The Turin Vermouth Consortium announces that it has obtained the Certification Mark from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Important news because the achievement of this objective, obtained thanks to a demanding work carried out by the young Consortium, enhances the international protection of Vermouth di Torino PGI, the most famous flavored wine with Protected Geographical Indication in Italy and the only vermouth in the world to have this recognized status.
The US Certification Mark is not always so easy to obtain – notes President Roberto Bavait took three years of work during which the Consortium operated in close collaboration with the historic producers of Vermouth di Turin, which have made their archives available in order to collect the documents necessary for the preparation of the dossier. These authentic testimonies have made it possible to demonstrate that the Vermouth of Turin has been sold in the United States by the members of the Consortium continuously from 1866 until today and to obtain the precedence rights".
" The Turin Vermouth Consortium is constantly active to protect consumers from misleading labeling practices ” comments Pierstefano Berta, Director of the Consortium.Constantly working with Italian institutions and with the Trademark Offices of other countries to obtain maximum protection for Vermouth of Turin, it became clear that we needed broad protection in the USA, a country that represents a very relevant market for the Consortium members ."
By obtaining this Certification Mark, the Consortium has completed a journey which in recent years has seen the protection of the PGI, of the name of the Vermouth of Turin and of the consortium brands in Italy and in all the countries of the European Union, as well as than in numerous other nations. Registration in the USA is fundamental in the process of global protection and control of the "Vermouth di Torino PGI" denomination: it is an incentive for the Protection Consortium to negotiate with other countries and to strengthen its objective of protecting consumers around the world from possible imitations of a historical and traditional product, the pride of Piedmont, Italy and Europe.

The Vermouth of Turin
Vermouth di Turin is the most famous Italian flavored wine, already appreciated at the royal court of Savoy. Its name derives from the German term wermut which defines Artemisia absinthium (wormwood), the main aromatic base in its preparation. From 1400, Turin's liqueur makers began to distinguish themselves for their expertise in the art of distillation until they achieved, already in the eighteenth century, great fame beyond the Italian borders. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Vermouth also became famous abroad in its two white and red variants. The development of Vermouth di Torino as we know it today, a fascinating convivial aperitif, began precisely in the Piedmontese capital. Over the years we have witnessed the evolution of processing techniques: the new ones have joined the older ones and their coexistence continues today to preserve and enhance the traditional production of this product.
Vermouth di Turin is classified based on its color (White, Amber, Rosé or Red) and the quantity of sugar used in its preparation. The specification also provides for the Vermouth di Torino Superiore type which refers to products with an alcoholic strength of no less than 17% vol., made with at least 50% Piedmontese wines and flavored with herbs - other than absinthe - grown or harvested in Piedmont.
