Barbieri a Bellanova The production chain should not be left alone

In the open letter to Minister Teresa Bellanova, Massimo Barbieri, President of Torrevilla, an association of winemakers in the Oltrepò Pavese for 114 years, speaks out for its 250 members, who work 700 hectares in 9 Lombard municipalities, and for all those companies, wineries and not only that, of the supply chain that feeds the Horeca sector and that makes Made in Italy great in the world.

The government, concludes Barbieri, "must not forget the suffering of those who remain standing".

A call to the attention of the Government so that it does not forget that the effects of the recent decrees , in addition to the realities directly affected, are also the thousands of production companies, their territories and all their families : "The production chain must not be left alone. […] We are aware that important measures must be adopted to deal with this crisis, but the whole wine system cannot lose out - Barbieri writes in the letter. All those companies that, during the first wave, took on the expenses - in the face of an insufficient contribution - supporting themselves with robust shoulders and a desire to do. Companies that will not be able to hold up under these conditions for a whole winter. Companies that will close. Companies that need not more attention, but the attention they deserve ».

Egr. Minister Teresa Bellanova,

I turn to you as an entrepreneur, as President of an Association of Winemakers that has 250 members, as a man of wine, but above all as an Italian, committed with perseverance and determination in the enhancement of his land and of Made in Italy, a hallmark of quality all over the world.

I turn to you, because it is you who represent us, because it is you who can concretely act to stem a worrying situation, destined only to worsen after the provisions contained in the last Dpcm signed by the Government and exposed to the country by the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte .

A series of measures that at first glance affect only restaurants and bars, but which in reality penalize the activity of thousands of companies, their people and all the related activities they generate in the territories in which they operate. An activity that is the beating heart of the Italian system: small, medium and large companies that contribute significantly to our GDP.

An association like ours, Torrevilla in Oltrepò Pavese, which for 114 years has been committed every day to protecting the activity of 250 producers and which, working on over 700 hectares of land in 9 Lombard municipalities, has a significant impact on the economy of the whole territory.

Companies that are now turning to you, Minister Bellanova, because it is right that through you the whole of Italy hears this alarm cry: the production chain must not be left alone. Abandoning it means ignoring how a productive reality with its turnover is able to bring wealth also to the territory in which it operates. Due to the pandemic, Torrevilla's shareholders received lower dividends than expected and this caused them serious economic damage considering that they were already working at the limit of production costs. The consequences, in cascade, have hit and are still affecting the entire territory of the Oltrepò Pavese. And, like us, thousands of companies in Italy are in the same situation. We have already survived a first severe blow, Minister: let us not let another, heavier one risk being the one of grace.

This is why I, a man of wine, turn to you, talking to you about all those companies that will see their bottles sacrificed, closed in the cellars of bars and restaurants or abandoned on supermarket shelves. We are aware that important measures must be taken to deal with this crisis, but the whole wine system cannot lose out.

All those companies that, during the first wave, took on the expenses - in the face of an insufficient contribution - supporting themselves with robust shoulders and a desire to do. Companies that will not be able to hold up under these conditions for a whole winter. Companies that will close. Companies that need not more attention, but the attention they deserve.

Torrevilla is one of these realities of which I am president. It is with the voice of the winegrowers that I represent and with their concern that I appeal to you to give us more space, the space we deserve for the system we represent, in the decisions of the Government. A government that knows how vast is the contribution of realities like ours to the well-being and economy of the territories. A government that cannot fail to know the extent of the choices made, their consequences - the closure of thousands of farms, for example. A government that must not forget the suffering of those who remain standing.

With estimates,

Massimo Barbieri
President of the Torrevilla Producers Association, 250 companies in Oltrepò Pavese
