The best wineries in Liguria.
The path of this talented winemaker arises in the Cinque Terre, where now a large part of his production is located, to arrive in 2003 to a project called Prima Terra. The harmony of his wines comes from many small elements, apparently disintegrated, that only he manages skillfully to mold as a good orchestra conductor. Even the name imposed to wines follows the originality of Walter.
Cooperativa Agricoltori in the valley of Levanto, which currently has 130 members, obtained in August 1995 the recognition of the DOC for its Colline di Levanto wine. The white wine, called Lievantu, has a delicate, persistent scent, with a slightly bitter aftertaste typical of the wines of eastern Liguria, while the red wine, called Canuet, is characterized by a dry, delicate and harmonious flavor.
The productions of Cooperativa Agricoltori in the valley of Levanto, although limited in quantity, are the result of wise cultivation techniques and of a modern winemaking that includes the Colline di Levanto DOC among the fine wines from an area with ancient winemaking tradition, like the province of La Spezia.
Cascina Prai produces the most famous white wines of Liguria, Pigato and Vermentino, but also reuses of some ancient local varieties, that are not very known, such as Lumassina and Barbarossa (natural pink).
The red wines are based on Granaccia and Rossese, but in the area of Cervo other red grape varieties, well adapted to the Mediterranean climate, are in production.
Of the 12 hectares owned, 8 are employed as vineyard by the youngest of Cervo, recently entered in production, and by the eldest Colla Micheri dating back to the 70s/80s.
Despite not being a certified organic farm, its cultivation and winemaking protocols refer to the very restrictive parameters of natural production, and some of its wines are produced through natural fermentation with native yeasts, while for the others selected basic and strictly non–GMO yeasts are used.
The Capellini have been vinegrowers in Volastra, in the heart of the Cinque Terre, for at least seven generations. The Company currently is run by Luciano in collaboration with his wife Pina and his son Mirco, without forgetting the valuable contribution of his mother Giulia Mergotti, who has been recently awarded a prestigious recognition for the commitment of a lifetime dedicated to the preservation of the territory. The orientation of production presents, for the time being, a small range consisting of three reputable wines.
Azienda Agricola SCORZA CESARE was founded thanks to the enthusiasm of the young owner, whose family has always worked in the field of viticulture.
In the highly suited areas of its vineyards, it produces only for its winery, both for the protection of the genuineness of the product and to protect the environment.
The grapes are vinified, in the traditional way, in the modern winery located in Manarola in the Cinque Terre area, under the watchful direction of the oenologist Giorgio Baccigalupi, whose ability are known and appreciated by all operators in the sector.
In the heart of the Cinque Terre, set in a beautiful natural amphitheater protected from the winds, the Buranco estate shows all its simple, but precious, charm to those who reach it by climbing from Monterosso.
Here, Rio Buranco, which gives its name to the property, before flowing into in the intense blue of the sea, goes through a valley that looks really as an anthology of what most characteristic this part of Liguria can offer.
An exceptionally unique environment, three and a half hectares of land cultivated with vineyards, olive groves and lemon trees by the Grillo family, with love and devotion; a choice of excellence in the Cinque Terre, declared by UNESCO "World Heritage Site".
Wine, brandy, oil, lemons and honey are the productions of Buranco. Small volumes for a high quality. All created in the same way. And by the same philosophy: finding a lost time and trying to make it ours again.
And, to fully understand the exceptionality of the place and its products it is really important to know the environmental treasure to which the Buranco gem belongs: the Cinque Terre; a myth that has always been associated with another myth: Sciacchetrà. A wine that comes from a unique viticultural landscape; in "villages" overlooking the sea, on tiny "bands" taken from the mountain with persistent fatigue; where, to speak like the great Veronelli, "crazy angels winemakers" move like acrobats.
In recent years, Francesca with her husband Roberto and Annamaria have chosen to continue the beautiful work of father Riccardo, affectionately called "u Baccan" ("the leader", in the local dialect). A life choice dictated by strong deep attachment to our territory as a unique environment to preserve and enhance, a silent creator, together with our dedicated and passionate work with the wines of Azienda Agricola Bruna. The philosophy that we apply in the cellar is very simple: in winemaking we pander with pragmatism and sensitivity to the expression of each cultivar and the land it comes from. We prefer natural methods, wines of strong typicality and elegance, without forcing. Maceration on the skins, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, long periods of permanence of wines on the noble lees, have always been our modus operandi on Pigato. At the historic wine cellar dating back to the first twentieth century, in the design stage a wider structure was conceived, in harmony with the environment that will allow us to develop in the future our idea of tradition.
The Bisson wines were created in the early days of 1978 when Pierluigi Lugano, master of art and expert sommelier, aware of the opportunities that he sensed to be hidden in the rugged wines of the Ligurian peasants, decided to enhance the grapes of the Riviera del Levante area.
He started to buy small lots of grapes by farmers throughout the area and to make wine in their wine cellar carrying on, with modern techniques of winemaking, a number of experiments to understand how to deal with local grapes.
The excellent results obtained made it possible to revive native Ligurian wines that had now practically disappeared, such as the Bianchetta Genovese and Ciliegiolo and to create new ideas such as Musaico, a red wine with a strong personality.
After a few years spent vinifying the grapes purchased, conscious of the fact that wine is made in the vineyard, he decided to plant vineyards on his own, in order to achieve full control of the process of quality in his wines.
The cultivation in strict limitation of pesticides is the latest challenge that is being carried out, with great conviction, in vineyards to guarantee quality and genuineness.
The biodynamic farming company is a real living organism in which an harmonious interaction among a lively soil, plants and the cosmos produce grapes of excellent quality and inimitable originality of expression, which will give rise to wines of unequivocal typicality. In our vineyards we do not use herbicides, do not distribute fertilizers and do not irrigate even in the most torrid summers. The only products that we use for the defense of the plants are small amounts of sulfur quarry and copper.
The Ramoino family, since the early 60s in Sarola, a charming village in the hinterland of Imperia, has been leading this dynamic entrepreneurial reality. The latest entry in the company of Fabiana, daughter of Domenico Ramoino, historical figure among the producers of the Ligurian Riviera, has opened the way for the third generation of winemakers. Their production philosophy prefers the traditional grapes of the area and the search of the most suited soils for each variety. The selection of wines is marked by wines of exquisite workmanship reaching levels of rare elegance in Pigato Anchisa, in Rossese Til and in the selection called La Grotta Dipinta, whose labels reproduce cave paintings of prehistoric origin discovered in caves in the area.
Founded in the late 70s by Felice Foresti, this winery has quickly become a reliable point of reference for this part of Liguria, where the system of breeding with saplings is still used. Today, the company is followed by his son Marco and focused mainly on the typical grapevine of Val Nervia, Rossese di Dolceacqua, available in three different types based on the evolution and the origin. To meet the needs of the market, the remaining part of production is characterized by Vermentino and Pigato, the two traditional white wines of Riviera Ligure di Ponente.
That of Laura and Antonio is a business that is strongly rooted in the territory as well as firmly anchored in the tradition of their production philosophy. The company’s proposal is still geared exclusively on grapes of the area such as Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese, Ormeasco, Granaccia and Lumassina, and since the late 90s the acquisition of vineyards located in the most privileged positions has begun.
The Lupi Winery today vinifies DOC grapes of Ponente Ligure: the two white wines Pigato and Vermentino and the two red wines Ormeasco and Rossese.
At the end of the 80s the company has made significant investments in the acquisition of 10 hectares of vineyards, the recovery and reactivation of the old social mill of Pieve di Teco and the construction of a new winery in Soldano, in the heart of production of the best Rossese.
Fifteen years after the first DOC of Liguria – Rossese di Dolceacqua – the government has recognized the importance of the wine sector, attributing the DOC to Pigato, Vermentino and Ormeasco.
Well rooted in the winemaking tradition of a difficult but rich land, Lupi has not given up research and experimentation. The meeting, in 1988, with the famous oenologist Donato Lanati, has initiated a successful collaboration, from which Vignamare has been created. Daughter of the same philosophy that has always guided the steps of Lupi is the replacement in 2004 of the bottling chain, together with the choice of a new cap as an alternative to cork; everything to be sure of a product for the consumer with the same quality promises present at the time of bottling.
The Company, recently established, produces DOC wines of Liguria di Ponente: nearly 3.5 hectares of vineyards, including property and rent, are supported by a fully equipped winery: this allows the control of the entire production chain, to say, of vineyards, vinification, packaging, quality, which are the basis of a modern winemaking company.
The location is Pieve di Teco, the most important town of Arroscia Valley, about 25 km from the sea; the vineyards are situated between 400 and 500 meters in height and this makes it difficult to work and manage the farm; the harvest of grapes is manual and vineyard yields are kept deliberately low.
Cascina Nirasca is led by two young winemakers, Maglio Gabriele and Temesio Marco, who after ten years of experience in the sector, have decided to embark on this new adventure with enthusiasm and competence, with passion and love for a difficult to cultivate land, but still capable to give great satisfaction in a world where man and nature walk and grow together ...
