As for the Cerasuolo di Vittoria wine of the current type, we have a definite date of birth, that is 1606, when the city of Vittoria was founded: its founder Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, indeed, in that year gave to the first 75 settlers one hectare of land on condition that they cultivate another hectare as a vineyard.
The winemaking developed later greatly over time, so that the Abbot Paolo Balsamo, in 1808, wrote:
«The countryside of Vittoria, more or less ten thousand "salme" (230,000 hectares), for the most part sandy, of limestone, produces proportionally a little of wheat, barley and beans, a lot of oil, hemp, locust bean, and especially wine which has a much merit and we should, in my opinion, consider it as the best of those for the table all over the Island... made almost only of Grossonero, Calabrese (Nero d’Avola) grape varieties, and incomparably more of Fappato».
A wine that owes its preciousness to the virtues of the grape varieties; the magic of the climate; the diligent cultivation by a few enthusiasts operators.
The Consortium for the Protection of Cerasuolo, has a constant watch on the quality of the product, and a prudent promotional work carried out in favor of this precious wine.
