The family agricultural tradition thus becomes a corporate but niche activity, to produce wines of great value, capable of respecting the land of origin and enhancing it through its best fruits. For each label, small quantities are produced: about 3000 bottles. Thus was born the "collection" Gurrieri which becomes the reflection of the agricultural and peasant vocation of Ragusa. The family now works together to produce DOCG and Igt wines of Sicily, grows organically and enhances indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Grillo and an international grape variety, Syrah, well adapted to the soils and the Sicilian climate. Father Vincenzo, Don Vicè, to whom some wines are dedicated, continues his work in the vineyard as a tireless and passionate worker. Mamma Graziella takes care of the administrative part of the company and takes care of the family. Her children dedicate the Classic Method Sparkling Wine from Nero d'Avola and Frappato grapes vinified in white, which takes the name of "Donna Grazia".
Today, the company is run by Gaetana Jacono, representing the sixth generation of winemakers, and is committed to the development of the area and the adoption of environmentally sustainable methods.
With the same love that bound her ancestors to vines and with a strong entrepreneurial sensibility, Gaetana is dedicated to the production of DOCG, DOC and IGT wines of Sicily.
A production that has gained a strong recognition also in the international scene.
The estate of the company covers 100 hectares and much of it, since 2001 to our days, has been replanted with the main wines of the area and international varieties.
Here the soil is characterized by a particular substrate formed by calcareous sandstones interfaced to clay, which allows the vines to give quality grapes strongly linked to the "terroir".
The company, renowned for the cultivation of the most prized grape varieties, is internationally renowned for the enhancement of the two wines of the region: CERASUOLO DI VITTORIA DOCG interpreted in the CLASSIC version and FRAPPATO DI VITTORIA DOC, strongly retrained by Valle dell’Acate that determined its claim as summer fruity red wine for fish dishes and Sushi.
The wines of Valle dell’Acate narrate the history and the natural beauty of the Bidini feud.
A site of archaeological value which, since the discovery of a necropolis, bears witness to the flourishing past lived under the domination of the Greeks.
The unspoiled nature, the rows of grapes that embroider the slopes, the reflections of the clay soil, recreate a real natural paradise in which the old millstone and the "dispensa" silently dominate.
The impressive stone architecture evokes the ancient peasant world, reviving, in an atmosphere where time seems to stand still, the way in which wine was made in the past.
In the large room, the Dal Negro presses rest, which have replaced the old "cianca" used for the pressing of the grapes.
Bright, the large openings that were used to introduce the freshly picked grapes in the tracks of the millstone stand out. Here, once, men, women and children were delighted to crush the grapes to the sound of songs and nursery rhymes.
Perfectly intact are the channels through which the fresh must flowed that, dropping, headed towards the pantry.
Aware of the inestimable value of tradition, Giuseppe and Gaetana Jacono undertook in 2001 a major restoration of the old millstone that restored the building to its former glory.
The historicity and the charm of this building enchant the visitor’s eye and bring the spirit and the memory of the illustrious roots of Sicilian culture.
Azienda Agricola COS was founded in 1980 by Giambattista Cilia, Cirino Strano and Giusto Occhipinti. Three friends who wanted to retrace what had once been the activity of their ancestors. The acronym of their surnames (Cilia/ Occhipinti/Strano) gives rise to the company’s name, still a limited partnership. In 1980 they were the youngest winemakers in Italy.
They received for rent by Giuseppe Cilia, father of Titta, the old family winery and the adjacent alberate Vineyard of over 3 hectares in the historic resort of Bastonaca. On October 5th, they harvested their first vintage that will produce 1,470 bottles.
This marked the beginning of their adventures and the radical restructuring of the region of Cerasuolo di Vittoria.
The three partners completed their studies between 1983 and 1985. Rino, however, decided to devote himself to his field of medicine and sold his shares to his sister, Giuseppina (Pinuccia). The new trio then purchased la Villa Fontane in 1991, the Moltisanti family’s property in the Fontane&ndas;Baucina district, and new vines were planted on the eight hectares.
In 1995, Pinuccia sold her shares to Titta and Giusto. The remaining two friends continued to grow the estate as they acquired new and valuable lands close by.
In their quest to interpret the unique terroir of Vittoria, the estate decided to adopt the principles of biodynamic culture. This would help them find and maintain a harmonious balance with nature, as well as craft wines that are as representative as possible of their time and place.
Fascinated by ancient cellar practices, COS decided to work with amphoras, clay jars that were used by the ancient Greeks. The first shipment came from Spain in September 2000, and thus, Pithos was born and a new COS identity was created. The Pithos cuvée is fermented and aged solely in the amphoras which allow the grapes to express themselves naturally in their evolution towards becoming wine.
Once the restoration of the Fontane building was completed in 2003, the head office was moved and the business resort, the Locanda COS, opened for COS’s friends around the world. The company continued its growth when they purchased the 20 hectares of land adjacent to la Villa Fontane in 2005 that included an extraordinary wine cellar dating back to the nineteenth century.
The two architects began an immediate renovation of the building and new winery. That year also marked the first harvest of Cerasuolo di Vittoria with the DOCG designation (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), the only region permitted to have this designation in Sicily.
2007 was the first vintage bottled in the new cellar. The old oak barrels were replaced by 150 amphoras, one of the largest collections in the world, and they began making Pithos Bianco with the local Grecanico grape.
Today, COS is synonymous with Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Their love of the region and its singular terroir produces some of the finest wines Italy has to offer.
The historic winery’s activity has its roots in a history of sharecropping in a background of stamps and notary seals, about a century and a half ago.
The vineyards, in the center of the Contrada Bastonaca, the heart of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, fall into that territory between Ippari and Dirillo, which since the ancient Greeks and Romans was known as Mesopotamium, place of origin of excellent red wines.
The marketing activity begins much more forward, in 1982, with the launching on national and international markets.
In a time when the Sicilian oenology was at the beginnig, the Avide winery highlighted itself by entrepreneurship, enterprise and technical knowledge established by family tradition.
The project was inspired by the lawyer Giuseppe Demostene, who was assisted by his son Giovanni, a notary, with the help of his son in law Giuseppe Calcaterra and later of his grandson,
the lawyer Giovanni Calcaterra: they, over the years, have been able to add value to a product that has always stood out for its excellence.
The growing awareness of the manufacturing know–how and the experience of an established winemaker, Giovanni Rizzo, have made possible the rise to fame, to obtain prizes and awards at national and international level.
Nowadays, the company is run by the same notary, with the aid of the young agronomist of the family Marco Calcaterra, whose task is to transform, through its professionalism, the company to achieve the best quality results and thanks to the help of the sales manager Michele Di Donato, to go the conquest of new markets, growth horizons.
Vito Catania is the witness of his family’s wine and oil making tradition, developing and increasing the existing heritage of lands and introducing innovative working criteria. The company is the result of a work begun in 1996 with the valuable collaboration of Salvo Foti. Today, it boasts more or less 70 hectares of vineyards in the best territories of Eastern Sicily.
The farm was founded in 2004 by the will of Arianna Occhipinti, a young producer. The lands extend into the heart of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, in the scenario of Hyblaean Mountains in Contrada Fossa di Lupo and Piraino, with its vineyards and olive groves, cultivated with natural methods and with absolute respect for the character of the area. The soils are of very old matrix, where Frappato di Vittoria and Nero d’Avola are original and then better express their scents and hints of the Mediterranean sea.
The olive groves of Tonda Iblea and Nocellara del Belice cultivars, respectively, are located respectively in the hills of Chiaramonte Gulfi, at the foot of the Hyblaean Mountains, and in Castelvetrano, cradle of the oldest oil production in the Belice Valley.
The Valenti company was founded in 2000 thanks to the love and passion for vines and wine of Francesco, passed on to him by an ancient family tradition. The wines produced are of high quality and represent the character of the area where they are produced.
The ArmosA winery is a small production of wines which currently processes about 4.8 ha of vineyard of nero d'avola and 0.1 ha of white muscat. The cultivation techniques used aim to achieve an optimal balance vegetative-productive to promote the production of high quality and healthy grapes. The harvest is done manually in the cooler hours of the day, with the selection in the vineyard and the grapes collected in crates.
