The producers of the Consorzio di Tutela del Roero have presented a proposal to the municipalities of the denomination for the abolition of chemical herbicides.

Under the leadership of president Francesco Monchiero , the producers of the Consortium have in recent years taken more and more concrete steps towards the courageous goal, born of the members two years ago in the assembly. With the support of the winemaker Edmondo Bonelli , the Consortium presented a proposal to the mayors and the municipal agricultural commissions to have the prohibition on the use of chemical products for weeding included in the regulations of the Rural Police. This is a first step towards an important result.

«Our goal and our mission as producers is to protect and enhance our wonderful territory - declares Monchiero. - A fundamental part of the richness of the hills we call home is biodiversity; chemical treatments for weeding put at risk the variety of plant and animal species that naturally populate the vineyard environment, depleting it of its ability to self-regulate and damaging the landscape. In this historical moment, in which even the consumer is more attentive to sustainability, we want to take on the responsibility of reducing our environmental impact. I am very proud of the courage that the partners have shown in pursuing a goal that is not simple, but necessary: it is a proof of our love for these lands ».

Founded in 2014, the Consorzio di Tutela Roero aims to protect and promote the Roero Docg Bianco and Rosso through the synergy between the producers and winemakers of the area. Fulcrum of the activities of the Consortium, which today represents 233 members including producers and winegrowers, is the enhancement of the Roero territory and its symbolic wine: that of Roero is a landscape that over time has been transformed and shaped by the presence of vineyards so much be included in the list of Unesco Heritage Cultural Landscapes , in 2014, together with Langhe and Monferrato.
