields for the grapes destined for the production of DOC and DOCG wines - Allasia writes - is of interest to our companies, but much will depend on the value of the contribution that the Ministry will decide to make for the reduction of production ".
Piedmont produces, for over 90% of the total, high quality DOC and DOCG wines . " For this reason our organization - explains the director of Confagricoltura Piemonte Ercole Zuccaro - asks to support in a diversified way the partial reduction of the yields: moreover it is necessary that also the production of generic wines, made in limited quantities in Piedmont and more widely in others in reality, be discouraged to encourage a rebalancing of stocks ".
Gianluca Demaria, president of the wine producers of Confagricoltura Piemonte , underlines how "it is important, in this situation, to act quickly, possibly even with the use of a special regional allocation for the crisis distillation of some types of wines ".
Confagricoltura stresses that this is a necessary measure, " especially for those denominations that show signs of excessive market heaviness, to prevent speculative phenomena from being generated during the harvest such as to put in serious difficulty both the wine growers who sell the grapes, as non-winemakers, both the wine growers who, having exhausted their storage capacity, would not know how to place the new crop ".
Finally Confagricoltura asks the Region to support private storage , with a contribution aimed at reducing the cost of the intervention, also in this case only for certain denominations, to be evaluated together with the protection consortia , producer organizations and professional agricultural organizations .
