It begins in the west and will conclude after 90 days in the highest vineyards of the island, in the northeastern part: thus begins the long harvest of the producers of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia.
It will involve an extraordinary variety of soils, a number of varieties probably unique in Italy, and will involve many industrious, passionate Sicilians, custodians of a thousand-year-old tradition but aware of the contemporary nature of the world of wine.
The picture, or rather, the mosaic of Sicilian wine 2026, will begin to take shape and color before the watchful eyes of all of Sicily. It will, as always, resemble a journey—to stay relevant, an Odyssey—in the sense of a journey always full of surprises and lessons, in the exciting discovery of the characteristics of the wine of the 2026 harvest.
At the end of summer 2025, Sicilian winemakers were no small concern: the lakes were empty, the vineyards longed for water from the sky. Fortunately, autumn and winter were almost miraculous: abundant rains, well-paced and fairly evenly distributed across Sicily, filled the soil with reserves and filled the farmers with hope. By late spring, the lakes were full and nature was bursting with life.
The vines have reached the final stage of ripening in ideal conditions, with active canopies and soils rich in reserves and energy. Summer temperatures have been ideal, with the exception of a single heatwave (so far) lasting less than a week, which the vineyard has weathered well thanks to the overall vintage trend and the available water reserves.
From the point of view of the individual grape varieties, wanting to name just two pairs among the most and least cultivated vines, for the sake of brevity, we would perhaps underline the perfect quality of Nero d'Avola and Lucido, as they are perfectly at ease with this 25/26 climate trend, and Inzolia and Frappato, which seem ready to express themselves with excellent quality.
The Consortium for the Protection of Sicilian DOC Wines has chosen not to adhere—like other wine-growing areas in Italy and beyond—to a prior estimate of quantities: it prefers to do so promptly and precisely at the end of the harvest itself, aware of the changing climate, the difficulty of estimating the yield of a single vineyard, the nervousness of the markets, and out of respect for the work of all farmers.
From a health standpoint, the year is looking extraordinarily favorable, with a dry late spring and early summer. Even the hot week provided a "natural" boost in halting the growth of those insects that, in previous years, had made life difficult for growers. Therefore, the grapes currently have excellent quality potential.
