Trentino, 26 farmers for the prize for the best vineyard in Marzemino

Covid does not stop, once again this year, the original competition conceived in 2001 by the Municipality of Isera, City of Wine of Vallagarina, Trentino, with the far-sighted objective of rewarding the work done in the vineyard throughout the entire production cycle of the grapes, in the awareness of how much the vineyards contribute to the beauty of the territory, to the advantage of both those who live there and those who visit it.

26 farmers competing this year, including 4 women and 5 under 40s , confirming an important return of young people to agriculture. Contending for the title of “ La Vigna Excellent ”, plots of Marzemino , a black grape variety from the Caucasus which in these lands has found an ideal habitat to give life to a great wine, rightfully entered among the Trentino wine excellences.

40 candidate vineyards , for a total of 220 thousand square meters , of the Municipalities of Isera, Nogaredo and Mori , which in the last period have been interested by a first visit by Bruno Matté, technician of the Edmund Mach Foundation - Agricultural Institute of San Michele all'Adige, for a skimming aimed at selecting the ten best based on a general analysis of the vineyard considering position, exposure, planting layout, cultivation method, type of management - organic, integrated, etc. - and inter-row management techniques, evaluating at the same time the correct management of the vineyard, the management of the canopy, the mowing of the grass, the vegetative-productive balance and, lastly, the quantity of grapes.

This phase will be followed by the visit of the entire commission of experts, chaired by Professor Attilio Scienza , Professor of Viticulture at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Milan, and composed of Marco Stefanini , Duilio Porro and Bruno Mattè himself, technicians of the Foundation Edmund Mach - Agricultural Institute of San Michele all'Adige, by the journalist and Grand Master of the Confraternity of Vine and Wine of Trento Enzo Merz , by Carlo Rossi who, in 2001, baptized the competition as Mayor of Isera, and by Franco Nicolodi, regional coordinator of the Italian Wine Cities Association.

The first three winners, who will receive a cash prize, will be announced during the award ceremony scheduled for Sunday 12 September as part of the final day of “La Vigna Excellent. And it is immediately Isera " , an event dedicated to Marzemino and born as a corollary of the competition, organized by the Municipality of Isera with the support of Trentino Marketing, the coordination of the Trentino Wine and Flavors Route as part of the coordination of the provincial wine events called #trentinowinefest , and the collaboration of Apt Rovereto and Vallagarina.

“ Despite the heavy hailstorms that affected the vineyards especially during the month of July and the beginning of August - comments the jury - the great care taken in general management of the vineyards is confirmed. The hope is that in this last month of maturation the weather is favorable: we are very late compared to last year but more in line with the seasonal average. Most likely - they conclude - the harvest of the Marzemino will take place at the end of September ”.

During the meeting, the literary prize named after Francesco Graziola , historical jury member of the competition will also be awarded for the fifth consecutive year.

Marzemino

The Marzemino vine represents one of the most interesting varieties of Trentino viticulture. Arriving in these lands when Venice dominated trade throughout the Adriatic, it is precisely in Vallagarina that, thanks to an ideal environment and a sub-continental climate, has grown to become the great wine of today. Ruby red in color, dark with purple hues, it has aromas and fragrances of wild berries with floral nuances of violet, mixed with slightly spicy and vaguely balsamic notes.
