ASPARAGUS OF BADOERE IGP: AN EXCELLENCE THAT COMES FROM FAR AND LOOKS BEYOND

  • 30/04/2021

The new focus on Friday of Veneto Agricoltura, dedicated to regional PDOs and PGIs, is dedicated to Asparago di Badoere PGI. Production in 2021, after uncertainties due to the climate, is going very well and is aiming for 1,000 quintals. Interview with Carlo Benozzi president of the Protection Consortium. The in-depth analysis is available on the YouTube channel of the regional agency.

The virtual journey of VenetoAgricolturaChannel (the multimedia channel of the regional agency) between the PDOs and PGIs of Veneto, or the excellence of quality agri-food, stops this week in Badoere (Tv) . Objective: to get to know the only Italian Protected Geographical Indication for which the European Union has attributed its quality logo to both the white and green type of product. Obviously we are talking about the Asparago di Badoere PGI , grown in 15 municipalities in the provinces of Treviso, Padua and Venice and also known across the border for its very high quality (the VA-Channel video is available on: https://www.youtube .com / watch? v = IXWFid8g01U).

As recalled by Carlo Benozzi , president of the Consortium for Protection, "Asparago di Badoere PGI is known for its tender and fibrous-free consistency, and this applies to both types, white and green. After the drought and the late frosts of the beginning April, which caused major problems for the crop, in particular for green asparagus, now production is proceeding at full speed, to the great satisfaction of the producers. We estimate to reach a total production of about 1,000 quintals ".

The origin of asparagus cultivation in this area seems to date back to the Roman conquest of the Venetian lands. Initially known as a medicinal plant and only later as a food, asparagus has come to the present day thanks to the tradition of its cultivation handed down from generation to generation.

Today Veneto is recognized as the land of asparagus: we remember that our region can boast three European denominations (in addition to the Asparago di Badoere PGI, we also find the Asparago di Bassano DOP , the Asparago di Cimadolmo PGI and various other productions minors).

"The cultivation of asparagus in our territory - Benozzi recalls - had a notable impulse immediately after the last world war, coinciding with the transformation of sharecropping and with the abandonment of silkworm farms. a lot has been done since today our product is marketed not only locally but also nationally and abroad (Great Britain, Japan, etc.) ".

The white Asparago di Badore PGI is straight with a very closed apex, with possible pinkish hues after packaging. The flavor is sweet with a slight aroma of ripe ear of corn and a barely perceptible tone of bitterness. The green variety, on the other hand, has a straight shoot but with possible slight deviation of the tip and very tight apex. The apical color is intense and brilliant green with possible purple hues. The taste is sweet and marked, not acidic, not salty or bitter, the aroma is fruity and herbaceous.

The cultivation of asparagus foresees a three-year cycle which is carried out in three phases: production of the seedlings; soil preparation; planting. The latter takes place between February 1st and June 30th.

The focuses made so far by VA-Channel are available on the Veneto Agriculture YouTube channel.
