The Consorzio Vini Alto Adige has drawn up the balance of the 2020 harvest, which proved to be satisfactory in the results achieved, despite the weather conditions have given the South Tyrolean winemakers a hard time.

But despite everything, the harvest was positive: in the cellar a year of good quality is emerging for white wines, among which the excellent results achieved by Chardonnay and Pinot grigio stand out. Among the reds, Pinot Noir and Lagrein achieved excellent quality, with Merlot and Cabernet still at good levels, despite the precarious weather conditions requiring an earlier harvest. The Schiava is less full-bodied than in previous years ".
The atmospheric trend in the vineyards
In the wake of what has already happened in recent years, 2020 also required winemakers a lot of work and dedication in the vineyards. The winter months characterized by above average temperatures, with very mild thermal values for the season, were followed by an initially rainy spring, with cold days that at the end of March forced many companies to intervene in a targeted manner against frosts, and unusually hot in the following months of April and May.

The high temperatures accelerated the vegetative growth and favored, in some particularly sunny plants, an unusually early flowering start.
After the copious rains between the end of May and the first half of June, in the following weeks the thermal trend was decidedly more balanced: in July there were hot and typically summer days, culminating in a brief phase of torrid heat.

The 2020 harvest
At the end of the summer, intense rainfall was recorded on several occasions which forced the winemakers to bet on the best time to start the harvest.

Specifically, the 2020 harvest, compared to the average of recent years, has an average sugar content of 1 Degree Babo (unit of measurement that defines the sugar content present in a must), while the total acidity remained at the usual levels.
