It is really difficult to understand the attitude of acrimonious skepticism regarding the bottling of sparkling wine in PET (plastic) bottles, when many different food products, such as milk and derivatives, juices, sauces, oil, spirits and wine, for years they use PET containers and the wine in particular dates back to the early nineties.

The glass wine bottle market throughout Europe is increasingly aimed at bubbles, so wineries are facing significant economic problems, considering the increase in glass costs in the last year (70%) and the increase in costs of transport.

It is therefore clear that the sector industry must think of alternatives, such as PET, which has already been tested and used for years.

SIPA Spa of the Zoppas Industries Group solved the problem, with the creation of a PET bottle for sparkling wine with a 24-month guarantee, which can be used in existing bottling lines.

By analyzing the cost of the bottle from the raw material to the sales shelf, we obtain a concrete difference in favor of PET, which increases considerably if a form of customization is envisaged; if the CO2 parameter is taken into consideration, the gap between glass and PET widens further, again in favor of PET.

In the oenological context, PET bottles have been used for some time in various countries (e.g. USA and Italy) and on particular occasions (public events, consumption on planes, etc.)

SIPA's goal is to offer an opportunity for migration to PET that is capable of maintaining the appeal of glass shapes, maintaining all its advantages and values.

In fact, PET bottles maintain the geometry of glass bottles or can use shapes that are useful for optimizing the bundling/palletization process.

Furthermore, for large formats, they offer ergonomic gripping solutions and highly strategic grips.

In general, the current cases include small/single-dose formats (187, 200ml) and formats up to 1.5, 3.5 litres.

MAIN ADVANTAGES OF THE PET BOTTLE

• you can keep the same design of the glass wine bottle

• has an easier customization process

• produces lower CO2 emissions

• is lighter than glass

• is indestructible and therefore safer

• PET is a constantly evolving material, unlike glass which remains "static"
