To mark this anniversary, the report " Organic in Figures 2026 ," prepared by ISMEA for MASAF, was presented. The analysis highlights a 5.4% decline in organic farmland in 2025, primarily due to a decline in areas undergoing conversion (-24.4%), particularly affecting pastures. Areas already certified organic, however, remain essentially stable (-0.5%). The number of operators also decreased slightly, decreasing by 1.8%.
The Report highlights positive trends in consumption, which is expected to grow by 9.2% in both value and volume in 2025. In the first six months of 2026, sales of organic products are expected to increase by 4%, significantly outperforming the conventional agri-food sector.
"The data depict a period of substantial stability in organic production, while consumption continues to grow," emphasizes Maria Grazia Mammuccini, President of FederBio . "The uncertainty of the regulatory framework regarding the future of the CAP certainly has an impact, but there are also clear signals that must push us to decisively address the challenges facing small and medium-sized organic farms. These businesses, like the entire agricultural sector, are penalized by worsening geopolitical conflicts and the climate crisis, with significant impacts on production costs, while on the market, even in the organic sector, prices paid to producers have fallen in many cases. Although organic farming has greater resilience, it is still affected by the growing criticalities that are severely testing the entire agricultural sector. Added to this pressure is the significant burden of bureaucratic and administrative requirements and certification costs, which are becoming unsustainable for small and medium-sized farms. It is therefore urgent to update and strengthen support policies for small and medium-sized organic businesses, offering farmers tools and Concrete solutions, starting with simplification and the promotion of organic supply chains at the "fair price." Especially at a time when demand for organic products continues to grow, if domestic production were to decline, the real risk is that a growing share of this demand will be met by imports. Following the approval of the organic law and the implementation of the National Action Plan, in a positive relationship and ongoing dialogue with the Ministry, it is now necessary to implement the essential policy innovations to strengthen organic production. This is a crucial step towards the drafting of the new National Action Plan for organic products and the reform of the CAP 2028-2034, the negotiations for which at the European level are scheduled to conclude on December 31st.
On the occasion of European Organic Day, the Italian Organic Label was also officially presented, identifying products made exclusively with 100% Italian raw materials. Operators can already submit an application to the Ministry of Agriculture to use the Label.
Established by Law No. 23/2022, this free and voluntary logo represents, for FederBio, an important recognition tool that strengthens transparency towards citizens and supports the positioning of Made in Italy organic products on the national and international markets.
"The time has come to decide which agricultural model we want to support in the coming years ," continues Maria Grazia Mammuccini , President of FederBio . "Organic farming demonstrates that it is possible to produce food while protecting the health of the soil and citizens, strengthening agriculture's ability to mitigate climate impacts. European Organic Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the value of the agroecological transition and the role of a sector that contributes to creating new prospects for young people and women and strengthening inland areas. The Italian Organic Brand will help support our farmers and Made in Italy organic supply chains founded on transparency, quality, and fair prices."
