The Valtellina PGI Apple Protection Consortium , with its presence at Marca by BolognaFiere and Fruit Logistica in Berlin, continues the promotional activities of MAME – More Apples More Europe , the three-year European project focused on communication in the Italian and German markets, designed to raise consumer awareness of correct eating habits and the benefits of daily consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Located in the Marca Fresh area, a concept dedicated to fresh and very fresh products and now in its fourth edition this year, the exhibition space of the Valtellina PGI apple at the international Marca by BolognaFiere exhibition, held on 16 and 17 January 2024, allowed buyers and visitors to learn about the PGI varieties - Red Delicious , Golden Delicious and Gala - grown in the area in the province of Sondrio, the nutritional values and organoleptic properties that characterize this mountain fruit.
The three types engaged the 235 fruit growers of the Valtellina PGI Apple Protection Consortium in the 2023 harvest from mid-August to the first ten days of October . Gala , the earliest variety, ripened in mid-August while Red Delicious and Golden Delicious reached maturity in the first and second week of September respectively. The total quantity collected was 90,000 quintals, of which 40,000 quintals of Red Delicious , 30,000 quintals of Golden Delicious and 20,000 quintals of Gala .
“Our product has reached excellent quality standards thanks to the favorable climatic conditions of the last ripening period and at the time of harvesting – declares Nicola Rossatti , director of the Consortium for the Protection of Valtellina PGI Apples –. Up to now we have detected a positive market trend: the quantity of Gala is almost finished and the prices are on average good. At Marca by BolognaFiere , which had over 20,000 entries in the two days it was open, we wanted to spread the uniqueness and sustainability of our crunchy mountain fruit to as wide an audience as possible."
The Valtellina PGI Apple Protection Consortium also took part in Fruit Logistica , the flagship event for the international trade of fresh fruit and vegetables, organized in Berlin from 7 to 9 February 2024. The consortium stand was located in Organic Route , exhibition route dedicated exclusively to certified organic products.

VALTELLINA PGI APPLE PROTECTION CONSORTIUM
The Valtellina PGI Apple Protection Consortium aims to protect, promote and enhance the varieties grown in Valtellina. It carries out consumer information and production supervision activities. Furthermore, it safeguards the product from abuse, acts of unfair competition, counterfeiting and improper use of the name. The Consortium directly controls all steps of the supply chain, from the field to shipping, guaranteeing the traceability, quality and healthiness of a unique product that has all the characteristics of high quality typical of a mountain apple.
