The traditional international competition dedicated to the best extra virgin olive oils from around the world, curated by Marco Oreggia and Laura Marinelli , is back: it will form the basis of the new edition of Flos Olei 2027 – a guide to the world of extra virgin olive oil that recounts olive growing from around the world, its most fascinating territories, and its best interpreters. The Guide will be presented at the end of the year in Rome , during the highly anticipated Flos Olei Tour in Rome event ( 11-12 December 2026 ), which has become a regular event for oil lovers.
Flos Olei is a comprehensive manual, aptly nicknamed the Bible of Olive Oil. It comes in three bilingual editions (Italian-English, Italian-Chinese, and Italian-Spanish), covering five continents and over 57 countries (with in-depth coverage of 35 olive-growing regions, 20 in Italy and 15 in Spain), and features meticulously detailed maps and constantly updated statistics. The book lists the world's top 500 extra virgin olive oils , earning scores and awards in two rankings: the Hall of Fame and The Best.
The heart of the project is the international contest , aimed annually at quality olive oil production companies from all over the world who send their EVO oil samples to be evaluated by a panel of experts, chosen on a rotating basis from the approximately 50 Flos Olei tasters, led by Marco Oreggia.
Registration is open:
- From February 1st to June 30th for countries in the Northern Hemisphere.
- From April 1st to July 15th for countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
"Flos Olei is a competition open to all," explains Marco Oreggia , the project's creator and curator , "because we start from the belief that the barriers to quality have been broken down and that excellent results can be achieved on all five continents. However, at the same time, it is highly selective: the ranking is limited to 500 entries. Maximum inclusiveness, therefore, but also maximum rigor: to represent serious support for the admitted companies, who can use this reference as something more than an occasional medal."
"It's a contest for the companies," comments Laura Marinelli , curator of the guide, " rather than for the oils: while it's true that the panel tastes and evaluates the oils, it's also true that what we'll publish, assigning them a numerical score, are the companies, each of which doesn't just coincide with its best extra virgin olive oil in its best vintage, but is much more."
