World Bee Day is celebrated tomorrow 20 May. Castello di Meleto celebrates it with an initiative to rebalance the environment.

A few days ago spring arrived, the perfect time to rediscover a matriarchal society, that of bees , very important for the environmental balance and for our health. Just bees place themselves at the center of this new housing project In the name of the Ape di Castello di Meleto and Viticola Toscana , with the aim of tripling the existence of these insects in the area in the next period. By inviting private individuals and their members to adopt a hive, the company aims to encourage a wider return of this precious insect in the territory of Gaiole in Chianti and surrounding areas.

The protection of the place is one of the peculiar aspects on which the company bases its work, always trying to move a little beyond what are the company aspirations related to the processing of the material, for a return to disused methods and practices , of maintenance according to a thought that intends to protect man and the landscape. For this reason, he launched the special project Nel nome dell'Ape , a title borrowed from Emily Dickinson.

In a delicate moment as it is today, in which the risk factors are manifold and the health of all is endangered, especially that of those who do not have sufficient defenses to overcome important hardships, the project In the name of the Bee captures the desire to facilitate the increase in pollinating bees , which have a positive impact on human immune defenses . The opportunity to entrust a beehive in time wants to promote a current message in a precise direction: on the one hand, to return to the good rebalancing practices necessary also for the environmental education of each; on the other, cultivating awareness in citizenship and building a future of conservation. For those who decide to become keeper of an apiary, it will allow it to grow and develop; in this way he will take care of it remotely and will be involved in the growth step by step.

On each hive taken in custody with a donation of 350 euros, the name of the investor will be affixed and, from the production of 10-15 kg per year of each site, 5 kg will be extracted for 5 years of foster care.

The 20 hives of the property in fact provide quality organic honey and it is in the intentions to triple the families , in order to support the biodiversity of the territory and a global heritage with eco-sustainable development.

The initiative is part of a scenario of renewed attention. After a decade spent checking the residues of a harmful environmental impact on a global level, with aftermath that came from the fifties of the twentieth century - as revealed by an article published in Sole24Ore in 2013 - since 2018 the European Union has decreed the stop all use of neonicotinoid pesticides, which were decimating the apiculture heritage of the member countries. Still from 2018, on May 20, World Bee Day was proclaimed, in order to restore a habitat suitable for the life of these insects.

For some years the attention paid to apis mellifera and apis cerana - which can be bred by man - has allowed to re-evaluate also in Italy the production of honey of various quality and other products such as pollen, propolis and royal jelly very common in use. Not only that: according to a recent intervention by the Conapi National Beekeepers Consortium " bees will save the world " since pollination is closely linked to the production of fruit and vegetables, and 70 plant species out of 100 depend on the fundamental action of bees.
