Trentino Alto Adige has its own individual history. Although formally it is a unique region, from the point of view of the traditions, its realities are well differentiated. It is enough to say that, historically, Alto Adige until a few decades ago was a land in which the production of red wines predominated, with Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Nero grapes, as well as Merlot and Cabernet: this happened because it was one of the few areas of the Austro-Hungarian Empire able to produce red wines and could be regarded as the South of a very cold country. Today the situation has changed and Trentino Alto Adige has become the most important region for aromatic white wines in Italy. Starting from the north we find the Isarco Valley and the Venosta Valley - that currently produce the best Riesling and Sylvaner in the country - Merano, Santa Maddalena and Terlano. This is the homeland of Pinot Bianco, Lagrein, as well as of Schiava, and of the international Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon and Merlot. Down to the valley we find the lake Caldaro, Tramin and the best Pinot Nero from the Italian hill of Mazzon, considered the best cru of this grape variety.
The province of Trento is rather famous for the homonymous sparkling wine vinified using the classical method, based on Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, while in the Adige valley we find excellent Bordeaux blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as grapes traditionally cultivated like Nosiola, Marzemino and Teroldego.
