The Regional Competition "Morgantìnon" is for Sicilian extra virgin olive oils: 15 are the other awards for different categories and 14 are the Special Mentions


The Morgantìnon d'Oro 2013 is undoubtedly the most important regional competition for Sicilian extra virgin olive oils. Conceived by Esa-Ente di sviluppo agricolo, whose director Maurizio Cimino, said: "The regional competition Morgantìnon of Sicilian extra virgin olive oils, created in 2010 on the initiative of this body, continues to experience a lot of interest from producers. This is attested by the fact that in 2013 the samples received have always been increasing significantly over the years and come from all provinces of Sicily, with a great variability of names, labels, varieties, territories. This encourages us to continue in the effort to make sure that the competition will become an invaluable reference for all those producers who want to pursue the excellence of their products.

This year 96 samples of Sicilian extra virgin olive oils from all the provinces of Sicily arrived. There are 15 more than in 2012 and 36 more than in 2011. About 40 have participated for the first time confirming the growing interest of Sicilian oil mills for this contest.

At the organisation of the competition the Province of Enna, the Chamber of Commerce of Enna, the Municipality of Aidone, the Department of Agriculture and Food Resources and the Archaeological Park Morgantina-Aidone collaborated. The desk for eastern Sicily of Sprint and the State Institute "Federico II" of Enna offered their precious collaboration, too.

"The Chamber of Commerce of Enna - the Commissioner ad acta of the Cciaa of Enna, Emanuele Nicolosi, said - also this year participated in the organisation of the important event Morgantìnon that rewards the quality of the best olive oil production in Sicily. The olive oil sector is one of the flagships of the economy of Enna, with agricoltural traditions that have their roots in the thousand-year-old history of this area. "

"The regional competition Morgantìnon of Sicilian extra virgin olive oil - director Paola Rubino said - is included into that aim of enhancing local products which has been representing, henceforth for several years, crucial teaching and educational puropse of our Institute. Extra virgin olive oil, fundamental food and flagship of the Mediterranean diet which is Unesco world heritage, must be valued as an instrument of revival, both from the healthy point of view and from the economic-touristic point of view. Education about "food", which starts from the school, must continue in an integrated path of knowledge and healthy utilization, which, involving students, families and other operators, to foster increasingly the spread of Sicilian extra virgin olive oils throughout the country and internationally. "
