The Marquis Lamberto Frescobaldi celebrates his new Chianti Rufina Reserve DOCG

Lamberto Frescobaldi presented his new wine: Nipozzano Vecchie Viti, produced in the ancient estate of Nipozzano, in the heart of Chianti Rufina

Historically dedicated to the new born of the Frescobaldi family, Nipozzano Vecchie Viti is a wine made with the most long–lived grapes of the Castle of Nipozzano, provided with a deep root system.

For over 1000 years the Castle of Nipozzano, whose name means “without well”, to testify that the area was poor in water, dominates the hills east of Florence. On the occasion of the event, some halls of the castle have been restored and opened to the public, and can be visited on reservation (hospitality@frescobaldi.it): here you can taste wines and other locally sourced products of the estate.

The walls of the castle, built to protect the feudal lords, now guard the precious red wines that ripen here, aged in oak: Montesodi since 1974, Mormoreto since 1983 and Nipozzano, the historic wine of the estate. In the historic cellar of the castle, only partially survived to the Second World War, a collection of rare bottles, the oldest of which dates back to 1864, is preserved.

In 70s the replanting of the vineyards in Nipozzano began, planting new clones and rootstocks: some vineyards of Nipozzano gave high quality results thanks to a combination of age and of the same terroir, and it was decided to preserve them. From a further and careful selection of these vineyards and the grapes harvested, Nipozzano Vecchie Viti 2011 was created: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo and Colorino, of brilliant ruby red color, aged, according to tradition, in large oak barrels. The surface of the vineyard is about 10 hectares facing south–east, at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level.

The result is a wine of great structure and harmony thanks to the quality of clayey and of limestone soils, a measured amount of organic substances, the dry and breezy climate that creates the perfect environment for the birth of the great red wines of Nipozzano. The refinement is done for 24 months and the use of large barrels enhances the finesse expressed from vines of over 40 years of age. A wine that demonstrates the continued commitment to excellence of the Frescobaldi family, the expression of passion for viticulture and the individual expression of each of the estates.

«I am particularly pleased and proud to present today Nipozzano Vecchie Viti – Lamberto Frescobaldi, President of the Tuscan company of the same name, says. For the occasion, we opened some halls of the castle and tasted historic vintages of Nipozzano from the private collection of my family: the 1961 and 1974 ones. The tradition, in effect, wants that, for every new born in the Frescobaldi family, a good number of bottles of the best wine present in the cellar is put aside. 1961 was the year in which wine was put aside for my birth, and I am glad of how this wine is still able to express itself, “telling” the territory which for us is the main feature of a wine».

Nipozzano Vecchie Viti embodies the characteristics of this fascinating story and of a unique production area: complex, deep, elegant. Excellent product, available in the best wine shops starting from June 2014, in limited quantities, it has the credentials to become a wine appreciated by connoisseurs and collectors.

The new wine will be officially presented at Vinitaly, but, for the first time in the Italian wine industry, on March 26th will be “tasted” by the Marquis Lamberto and by 5 important bloggers of the industry during a hanghout that will reveal all the secrets of this wine.
