Wine production in the Piceno area has achieved in recent years important numbers and results, especially related to the recognition of wines from local grape varieties: for this reason some business realities have thought of giving life to a body that would have the goal of defending this commitment. From this decision, in 2002, the Piceno Wines Consortium was created.
Currently, it is made up of 38 ordinary members: entrepreneurs are directly involved, for the activities that they implement, in one or more stages of production of the DOC protected by the Consortium. Thus, they deal with viticulture, vinification and bottling, engaging in their work, both to comply with the specification sanctioned with the DOC, as well as to share and take on the aims of the Consortium.
It is a satellite activity with significant numbers, given the young age of this initiative: a total of 120,000 hectoliters of DOC wines (2010/2011 data).
The Piceno Wines Consortium finds its essence in the mission that aims to accomplish, both in Italy and abroad: to protect, promote and enhance the local DOC, checking that they are produced in compliance with the specification. But most of all, it assumes the task to raise awareness and inform consumers: there is not future for a production of quality without a conscious consumer.
