The increase in prices and bottling led to the decision to release 8,900 hl of bulk wine.

In the first three months of 2021 the Lugana appellation grew, a significant double-digit increase that was recorded both for bottling (11.25%), and for prices: 23% for grapes and even 69% for bulk wine (source: Verona Chamber of Commerce compared to the first quarter of 2020).

The drop in the ratio between stocks at the end of March and bottled in the previous 12 months gives an optimistic picture of the performance of the Denomination which convinced the Protection Consortium to approve the release of 50% of the bulk wine currently placed in storage . The proposal received the favorable opinion of the Lombardy and Veneto Regions, and therefore made it possible to make about 8,900 hectoliters of wine available to the Lugana DOC producers' chain.

Harvest 2020: a successful year

The 2020 harvest has given us wines with great balance, thanks to the cool nights, which have preserved the acidity and elegance typical of Turbiana, and to a thermal trend that has allowed a great aromatic expression.

It will be an extremely pleasant vintage in the short term, but, making a prediction, we believe it will be remembered above all for some memorable Riserva types. Lugana Riserva must age or refine for at least 24 months, of which 6 in the bottle. It is characterized by brighter chromatic tones, more evolved and complex aromas, a warmer minerality on the palate and an evolutionary potential that can easily unfold over a decade.

The word to the expert

"The 2020 season was characterized by a dry winter and an extremely little rainy two-month period from April to May" explains Marco Tonni, agronomist of the Consortium . "The first quarter of the year was warmer than the average (625 ° C sum of the averages, compared to 525 ° C on average since 1996). This climatic trend led to an advance of the initial stages of development

of the vine, up to flowering, and of the progress of the early ripening phases ".

"The abundant rains in June and July induced an important vegetative growth but facilitated the development of Downy mildew on the young leaves, which helped to further slow down the ripening. Unfortunately, on Saturday 29 August there was an exceptional hailstorm in Lugana. for the intensity, but above all for the extension, since it involved practically the whole Denomination. In memory, such a wide extension is not remembered. maturation recovered a few days, although it remained medium-late and was completely interrupted in the first week of October (end of maturation). The average territorial productions settled on quantities that are within normal limits, except for the cast due to hail, while the potential quality is high thanks to the good maintenance of the acidic level ".

Lugana Influencer Tour

The first Lugana Influencer Tour took place in June, an initiative to enhance the most famous white wine of Garda and its extraordinary territory. If the lower Garda area is unparalleled for the density of artistic, historical, entertainment and culinary proposals, Lugana DOC is, in itself, an excellence. 2021 consecrated it first among national white wines in the large- scale retail trade (first quarter data), as well as being, in percentage terms, the one that in the last two years recorded the most important increase in this channel : 135% ( comparison between the first 4 months of 2019 and 2021).

This extraordinary combination was the focus of the #experiencelugana tour , 4 days of tastings and discoveries, culinary and otherwise, which featured 7 important travel and food influencers of our country: Marika Marangella, Anna Pernice, David Pinto, Marko Morciano , Sabrina Musco, Rocco Buffone.

The Consortium is dedicating great attention to digital communication to further the notoriety of the Lugana brand and to focus more and more on the interaction and loyalty of the Luganalover social community.
