At the 29th Assoenologi Sicilia Enosimposium, the Consortium for the protection of DOC Sicilia wines presents the status of the VISTA Lucido project and the other consortium projects.

The work of the annual Assoenologi Sicilia event has recently concluded, once again held this year at the Pollina Resort, with great participation of sector professionals, companies and institutions. To frame this year's insights, the figure of the oenologist, evolving today more than ever, to respond to the research needs dictated by the challenges of climate change and the demands of a market that is not always easy to understand.

“The collaboration of Assoenologi Sicilia with the Consortium for the protection of DOC Sicilia wines is very strong and is based on the common objective of improving recognition in the world of the wine-growing heritage of the Region”: in the words of Giacomo Manzo, President of the Sicily section Association , the aim emerges of giving space, in the Association's event, to the research projects of the Consortium for the protection of DOC Sicilia wines.

The President of the Consortium Antonio Rallo confirms the spirit of the collaboration: “We are working hard together with Assoenologi on the winemaking front, and today we have the opportunity to share with the world of production the results of the work carried out so far within the scope of the VISTA Lucido project : the potential of the Lucido vine is truly very high and the experiments carried out so far are confirming this".

The Consortium carries out activities of protection, supervision, valorisation and promotion of this impressive heritage. The VISTA project - Innovative and Sustainable Enhancement of the Terroirs of Native Varieties also involves the IRVO - Regional Institute of Wine and Oil, alongside the Consortium and entrepreneurial partners. Antonio Sparacio, Director of the Research and Experimentation Unit , underlines to our microphones the aims of the project, in which IRVO intervenes as scientific manager: "The philosophy of the project is the innovative and sustainable valorization of the terroirs of the native varieties, and specifically of the Polished. The activities take place both in the field, to deal with the effects of

climate change, both in the cellar, to enhance the taste and aromatic profile of the polish; the protocols applied during the trials will now be transmitted to companies who will apply them to larger productions, to broaden the scope of the research".

The Sicilian vineyard , continues President Rallo, has the characteristics of a wine continent: its extension is three times larger than that of New Zealand , equal to the vineyard of South Africa and the vineyard of Germany. Sicily is the first region in Italy in terms of biological surface area and the pedoclimatic conditions of this vast extension make it particularly suitable for sustainable production: quoting the words of Antonio Rallo , Sicily is "sustainable by nature".

Within this continent, the DOC Sicilia, born in 2011, is the expression of 7,202 winemakers and 530 bottlers, measuring an extension of 22,528 hectares and a production of 85,584,579 bottles.

The VISTA Lucido Project

President Antonio Rallo goes on to illustrate the actions in which the VISTA Lucido project is divided, ranging from Vineyard Management to Oenological Management , from the adoption of the SOStain portal for measuring the sustainability requirements of the project, to Rebranding and communication to main stakeholders.

The day of work was also an opportunity to collect the observations of the Vice President Giuseppe Bursi , who underlined how, in a positive moment for the whites, demonstrated by the numbers of the Grillo, which in the last year has seen an increase of 15% packaged products, it is important to do everything possible to include the "Catarratto-Lucido", which represents 1/3 of the Sicilian vineyard, in this trend: giving new impetus to this significant portion of regional production means intervening to support the entire wine production of the region , also supporting the entire cooperation sector. The analysis effort carried out by the Consortium on the production areas and on the technical solutions for the valorisation of the Polished can give a significant boost to the entire regional wine sector".

In the words of Vice President Filippo Paladino , “the objective of defining the most suitable areas for the production of Lucido allows us to meet consumer preferences; beyond the differences between different areas, today's tastings demonstrate that the vine has strong identifying characteristics, which are confirmed by all the experiments carried out".

Giuseppe Figlioli, oenologist and member of the Consortium's board of directors , underlines the great versatility of Lucido, which is proving capable of interpreting still wines, even from evolution, charmat sparkling wines, with some good expressions with the classic method. “In the first year of research we applied the same protocol to different wines, in order to highlight the differences between the different areas and confirm the great versatility of the vine. The objective of the project is to promote a style of wine that can give Sicilian wine "sight" throughout the world."
