These are the estimates of Susini Group StP, a Florence-based firm that is a leader in employment consultancy .
According to a recent study by Susini Group, there will be over 1.1 million seasonal workers that Italian companies will need, also thanks to the favorable climatic conditions which in recent years have lengthened the summer season, and 93% will be concentrated in the period runs from March to October. The most requested professions are: waiter (41%), cook (40%), barman (38%), cleaner (34%), shop assistants (28%), maintenance workers (22%), bricklayers (19%) and agricultural workers (14%). Activities that require great availability on the part of the workers, as they involve working hours on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and even at night or in difficult climatic conditions, and often also a technical professional experience that not everyone has. For the reasons indicated above, not all of the 1.9 million Italian unemployed will be available or eligible to fill the missing job offers. Susini Group StP estimates that around 710 thousand unemployed people will accept seasonal job offers (just over 37.3%) and, if we add to these the further 151 thousand entries that will be authorized by the government for the 2024 flows, almost 239 thousand workers will be missing. The lack of manpower will inevitably cause difficulties for companies at an organizational level which will force the premises to open with reduced working shifts compared to the past, lowering the quality standards of services and consequent negative impact on productivity. There is a risk of a loss of added value of 32 billion euros in the year, equal to 1.4% of the GDP produced in 2023, and damage to the state treasury of almost 1 billion euros in taxes and contributions.
"It is necessary to identify measures that mitigate the mismatch between job supply and demand. First of all - comments Sandro Susini, labor consultant and founder of Susini Group - it is necessary to understand that the market is requiring more and more scientific and technical professional figures , while the majority of our young people attend high school and humanistic schools. Another solution could be to correctly direct their children to study paths in line with the demands of the job market increase the access of non-EU seasonal or fixed-term workers through an expansion of the quotas of the flow decree. Taking into account the temporary nature of the type of seasonal work, it would be appropriate to provide measures that encourage it, such as contribution or tax breaks in favor of the employer. of work that allow a higher net salary to be paid to the worker", concludes Sandro Susini.
