Franciacorta

Franciacorta , land of the precious Franciacorta (the finest of the Italian wines refermented in bottle with the Classic Method) to which it gives its name, is among the most loved Italian areas by wine tourists. Its hills are dotted with villages and castles, abbeys and patrician villas, prestigious cellars: the Strada del Franciacorta (www.franciacorta.net) winds its way through the center of Brescia and reaches the shores of Lake Iseo. One more reason to visit it is the Festival in Cantina , scheduled for the weekends of 11-12 and 18-19 September. The 66 participating wineries welcome guests with original and imaginative events and guided tours with tasting. The kermesse offers engaging events and a rich offer of initiatives dedicated to entertainment and food and wine and cultural insights. There is no better opportunity to get lost among the many places of historical and artistic interest that dot the Strada del Franciacorta, from monasteries to small museums.

On 2-3 and 9-10 October the flavors of Franciacorta between art, food and wine are the protagonists of Benvenuto autumn! , visits and guided tastings to discover the world of Bacchus organized at the Paolo and Carolina Zani House Museum in Cellatica . We go to the discovery of the most beautiful works in the collection that tell the Dionysian myth: from the painting by Giambattista Tiepolo dedicated to the Wedding of Bacchus and Ariadne to the Allegory of the Earth, a valuable canvas by François Boucher that belonged to the French king Louis XV, passing through the Bacchanalia that animate the white porcelain by Massimiliano Soldani Benzi (second half of the 18th century). The garden of the Casa Museo is also populated with sculptures and vases that eternalize the memory of the god of wine. At the end of each guided itinerary, visitors can participate in an exclusive tasting, conducted by an expert AIS sommelier, of different types of Franciacorta accompanied by typical culinary proposals of the area.

Garda: one lake, 3 DOC areas

Vines and olive trees alternate on the Brescia side of Lake Garda, and in the immediate hinterland, where the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori del Garda winds. A sunny and fertile Mediterranean landscape punctuated by ancient villages, imposing castles, characteristic lakeside towns, in which cellars, oil mills, agritourisms, typical trattorias and elegant restaurants are set. It can be discovered by following the car itineraries that can be downloaded from the website www.stradadeivini.it (which wind for example in Valtènesi, among the morainic hills of the southern shore of the lake, in the stretch from Sirmione to Salò, in the Alto Garda Park), or pedaling in relaxation along the path of about thirty km among the Lugana vineyards. These are the production areas of important and appreciated wines with Controlled Designation of Origin.

The heart (and at the top of the denomination) of the DOC Riviera del Garda Classico (which goes from Sirmione to Limone sul Garda) is Valtènesi , a bucolic territory where hospitality is today an art and where the cultivation of the vine boasts ancient origins, which sink even in pre-Roman times. Considered as the last Mediterranean outpost in the heart of northern Europe, between the municipalities of Desenzano in Salò, in the heart of the Garda morainic amphitheater, it is an area characterized by a unique microclimate, influenced by the beneficial effects of the largest Italian lake . Groppello , a great native vine that represents the main enoic heritage of the area, has found its elective homeland: a small heritage of humanity, considering that in the world there are only 400 hectares cultivated precisely in this area. Another pearl of Valtènesi is the precious Chiaretto , one of the most important and appreciated Italian Rosé. A pleasant opportunity to visit the Valtènesi is, at the beginning of October, Profumi di mosto , an event widespread throughout the territory, in which each company offers experiences in the cellar and in the vineyard, from tastings to artistic installations en plein air, to food combinations. wine (info on www.consorziovaltenesi.it).

The enchanting morainic hills that embrace Garda to the south, between Sirmione, Pozzolengo, Desenzano and Lonato, are the land of Lugana DOC , a refined white lake with an illustrious birth, given that its origin has been certified since the eighteenth century, but the winemaking tradition of these lands dates back at least to the Romans. Produced from a particular local variety called "turbiana", which guarantees structure and good longevity, it smells of wild flowers and citrus fruits and is today one of the most successful Italian wines.

The third DOC is San Martino della Battaglia , a dry white obtained exclusively from the white grape variety TUCHÌ or Tocai Friulano, widespread not only in Friuli Venezia Giulia, but also in Veneto and in eastern Lombardy, where this wine is produced. It takes its name from the place (in the municipality of Desenzano) where in 1859 the bloodiest and most decisive battle of the Risorgimento was fought, today marked by the high tower erected to honor the memory of Vittorio Emanuele II and those who fought for the unification of Italy, from the top of which you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the lower Lake Garda (www.sanmartinodellabattaglia.it).

The largest city vineyard in Europe and the Colli dei Longobardi Wine and Flavors Route

Brescia boasts a primacy in the enological field, something rather unusual for a city: the urban vineyard of Pusterla , with its 3.4 hectares, is the largest city vineyard in Europe . It climbs up to the Castle and until 21 October it frames the multicolored land art work "La Plage" by Pascale Marthine Tayou, an internationally renowned Cameroonian artist. The vineyard, from which the wines for the Desiderian nuns of the Monastery of Santa Giulia (now an extraordinary Unesco site) came, is the starting point of the Colli dei Longobardi Wine and Flavors Route , which goes southwards in an area traditionally dedicated to wine production also as a support to the needs of the city, which had been an important Roman center and, subsequently, the seat of a powerful Lombard Duchy. Along the route of the Strada, which in 2021 turned 20, you will touch centers with ancient history (such as Botticino, Castenedolo, Montichiari, Montirone, Capriano del Colle, Poncarale and Flero), wineries, small producers of agri-food excellence, trattorias and restaurants where you can taste the most authentic Brescian cuisine, collections to visit, such as the Marble Museum of Botticino , the Museum of Fashion and Costume and that of Wine and Corkscrew of Villa Mazzucchelli in Ciliverghe di Mazzano . Do not miss the cultural events and food and wine experiences scheduled between October and November within the "Lombard Autumn" project (dates and info on www.stradadelvinocollideilongobardi.it).

Mountain vineyards in Valle Camonica

Fine wines also from the Brescia mountains. In the Camonica Valley (known all over the world for its extraordinary rock carvings, Unesco World Heritage Site) full-bodied and appreciated IGT wines are produced. The Consorzio Vini di Valle Camonica (www.consorziovinivallecamonica.it) proposes itineraries to do by bike or on foot, which combine sport, good wine and mountain cuisine, among ancient paths, terraced vineyards and paths between villages and wineries where you can stop for visits and tastings. A few examples? The "Tra vigne e Vini" route crosses the vineyards and cellars of the Concarena cone, touching the Cerveno House Museum, while the "Tra vigne e ulivi" route winds through the vineyards and olive groves of the municipalities of Piamborno and Darfo Boario Terme, offering the visitor enchanting glimpses of Lake Iseo and Lake Moro, with stops at sites of historical and cultural importance such as the monastic complex Santuario dell'Annunciata di Piamborno.
