The winners of the South Tyrolean Wine Culture Award 2023 have been announced. The Unterwirt in Gudon convinced the expert jury in the restaurant category, while the Jimmi Hut above the Gardena Pass won the category of mountain huts . “This year's edition has once again highlighted the extent and with what passion the gastronomy of South Tyrol lives the culture of wine”, commented the President of the Consorzio Vini Alto Adige Andreas Kofler.

This year the prize was awarded in the categories restaurants and mountain huts. “ During the selection process, we attach great importance to the involvement and active participation of our associates ”, explains the President of the Consortium Andreas Kofler, which means that the members of the Consortium can propose the names of the companies which, in a second round , are tested and evaluated by a jury of experts.
UNTERWIRT, GUDON: CONSULTANCY, PROFESSIONALISM, HIGH-LEVEL CELLAR
In the restaurant category, the Unterwirt in Gudon took the podium, where Thomas Haselwanter is in charge of the kitchen while his wife Cornelia takes care of the service and wine advice. Sommelière with over twenty years of experience, Cornelia Haselwanter makes customer assistance her greatest strength. The jury was favorably impressed by the assortment of the wine list; the Unterwirt cellar focuses predominantly on South Tyrolean labels that go perfectly with the traditional and regional cuisine of Thomas Haselwanter.
JIMMI REFUGE: WIDE WINE LIST, COMPETENT SERVICE
The same applies to the Jimmi Hut, located at 2,220 meters above the Gardena Pass. Despite the location and the resulting logistical difficulties, the manager Josef Schrott, his sons and the whole team pay special attention to the wine culture – "with a large and well-structured wine list that gives due space to the wines of the 'South Tyrol and the international pearls', as the jury of experts ruled. The latter was also impressed by the very precise and competent advice on wine pairing.
THE WINE CULTURE AWARD AS AN IMPORTANT SHOWCASE
“The Unterwirt and the Jimmi Hut are worthy recipients of the South Tyrolean Wine Culture Award, not least because both manage to show how deeply rooted the wine culture is in South Tyrol and how different the conditions are under which it can concretely experienced", explains the president of the Kofler Consortium who also expresses his satisfaction for the great participation in the 2023 edition of the Prize for the culture of wine. “It too is a further indication of the great importance attributed to the culture of wine in our province”, emphasizes Kofler. “And, last but not least, how the Wine Culture Award is increasingly becoming an important showcase for the entire sector.”
