The first event will be held on Thursday, January 29th at Ikigai – Westlands , from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm , with a wine painting workshop . There will be two sessions , each with approximately 18 participants , during which PurpleRyta will guide and challenge the audience in exploring this original painting technique. The workshop will be accompanied by an Italian wine tasting .
The second event will see PurpleRyta as the protagonist on Friday 30 January , at Shamba Events , on the occasion of the “ Top Italian Wines Roadshow” initiative, organised by Gambero Rosso for the third consecutive year in Kenya , in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Nairobi and the ICE – Italian Trade Agency .
During the event, starting at 2:00 PM , the artist will perform a live art performance lasting approximately one hour, painting a work of art from a wine stain. Some of PurpleRyta's works will also be on display during the event.
"It's an honor for me to be part of this project," the artist comments. "I find the encounter with another culture, in which wine acts as a trait d'union, very stimulating. I find it in perfect harmony with my motto 'wine contains culture' (and 'culture contains wine'), which I always remind people through social media and to anyone who visits my studio in Barolo, to emphasize that, behind a glass of wine, lies a rich cultural heritage. I will bring some of my Spettinate with me to serve as backdrops for the events."
PURPLERYTA
Rita Barbero, aka PurpleRyta, was born and raised in the Roero hills. After graduating in Communication Sciences in Turin, she was one of the first PR professionals in the Italian wine industry. 2013 marked a turning point: her passion for painting met the world of wine, giving rise to a unique and innovative artistic technique.
THE UNIQUE "WINE ON PAPER" TECHNIQUE
PurpleRyta paints using pure wine on paper: Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Barolo. Her stain technique is distinctive: she pours the wine onto the paper, lets it express itself naturally, and completes the work with the brush, following the stain's promptings. Like bottled wine, her paintings evolve over time: young wines like Barbera and Dolcetto continue to change on paper, while aged wines stabilize in more orangey hues.
THE STYLE
Among her most iconic works are the " Donne Spettinate " (Women Without Hair)—portraits of free-spirited women, more interested in living life to the fullest than gazing at themselves in the mirror. A multisensory art that engages sight, smell, taste, and touch, celebrating the culture of wine and the land.
A seemingly irreverent gesture, pouring wine on paper, becomes a cultural provocation, inviting reflection on the profound value of winemaking tradition.
