Cantina Novelli

The company has chosen to rediscover the native vineyards of Umbria: Trebbiano Spoletino, a vine variety cultivated in the ancient Spoleto Duchy and Montefalco Sagrantino, and wanted to plant vineyards deploying them exactly in the areas where these vine varieties have centuries–old traditions. The vineyards for the production of red wines are located, therefore, in Montefalco (30 hectares), but vineyards destined to the production of white wines are located in Spoleto (26 hectares).

Cantina Novelli focuses on the territory as a whole, bringing forward project of research like the one of recovery of the ancient vine: Trebbiano Spoletino.

Falesco

The “Falesco” Wine Company was founded in 1979 in Montefiascone by the brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, both oenologists and deeply rooted in this land between Lazio and Umbria.

One of the main objectives was to work to recover the ancient vineyards of the area. The territory, in effect, had enjoyed over the past centuries a fame thanks to the production of extraordinary wines, exclusive of the papal dining halls and of the ancient nobility, but for many decades in a worrying state of neglect. Then, long years of research and selections began, with the aim of finding out ancient clones, now considered extinguished, and flimsy but of high aromatic and organoleptic value micro–varieties that, in the specialized vineyards of the 60s, were almost disappeared. Near this operation of recovery, they tried to identify the vinegrowing areas where the exposure and the peculiarity of the soil could guarantee wines of very high quality. Here the most ancient and rare local white grape varieties survived, among which Roscetto that, as research on DNA carried out by prof. Attilio Scienza proves, derives from the family of the Greco grapes.

At the same time, a modern winery was built, where the use of modern technologies for the fermentation could enhance the aroma and taste heritage of local grapes.

10 years after, in 1989, the production of EST! EST!! EST!!! Poggio dei Gelsi began, which succeeded, in a few years, to give back prestige to a territory and a wine that had been unjustly forgotten.

Starting from the 1998 winery, then, after many years of experience and research on the fascinating Roscetto variety, we have produced Ferentano, a wine that expresses in the best way the potential and the richness of this grapes. To follow, a particular clone of Merlot.

Montiano, produced in the 1993 vintage, from the beginning had been acclaimed as one of the greatest and most innovative Italian red wines, distinguishing themselves for their outstanding elegance, for their precious aromatic value and for their great concentration and structure. Montiano has showed one more time the vocation to quality of our lands. The goal was to find out which grape was able to express it in the best way.

With the 2001 vintage, then, we considered important to give value to another vine, historically linked to the area surrounding Lake Bolsena. From Azienda Agricola Pomele, in effect, Aleatico grapes come, from which we obtain a wine, Pomele, that stands out for the aromatic notes typical of this variety, for its freshness and pleasantness.

In recent times, Falesco has enriched its estate purchasing the Marciliano farm, of more or less 260 hectares, located on the wonderful hill south of Orvieto, in the municipalities of Montecchio and Baschi. From these vineyards Merlot, Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes come, for the production of Vitiano and Merlot dell’Umbria, as well as Vermentino and Verdicchio for Vitiano Bianco.

From the best vineyard of the company, wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon clusters are grown, for the making of a wine that owes its name to the same company: Marciliano, that expresses fully the character of these grapes cultived in these lands. In the same area we planted, in collaboration with the University of Tuscia of Vitero, an experimental vineyard with more than 32 different varieties. They range from Nero D’Avola to Primitivo, from Malbech to Tannat, from Carmenere to Montepulciano, to Teroldego. We deeply believe in this Territory and we want to check the potential adaptability of other varieties to the special conditions of soil and climate of the Marciliano area.

We know that living and working in Palazzone is a privilege, and this feeling becomes a certainty when things get tough. We respect the tradition of Orvieto in the composition of the blend letting Grechetto, more immediate and fragrant, and Procanico, more serious and mineral, assert their personality. We love the idea that the profile of a white wine of central Italy can be created: graceful but incisive, Mediterranean and at the same time with a closed structure. We are proud to make a white wine at an encouraging price, we want to invite people to enjoy a reliable wine that “feels” the difference among the different vintages.

Our conception of wine is intimately linked to the vineyard: only from here the real satisfactions can come out, those that remain. The grapes of Orvieto have not the solar expressiveness of some of the “easy” grapes, and their margins of improvement are not so immediate. Therefore, for the work in the vineyard we rely on continuity, more than on miraculous choices.

Tenuta Decugnano Dei Barbi

The Decugnano dei Barbi agricultural company, one of the most renowned wine producers of Umbria, stands on a hill overlooking the cliff of Orvieto, in the heart of the ancient Orvieto Classico production area. The special and privileged position of the company determines the ideal conditions for a quality production.
The climate, microclimate and sun exposure are particularly suitable for the cultivation of vineyards, as well as the soil of marine origin, of marl and clay, rich in fossils of oysters and shells of the Pliocene age. An ideal ventilation of the vineyards completes, in the end, the uniqueness of this situation.

Villa Mongalli

Within the estate of Villa Mongalli a vineyard of 15 hectares has been planted, whose prized grapes produce wines of the highest quality, both for the rare and peculiar characteristics of the clay soil with a compact structure, therefore light, warm and permeable (an optimal terroir for vines), and for its good exposure, and for the passion and commitment lavished by the family, assisted by experts of national reputation, in the production of Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco. The vineyard, located at an average altitude of about 370 meters above sea level, is cultivated with the objective to get the grapes perfectly healthy and capable of producing great wines linked to the territory of Montefalco.

The individual varieties of grapes are vinified separately and, moreover, selective processes are conducted according to ripeness, to the exposure and to the nature of the terrain. The collection is normally done with a careful selection of the grapes and fermentation is carried out using modern technology, exclusively in a natural way, ie without the addition of selected yeasts. Our aim was, from the outset, to produce wines with a strong personality that did not exclude a reinterpretation of a native vine like Sagrantino.
