Sicilian viticulture is undergoing a profound evolution, driven by the awareness that sustainability does not only mean reducing environmental impact, but also building a more responsible cultural, economic and social model. Interpreting and guiding this change is the SOStain Sicilia Foundation , engaged in a series of initiatives that combine innovation and attention to the territory. One of the most emblematic projects of this vision is the new phase of the “100% Sicilia Bottle” , created to reduce the ecological footprint of packaging. Thanks to the collaboration with OI , the glass bottle has been further lightened, going from 410 to 360 grams: a seemingly simple gesture, but one that has a concrete impact in terms of emissions, transport and use of resources. It is an example of how even details can contribute to a more virtuous system. At the same time, the commitment to protecting biodiversity is being strengthened, through the repopulation of the Sicilian Black Bee , a native species at risk, now at the center of a project carried out together with the Italian Beekeepers Federation . SOStain certified companies are becoming active custodians of this precious ally of ecosystems, hosting it in their vineyards, which are thus confirmed as ideal environments not only for growing vines, but also for safeguarding nature. Sustainability also involves the ability to valorize what is often considered waste . This is the spirit of the Ethical Project , developed with Amorim Cork Italia , which transforms used cork stoppers into a resource to be recovered and reintroduced into the production cycle, according to the principles of the circular economy. Similarly, the collaboration with PlasticFree ODV aims to raise awareness among citizens and businesses about the impact of plastic, promoting more conscious behaviors and practices. These initiatives are not isolated pieces, but part of an organic and shared vision, which sees sustainability as a strategic lever for the future. SOStain Sicilia is demonstrating how it is possible to combine quality, respect for the environment and territorial identity, making Sicily a virtuous example of responsible and innovative viticulture. |
SOSTAIN FOUNDATION:
SOStain is the sustainability program for viticulture in Sicily promoted, through the creation of the Foundation of the same name, by the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia and Assovini Sicilia. The 44 companies currently associated, of which 34 are already certified for a total of approximately 6,300 hectares of land and 23.5 million bottles, share and apply good practices during the production process aimed at protecting and enhancing biodiversity and the communities in which they operate: sustainable management and the use of eco-friendly materials in the vineyard, energy efficiency in the cellar, the use of lighter bottles, but not only. Thanks to the obligation set out in the SOStain specification to also comply with the VIVA protocol of the Ministry of the Environment, SOStain companies also measure and monitor their carbon and water footprint and pesticide residues in their wines, then submitting to checks by accredited verification bodies to obtain certification.
