In 1950, thanks to the interest of the medical officer of those days, Josto Miglior, a person who became a legend in Sardinia, and with the help of other enlightened Jerzu people, the Cooperative Winery of Jerzu was founded. Forty–five members with the best and oldest estates of Jerzu process Cannonau grapes grapes obtaining the namesake wine with its characteristic flavor and aroma, rich in body and color.
Symbol of the industriousness of the people of Jerzi, Cantina Antichi Poderi di Jerzu, represented the point of arrival of a long economic process of a town and the intuition of some pioneers of the local farming business.
The roots of the the Ancient Estates of Jerzu have a thousand-year old story. In effect, te first douments on the art of producing wine of the town go back to the twelfth century.
The arrival of the Spaniards in Sardinia boosted further development of this activity, from that moment onwards, the whole community lived, and strengthen its position of preeminence in the surrounding area with the wine trade.
In this way, a migration started, that drove many families to move to the most important centers in the region to open their wine shops, the so–called Epic of ox–drawn carts, from the means of transport by which wine was transferred from the village of Jerzu to new markets.
The winery is located in Jerzu, a charming village located about 500 meters above sea level along the east coast in the heart of Ogliastra, one of the most evocative areas of Sardinia.
The territory is characterized by green hills, white beaches of very fine sand, coves surrounded by unspoilt nature, valleys and mountains with typical limestone wedges and ancient woods which surround the Nuraghe, the Tombs of the Giants and the Domus de Janas, indelible evidences of a thousand–year old civilization. The mountain also offers a lush landscape made of Mediterranean flora and fauna.
