From Loiri Porto San Paolo to Sassari and Arzachena, three wineries tell the story of the winemaking identity of contemporary Gallura.

A unique territory in the Italian winemaking landscape, where the sea meets the mountains, granite emerges from the soil, and the wind becomes a fundamental element of grape quality.

This is where Vermentino di Gallura DOCG is born, Sardinia's only DOCG designation, a symbol of a land that over the last twenty years has built an international reputation based on authenticity, territoriality, and a strong landscape identity.

From the hills of Loiri Porto San Paolo to the countryside of Sassari, to the historic vineyards of the Costa Smeralda, Gallura is home to wineries that differ greatly in size and production philosophy, yet are united by one common element: the ability to transform an extraordinary terroir into recognizable and refined wines.

Among these, three realities emerge as representatives of modern Gallura viticulture: Vini Mura

, Tenute Delogu and Cantina delle Vigne di Piero Mancini .

Gallura: Sardinia's most distinctive terroir

Gallura represents one of the most unique wine-growing areas in the Mediterranean.

Here the landscape is characterised by:

  • granite soils of very ancient origin;
  • strong temperature variations;
  • continuous sea ventilation;
  • high brightness;
  • lack of rainfall during ripening.

These elements allow us to obtain wines with great personality, characterised by freshness, flavour and a marked mineral imprint.

The undisputed star remains Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, but the area also produces Cannonau, Moscato di Gallura, Bovale, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, with growing success.

Mura Wines: Authentic Gallura as told by a family

In the town of Azzanidò, in the municipality of Loiri Porto San Paolo, lies one of the most authentic realities of southern Gallura.

The history of Vini Mura began in 1975, when Filippo Mura planted the first vineyards in a valley protected by the Gallura mountains, characterized by a microclimate particularly favorable for viticulture.

A unique terroir between the sea and the mountains

The estate extends over approximately 20 hectares and benefits from constant ventilation generated by the meeting of sea currents and those from the mountainous hinterland. The soil is composed of clay, sand, and crumbling granite, a combination that gives the wines a strong territorial identity.

The company is entirely family-run and follows a production philosophy that today we would define as sustainable, but which for the Mura family simply represents the traditional way of working the land:

  • mainly manual processes;
  • low yields per hectare;
  • use of organic products;
  • recovery of winemaking waste as a natural fertilizer;
  • reduction of sulfur use;
  • use of energy from alternative sources.

The vineyards and the labels

Each company parcel has specific characteristics:

  • Vigna Sienda dedicated to Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG;
  • Vigna Cheremi for Vermentino di Gallura DOCG;
  • Vigna Cortes destined for Cannonau di Sardegna DOC;
  • Vigna Baja dedicated to Bovale;
  • Vigna Prisma for select productions of Vermentino and Cannonau.

Among the most representative labels are:

  • Sienda Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG;
  • Cheremi Vermentino di Gallura DOCG;
  • Cortes Cannonau di Sardegna DOC;
  • Jara Isola dei Nuraghi IGT;
  • Baja IGT Rosso;
  • Prisma Vermentino and Cannonau.

A niche reality with a strong identity

With approximately 18 hectares in total, 8.8 hectares of vineyards, seven registered brands, and a highly artisanal management, Vini Mura represents a model of family winery capable of enhancing the territory through limited, high-quality production.

Piero Mancini: the pioneer of modern Vermentino

Talking about Gallura without mentioning Piero Mancini means telling only part of the story.

Piero Mancini's Vineyard Cellar

It is in fact one of the companies that has contributed most to the international promotion of Vermentino di Gallura.

Located in the heart of Gallura, the company was the first to recognize the qualitative and commercial potential of Vermentino, contributing to its success on Italian and international markets.

Even today it represents one of the historic names of the denomination, associated with wines that elegantly express the mineral, marine and Mediterranean components typical of Gallura soils.

Gallura: one of the most interesting areas to invest in Italian wine.

Today, Gallura is probably one of the most interesting wine-growing areas in Italy from an entrepreneurial perspective.

The reasons are many:

  • constant growth in the reputation of Vermentino di Gallura DOCG;
  • strong international tourist attraction;
  • proximity to the Costa Smeralda;
  • availability of still highly characterised terroirs;
  • growing demand for identity white wines;
  • development of quality wine tourism.

The stories of Vini Mura, Tenute Delogu, and Piero Mancini demonstrate how very different business models can successfully coexist in Gallura: the small family business, the large production facility, and the historic winery that has helped build the reputation of an entire region.

It is precisely this variety, combined with the unique landscape and the strength of Vermentino, that makes Gallura one of the most fascinating and promising places for contemporary Italian wine.

Tenute Delogu: one of Sardinia's most important wineries.

If Vini Mura represents the artisanal soul of Gallura, Tenute Delogu interprets the industrial and entrepreneurial dimension of Sardinian wine.

Located near Sassari, the company owns over 213 hectares of land, including approximately 80 hectares of vineyards spread across four different farms located in the most suitable areas of northern Sardinia.

A wine-growing heritage of great value

The vineyards grow on granite soils of Hercynian origin, between 50 and 500 metres above sea level.

Cultivated varieties include:

  • Vermentino di Gallura DOCG;
  • Vermentino di Sardegna DOC;
  • Moscato di Gallura DOC;
  • Cannonau di Sardegna DOC;
  • Merlot;
  • Cabernet Sauvignon;
  • Pinot;
  • Chardonnay.

A modern and highly technological cellar

The production center extends over 2,400 m2 of covered space and is one of the most advanced facilities in the region.

Among the main features:

  • three winemaking lines;
  • 74 stainless steel tanks;
  • storage capacity of 12,000 hectolitres;
  • 14 autoclaves for sparkling wines;
  • cooperage with barriques and oak barrels;
  • bottling line up to 3 million bottles per year.

Current production stands at between 1.3 and 1.5 million bottles per year, with an estimated turnover of around 5.5 million euros and a strong presence on the domestic market.

Wine Resort and wine tourism

The company has also invested significantly in hospitality, restoring historic buildings intended for:

  • hospitality;
  • tastings;
  • company visits;
  • high-end wine tourism activities.
