A nine-day journey across the island involving all of Sicily's wine consortia.
The Assovini Sicilia event took place on May 27th at the UnaHotels Naxos Beach in Giardini Naxos, with a masterclass and a walkaround tasting dedicated to the island's native grape varieties. The evening continued with an exclusive dinner at the Mazzarò Sea Palace in Taormina. In total, over 50 wines from member wineries were tasted.
The masterclass, led by winemaker Patricia Toth, was themed "From A(ssovin)i to I: The Profusion of Possibilities in Sicilian Viticulture," a journey through the infinite nuances of Sicilian viticulture, illustrated through a selection of wines representative of the region's rich ampelographic diversity. The guided tasting featured some of Sicily's most distinctive grape varieties—including Catarratto, Malvasia delle Lipari, Grillo, Frappato, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera, and Nero d'Avola—interpreted in different production styles and terroirs, demonstrating the versatility and contemporaneity of Sicily's winemaking heritage.
" Welcoming the Masters of Wine to Sicily is an important opportunity for Assovini to engage in international dialogue and a strategic moment to showcase the value of our viticulture ," said Mariangela Cambria, President of Assovini Sicilia. " Through the masterclass and other activities included in our program, we wanted to showcase the extraordinary diversity of Sicilian wine: a region capable of expressing identity, elegance, and innovation thanks to its native grape varieties, its terroirs, and the production vision of our companies. The presence of the Masters of Wine—among the highest qualifications in the wine world—confirms the growing international interest in Sicily as one of the most dynamic winemaking regions in the Mediterranean ."
Sicilian Master of Wine Pietro Russo agrees: "This initiative represents an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the contemporary face of Sicilian wine to some of the world's most respected industry professionals. The trip was born from a specific request from the Institute of Masters of Wine and demonstrates the growing international interest in Sicily and its qualitative evolution. It's a project that has taken almost two years to develop and is now coming to fruition through nine days of meetings, explorations of territories, and tastings, designed to offer an authentic vision of the island's complexity and viticultural diversity. I thank Assovini Sicilia for believing in the initiative and contributing to its realization. I'm confident that the guests will take away an image of Sicilian wine, one of strong identities, consolidated quality, and growing ambition."
This activity certainly represents a further enhancement of the international promotional work carried out by Assovini Sicilia, an association that for over twenty years has brought together the island's most important wine producers with the aim of promoting Sicilian wine culture worldwide. The Masters of Wine undoubtedly contribute to strengthening the reputation of the appellations and native grape varieties in foreign markets, offering strategic positioning and promotion opportunities for the regional wine sector.
